TEACHING MUSIC THROUGH SONG
Delivered by Jenny England, primary music specialistBring the joy of song into your classroom, whilst building skills in the key elements of music. The voice is our most accessible instrument, a wonderful resource to support a sense of belonging, self expression and to develop musical skills. This session is designed to give you ease and inspiration to have fun with singing. Absolutely no experience required, those less confident about singing especially welcome. You will learn to:
• ‘Work’ a song to explore tempo, dynamics, rhythm, ostinato patterns and improvisation.
• Achieve success when singing in two or more parts
• Encourage accurate pitching
• Invent games and have fun with songs
• Become more confident singing with your class

CREATIVE, FUN STORYTELLING

We believe story, poetry, voice and language play are an essential key to language development, enjoyment in learning and teaching, and to delivering the Curriculum for Excellence in a way that engages and inspires young people and their teachers for life. This workshop aims to re-invigorate teachers to take a creative, fun approach to using storytelling as a medium for teaching right across the curriculum. Join storyteller and musician Marion Kenny for practical tools and tips to boost your confidence, extend your repertoire, and refresh your spirit and love of language. Appropriate for all levels.

PAINTING AND THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOUR

Come along and enjoy an introduction to a variety of painting techniques to pass on to your pupils, focusing on applying paint in exciting ways. This session will arm you with confidence to teach art introducing several different media. We will also help open up the world of colour and help you teach colour theory in an engaging and interesting way (without a colour wheel!) You will learn about how colour relates to history, geology, fashion, controversy, language, and literature whilst investigating the psychology and meaning of colour. Appropriate for all levels.

MUSICAL COMPOSITION AND IMPROVISATION

Inventing is a core part of the music curriculum, and one in which many teachers identify a lack of confidence and skills. Allowing children to invent their own music opens a creative door, that can inspire a love of music. Let’s not miss that opportunity, come and learn some skills for
composition. You will learn:
• Guidelines to support structure and form when setting inventing tasks
• How to use the voice to compose
• Tips for composing in groups
• Practices to inspire and encourage self expression

INSTRUMENTAL INSTRUCTION IN THE CLASSROOM

Have you experienced chaos in the classroom when you take out the percussion box, or the pain of beginning recorder teaching! Come along and learn how we can improve our skills, and hence enjoyment and learning for all, in facilitating instrumental ensemble playing in the classroom. You will learn:
• Principles and progression for teaching instrumental skills
• What works at each learning level
• Basic conducting skills
• Ideas for mixed ensemble groups
All welcome, no previous instrumental experience required. We will cover the use of classroom instruments from P1-P7.
