History: Advanced Higher
Entry Requirements:
- A or B in Higher History (a pass in other subjects like Higher Modern Studies and Higher English can also be considered)
- Good literacy skills are also an advantage for the study of history.
Course Content:
Pupils will study one of the following topics for the year:
- Northern Britain: from the Roman incursions into Scotland up to the Viking invasions of Scotland. 1AD to 1034 AD.
- Germany; 1918 to 1945.
- Russia; from Tsarism to Stalinism, 1900 to 1945.
There is also an assignment, which is in the form of a 4,000 word dissertation and candidates can choose a topic of interest related to the course research and then produce an essay style write up for dissertation. This is excellent preparation for the relevant skills required for university courses.
Assessment:
- Internal: Weekly tests based on the exam questions (results will generate a working grade for tracking purposes)
- External:
SQA Examination: 90 marks
Exam Paper – two essays (25 marks each) and three source-based questions (40 marks in total). The total for exam paper is 90 marks.
Assignment: Is a 4,000 word dissertation and is assessed externally by the SQA). It is worth 50 marks.
Progression Pathway:
- University – MA in History. LLb in Law.
