History: Higher

Entry Requirements:

  • Nat 5 History (a pass in other subjects like National 5 Modern Studies or English can also be considered)
  • Good literacy skills are also an advantage for the study of history.

Course Content:

  • Scottish: The Era of the Great War, 1910-1928 or Wars of independence
  • British: Britain 1850-1951
  • European and World: USA 1918-1968

There is also an assignment for which candidates can choose a topic of interest  related to the course research and then produce an essay style write up for assessment. 

Assessment:

  • Internal: Weekly tests based on the exam questions (results will generate a working grade for tracking purposes) 
  • External:

SQA Examination: 80 marks 

Paper 1 – two essays (22 marks each) 

Paper 2 – three source based questions, one knowledge question

(36 marks in total)  

Assignment: 30 marks (a ‘write up’ done under exam conditions and assessed externally by the SQA)

Progression Pathway:

  • Advanced Higher History
  • History has transferable skills to the other Social Subjects such as Modern Studies, Geography and RMPS.
