Primary 1 were finding out about fair-trade today from Pablo the super banana (super because he is a fair-trade banana!). We learnt about where bananas come from, their long journey before arriving in our shops, and what it means to buy fair-trade produce. We then made our own super bananas and explored where our favourite foods come from.
Primary 1 listened to the story of The Man Who Planted Trees from the Woodland Trust. We discussed why trees are important and what items are made from wood. We then created our own trees in art – some of our parents worked with us too!
The school is working towards our Silver award from the Woodland Trust. In the spring, the eco committee are going to plat some saplings in our wood. We can’t wait to see these take root and begin to grow!
Primary 1 were exploring and appreciating food from around the world. Lucky for us we had the opportunity to taste Sri Lankan tea, dahl and coconut roti. We loved the tea (very sweet!) and enjoyed scoffing the roti, and many of us devoured the dahl (not spicy!)

While we enjoyed the food and tea, we thought about other food we had tried for the first time (and that we shouldn’t say “I don’t like that!” until we have at least tasted it!).
This term P1 have been learning about money. We set up our own shop – and post office – in class, just like the shop and post office in our recent topic, Katie Morag. We also went to PirateLand, imagining ourselves as pirates on a shopping spree… now, what would we buy?!

Inspired by our mini-beast explorations and discoveries, we decided to head out doors and ‘graffiti’ mini beast paintings on the playground bus shelter… and then graffitied the ground too! We loved painting our beasts and being able to apply what we had learned about them (some have 6 legs, others 8, some have wings and some squirm)!
Primary 1 celebrated World Book Day this year sharing their favourite books with their friends from Primary 3. We were able to show our reading skills and also enjoyed being read to, as well as sharing what we liked about our books. Happy reading!
Over the last two weeks we have had various opportunities to share our learning with our parents. They have joined us for Active Literacy, Maths, some 1950’s creative art work and science making and testing boats! What a lot of learning to pack in 🙂
Primary 1- 3 put on a fantastic production of the Christmas story told through the eyes of a clumsy angel, who ended up having a very important job to do.
They shared the Nativity over three performances, one of which was provided by our very kind friends in Ardardan. They transformed their premises for us at night and made it into a magical evening with real animals.
The children had various opportunities to step out of their comfort zones in acting and have definitely increased in their own confidence.
Primary 1 had the absolute honour of meeting the local Helensburgh Fire Brigade Team last week. Took on the role of sitting in the driving seat, exploring the tools on the truck and the highlight .. using the hose!
The children were bouncing with enthusiasm and excitement as they worked with the men. They also had the opportunity to ask them some of their questions from our IDL People Who Help Us.
It was a very special ending to our very worthwhile and exciting topic.
We made the Fire Brigade a wonderful card and took them some boxes of Heros to say a massive thank you for coming. We even got a mention in the local Helensburgh Advertiser.

This week it was Primary 1’s responsibility to pick up the litter in our playgrounds. We were pleased that we didn’ t find very much. The children enjoyed taking it in turns to use the pickers. After we weighed it we only had 1.5kg all week, hooray!
I wonder which class it will be next week? Gold star Primary 1!
