Homework 25.4.18

Literacy

A note about reading:  please do not read beyond the chapters/pages that are issued as homework.  I often assess the children’s skills in prediction using clues from the text.  It is difficult to do this when they have already read the chapters/pages at home.  If your child wants to read more than what is given as homework please encourage them to read library books or books from home.  Many thanks for your understanding.  🙂

We are learning about the double ff sound.  Please tell your family when and why we would use this sound.

Try playing this game:  click here

Try keeping a word list of anytime you encounter this word throughout the week.  You might see it on street signs, in a game, on a TV advert, in the shops or in a storybook.  Please tell me the total number of ff words you found by replying to this post.

We are learning to get better at spelling the magic e o_e sound.   Try playing this game: click here

We are learning to get better at spelling the ay sound.  Please click here to watch a short video about it.  Try keeping a word list of anytime you encounter this word throughout the week.  You might see it on street signs, in a game, on a TV advert, in the shops or in a storybook.  Please tell me the total number of ay words you found by replying to this post.

Yellow

We are learning to get better at spelling the ‘th’ sound.  Please remember that this is said differently from ‘f’.  We have all been finding this tricky.  Remember to stick your tongue out slightly when saying ‘th’. Please click here to watch a short video about th.   Try keeping a word list of anytime you encounter this word throughout the week.  You might see it on street signs, in a game, on a TV advert, in the shops or in a storybook.  Please tell me the total number of o_e words you found by replying to this post.

Parents please note:  hunting for words in real life contexts makes literacy more relevant for young learners.   It also encourages them to develop their vocabulary and hopefully encourages them to use different types of text and media.

Maths

Pentagons

We are learning about the different ways of making 1000.   Try writing down all the different ways of making 10 e.g. 5+5, 9+1, 3+7 etc.  We should be able to do this really quickly – you could try timing us to make it fun! 🙂 Now try transforming these sums to make different ways of making 1000.  For example, 7+3 would become 700+300.  Making links in this way helps children to feel confident in maths.  Don’t forget about the switchers.  As an additional challenge you could try finding the different ways of making 1000 when a number has 50 within it.  For example 350 + what makes 1000?

Circles

We are learning about the different ways of making 100.   Try writing down all the different ways of making 10 e.g. 5+5, 9+1, 3+7 etc.  We should be able to do this really quickly – you could try timing us to make it fun! 🙂 Now try transforming these sums to make different ways of making 100.  For example, 7+3 would become 70+30.  Making links in this way helps children to feel confident in maths.  Don’t forget about the switchers.

Squares

We are learning about the different ways of making 20.  Try writing down all the different ways of making 10 e.g. 5+5, 9+1, 3+7 etc.  Now try transforming these sums to make different ways of making 100.  For example, 7+3 would become 17+3.  Making links in this way helps children to feel confident in maths.  Don’t forget about the switchers.

Rectangles

We are learning to make 10 in different ways e.g. 4+6, 3+7.  Use blocks, toy cars, counters or any other small object and 2 plates or trays to try finding the different ways of making 10.  To do this count out 10 objects and then try arranging them in different ways on the plate.  Try putting 10 on one plate.  How many does this mean are on the other plate?  What would the sum be?  10 (on 1 plate) + 0 (on the other plate) = 10 altogether.  Try saying the sum to your family.  (This helps us understand the mathematical language).  Try finding 11 different ways of arranging the objects.  Parents please note: working with practical materials at this stage is crucial.  It is beneficial for children to be able to feel and see the objects they are adding with.  This is more beneficial than writing them down at this stage.

Additional optional homework: ICT

We have been learning about Internet safety.  We are finding out about safe and unsafe words that we can use when searching for games and information.

We have also been learning how to safely load and use a website.  This week we have been using the ‘Topmarks’ website to develop our numeracy skills.  The boys and girls are becoming more confident navigating their way around the website to choose games that are of a suitable level of challenge.  Click here if you would like to try these games at home.
