Entry Requirements:
- Recommended (but not essential) S1-3 Modern Studies
- Good literacy skills
- N4: Achieving level 3 in S3.
- N5: Achieving level 4 in S3.
Course Content:
Pupils study 3 units:
- Unit 1 : Democracy in the UK: How the government works and how laws are made in the UK.
- Unit 2: Social issues in the UK: This unit focuses on the social issues of crime and law.
- Unit 3: International issues: USA: this unit focuses on the USA studying its government and social issues within the country.
- Added Value Unit / Assignment: This unit / task requires learners to select a topic of study that interests them. They will then be expected to gather evidence on this topic from a variety of different sources and to present this information accordingly.
Assessment:
- Internal: Weekly tests based on the exam questions (results will generate a working grade for tracking purposes)
- External:
- SQA Examination: 2 hours and 20 minutes, 80 marks.
- Assignment: 20 marks (a one hour ‘write up’ done under exam conditions and assessed externally by the SQA)
Progression Pathway:
- Higher Modern Studies with a National 5 C or above.
