Applications of Mathematics: N4/N5
Recommended Entry Requirements:
- This course is ideal for candidates who have achieved a pass at N4 but struggle with more mathematical topics like Algebra and Trigonometry.
- Pupils in S4 will be advised if this is a more suitable progression pathway during the session.
Course Content:
The purpose of the National 5 Applications of Mathematics course is to motivate and challenge candidates by enabling them to think through real-life situations involving mathematics and to form a plan of action based on logic.
The mathematical skills within this course are underpinned by numeracy, and designed to develop candidates’ mathematical reasoning skills in areas relevant to learning, life and work.

- Numeracy Skills
- Financial Skills
- Statistical Skills
- Geometric Skills
- Measurement Skills
- Graphical Data & Probability Skills
Assessment:
- National 4 courses are internally assessed within school.
- Candidates must complete the three unit assessments for the course and an ‘Added value unit’ which assesses material covered from across the entire course.
- National 5 courses are 100% externally assessed by formal exam.
- Candidates must complete two external examinations set by the SQA.
- Paper 1 – Non calculator
- Paper 2 – Calculator
