Community Sport Hubs

The Community Sport Hub initiative is sportscotland’s contribution to the Scottish Government’s 2014 legacy plan. The initiative takes an exciting and innovative approach to the development of club and community sport. It is designed to increase the number of people of all ages participating in sport and physical activity in communities across Scotland.

Community Sport Hubs focus on the clubs and other local organisations that want to work together to improve the sport offered in their local community. The ‘Hub’ is essentially a collective of progressive sport clubs and partners working together in a local community.

Each community sport hub is unique but the common thread is that each works to the following five principles:
• Growth in participation
• Engage the local community
• Promote community leadership
• Offer a range of sporting opportunities
• Bring all appropriate (key) partners/ groups/people together

Every community sport hub develops their own vision and values to ensure all involved are clear on the work they will do together, which is detailed in a simple, clear plan.

Education colleagues are a key partner in successful Community Sport Hubs. Pathways into performance and lifelong participation in sport and physical activity is a common thread between Curriculum for Excellence, Community Sport Hubs, Active Schools and the Council’s Strategic Framework for Sport (2015 – 2019) and we are keen to establish productive and collaborative relationships between schools and community sports club providers. Community Sport Hubs can also offer leadership opportunities to young people including the opportunity to participate in the Young Hub Leader programme which ensures that young people are involved in decision making in their communities.

Argyll and Bute Council is currently undertaking scoping activities with sports clubs, Active Schools and partners in Helensburgh, Dunoon and Oban with a view to three more Community Sport Hubs being established in the next two years. We expect this to be completed by the end of September and subsequently present the plan for Community Sport Hubs delivery until March 2017. Please see below for Sports Hub Documents
