Spanish: National 4/5

Recommended Entry Requirements:

  • Pupils working within level 4 at the end of the Broad General Education can choose to study either one or two languages in S4 .

Course Content:

  • In both National 4 and National 5 you will continue to develop and work on the skills of Talking, Reading, Listening and Writing. You will learn French through a variety of activities such as ICT games and activities, videos, role plays and conversations as well as written texts.
  • The courses focus on the topic areas of society, learning, employability and culture and the learning is linked to the pupils’ own interests in real life situations in order to encourage purposeful conversation, personal involvement and genuine exchanges of information. Pupils are encouraged to communicate about things which interest them.

The following provides details of skills, knowledge and understanding sampled in the National 5 course assessment.

  • Reading and Writing; Listening

Candidates will be assessed on all four contexts: society, learning, employability, and culture.

  • Assignment – writing

Candidates will be assessed on one of three contexts: society, learning or culture.

  • Performance – talking

Candidates will be assessed on at least two of these four contexts: society, learning, employability, and culture.

Assessment:

  • National 4 is internally assessed and pupils will be awarded a pass or fail based upon their performance throughout the year and their completion of internally assessed units.
  • National 5 is assessed via a combination of an internal talking assessment and an externally assessed exam and writing assignment.

Progression Pathway:

  • National 4 Pass allows pupils to study National 5 Spanish
  • National 5 A/B/C* allows pupils to study Higher Spanish
  • National 5 C* – Subject to consideration of personal circumstances, including a view of faculty staff, alternative progression routes and the individual’s learner journey
