Level 5 NPA Criminology

 

 

 

 

 

Entry Requirements: 

  • S3 Climate, Energy, Life today and Tourism or any other S3 Social Subject. 
  • Any N4 Social Subjects or N4 English

 

Course Content: 

This course will introduce learners to the field of criminology, including its history and the role of the media in reporting crime. Learners will also explore different social issues in the UK, as many of these directly link to crime.  

The course will interest learners if they want to develop their knowledge of understanding criminal behaviour and crime. They may be interested in a career in police, law, social work, probation service, legal services or community work. 

Please note, the nature of criminology is challenging and includes sensitive topics such as domestic violence and sexual abuse. Learners must consider the suitability of this course for them.   

 

Assessment: 

Internal: Over the year learners will complete work which makes a portfolio of evidence. This will include a range of different assessments, for example written tests, posters, group work and presentations. 

External: There is no exam in Criminology. Pupils will be awarded a pass or fail based on the portfolio they create t hroughout the year. 

 

Progression Pathway: 

  • Pupils who take Level 5 Criminology can move directly into Higher Modern Studies in S5/6.  
  • Criminology also has transferable skills to the other Social Subjects such as Modern Studies, Geography, History and RMPS. At college, the course creates a good foundation to progress into Social Studies, Psychology and Sociology. 
  • Criminology is an excellent foundation for careers in the police, law, social work, probation service, legal services or community work.
