Music: Advanced Higher

Course Content:

Throughout this course, pupils develop a breadth of knowledge and understanding of music concepts and musical literacy. They learn to recognise and distinguish level-specific music concepts, signs and symbols as they perform, create and listen to music.
The course allows candidates to develop and consolidate practical skills in music and knowledge and understanding of music styles and concepts. It encourages them to self-reflect and explore their creative ideas.
Understanding music through listening enables pupils to build on and extend their knowledge and understanding of music and influences on music.

Assessment:

You will be assessed through a performance (60 marks), a listening paper (40 marks) and an assignment (20 marks).
In your performance you will be assessed on two instruments. The duration of the performance is 18 minutes. Performances will be assessed by a visiting SQA examiner.
In the listening paper you will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of musical concepts by identifying important features within recordings.
Your assignment will consist of a composition, a review and an analysis of a piece of music.
