Be the Change Fairtrade Breakfast

The Eco Committee agreed that this term we should participate in Fairtrade Fortnight to raise awareness of Fairtrade products and fairer trade. This year the theme for Fairtrade Fortnight was ‘Be the Change’ which fits really well with our Rights Respecting Schools focus on taking action, getting involved and being global citizens. They decided that we should have a Fairtrade Breakfast involving family and friends.  During KIT (Keills Improvement Team) meetings the children learned what Fairtrade meant and the impact of Fairtrade on farmers, workers and the environment. They participated in different activities and played games to develop their knowledge and understanding. They also investigated and discussed the children’s rights that were being met by the positive impact of Fairtrade, as well as how Fairtrade supports the UN Global Goals.

The children planned, organised and prepared for our Fairtrade Breakfast. The children wrote invitations to parents and family members; baked chocolate and banana muffins,  banana waffles and chocolate and banana squares; prepared menus, practised being waiters and waitresses; practised being chefs; filled and decorated the Fairtrade hamper for the raffle; rehearsed welcoming parents and family to the school; wrote welcome  and closing speeches; prepared how to do the Fairtrade survey; made decorations for the hall including bunting,  a ‘Be the Change, Fairtrade Breakfast’ banner and decorating the tables with vases of flowers; revisited the UNCRC and UN Global Goals to be displayed on information boards and practised the games to play with parents and family members. Every child was involved and they were all very, very busy, working hard to get everything together.

The children were all organised for the big day and our ‘Be the Change – Fairtrade Breakfast’, was a huge success!

 

Planning for a Sustainable Future for our School

As part of the climate change focus, the children were given a group challenge to create a model of our school in the future – 2045. The children had to apply their knowledge and understanding of climate action, and incorporate as many different elements to create an eco friendly school.

The Eco Committee have been working hard agreeing new Eco Actions and finding a way of displaying our new action plan.

As a whole school community, the children decided that we need to work on four topics:

• Climate change
• Food and the environment
• Energy
• Litter

Our display is designed to show the progress the children are making putting these actions into action!
