Entry Requirements

Completion of the school based S3 Computing Science course is preferable.

Course Content

This introductory qualification is designed to teach you how to code and develop computer games.

It is available at three levels: SCQF level 4 (National 4), SCQF level 5 (National 5), SCQF Level 6 (Higher)

The course has three areas of study:

Computer Games: Design

Learners will acquire an understanding of the underlying concepts and principles involved in digital gaming planning and design. Learners will recognise and distinguish differences between numerous gaming platforms, environments and genres. Learners will be introduced to methods used in the planning and design stages involved in the production of a digital game. Learners will plan and design a level in a digital game.

Computer Games: Media Assets

Learners will acquire an understanding of the different types of media assets required for developing a digital game such as sound, graphics and animation. Learners will plan and produce media assets for use in a game development environment.

Computer Games: Development

Learners will gain an understanding of the processes involved in the final stages of development of a digital game. Learners will use their chosen game development environment to bring together all the parts and produce a working game. Learners will gain an understanding of the testing and evaluation process.

During the award, learners will gain a variety of knowledge and skills including the following.

What media assets are available and how to capture them?

What makes a good game?

How to modify media assets for your game?

How to program a computer game? Coding is essential to produce a working game independently.

How to design a good game?

How to test a game?

Assessment:

  • Learners will be expected to create a portfolio of the learner’s work which should be constructed over the period of the Unit, with the learner contributing material to the portfolio on an on-going basis. In order to achieve the award the learner must pass all three units.
