In addition our special language focus, we have also been developing a number of other skills;

Numeracy – We have been learning all about how to manage finances by creating a budget.  Mrs Welsh set us the task of planning a holiday with a set criteria and a budget.  Here is one of the proposals put forward for consideration.

IDL – We have continued to work on our Russian topic, which has had even more relevance now given how much Russia has been in the news lately.  We have been learning about the physical and human geography of Russia – learning about its varying biomes.  To link with our writing theme of “information texts,” we have also been investigating and learning about famous Russians like Putin, Rasputin, Gagarin and Tchaikovsky. We will make notes and then use our notes to write a biography.

Next week we will be beginning a mystery topic.  Mrs Welsh had been giving us clues each day this week to help us guess what it is.  Do you think you know?

As well as developing our ball skills in PE, we have also been learning how to do orienteering.  We have been learning how to read maps accurately and even participated in an orienteering course around the school grounds. We also became quite interested in the Winter Olympics, especially when Team GB were doing so well.  Miss Foote and Mrs Welsh arranged for some indoor curling equipment to be delivered so we could practise the skills we had observed.

In science we have been investigating materials by carrying out a number of different experiments.  We were separating materials by filtering (sand/water), sieving (Flour/ raisins), Evaporation (Salt/water) and magnetism (rice/paperclips).  We have also been investigating reversible and irreversible reactions by mixing warm milk and vinegar to create casein plastic and bicarbonate of soda and vinegar to create carbon dioxide.

Numeracy and Maths

In numeracy we have been learning how to calculate the missing digit in an algebra equation. We have been sharing different strategies and finding the one that works best for us.  In maths, we have been learning how to calculate and measure angles using a protractor.

Literacy

In literacy we have been focussing on the Scots Language as part of our Whole School Project.  We learned a range of Scottish words including “Wheesht,” and “Glasik.”  We were then using the words learned during our spelling tasks to translate familiar stories into Scots.  We have also been looking at famous Scots cartoon characters – The Broons and Oor Wullie.  We discussed characterisation and then used that knowledge to complete a selection of comic strips. We have also been learning a selection of Scottish poems for our Scottish Poetry Recital.

Health and Wellbeing

In PE we have been working on our Handball skills.  We have been practising controlling the ball with our hands – bouncing, shooting and intercepting.  We have also been working on an Orienteering project where we have been improving our map reading skills.  We plan to link this to our Scots topic and create our own Oor Wullie Bucket Trail, modelled on the original one in 2019.

IDL

As part of our Scots focus, we had a go at making Scotch broth soup.  We read the recipe, followed the instructions and prepared all the ingredients independently before of course sampling!

We have also been carrying out scientific experiments looking at the properties of different materials.  We have tested magnetism, flexibility, transparency, Conductivity and ability to insulate effectively.

Health and Wellbeing

We have been discussing our Dreams and Goals for the future.  We have created electronic presentations to share with the rest of the class.

P6W Christmas Blog 22.12.21

Primary 6 Blog

It has been a busy few weeks in Primary 6W!

In numeracy we have been continuing to work on our fractions, decimals and percentages topic.  We have been learning how to create equivalent and simplified fractions as well as learning how to convert fractions to decimals and decimals to percentages.  In Maths we have been learning to calculate the area and perimeter of a shape.

In literacy we have been working on improving our poetry skills by creating our own poems based on the themes of WW2 and Christmas.  As part of our listening and talking topic we have been learning to create small weekly presentations about “Our Weekend” to share with the class.  We make some notes in our jotter to help us remember the key parts we want to share.

In Health and Wellbeing we have been continuing to develop our abilities in balance and control through Parkour.  We have designed and created our own Parkour Agility courses using a variety of gym equipment to really test ourselves.  We have also been improving our rhythm and timing through the context of dance, in preparation for our Christmas Party.  We learned the steps to The Slosh, 5, 6, 7, 8, The Macarena, The Cha Cha Slide and The Superman Dance.  We even got to teach the entire school the dances in our whole school Christmas Danceathon.

We have also been learning about The Earthshot Prize as part of our Health and Wellbeing Topic. We have listened to all the nominations for each of the categories and voted for the ones we think are the best ideas.  Then we watched the prize ceremony to see if our guess was correct.

In art we have been creating winter mosaic scenes using torn paper in different shades of blue.  We will share some pictures once they have been completed.

In Science we took part in a whole school STEAM Challenge.  Our class had to make a reindeer that could fly.  We were given balloons, string paper and pegs.  This was a difficult challenge but some of us managed to do it.  We learned how to improve our experiment by understanding how friction and thrust works.

In French we have been investigating how people in France celebrate Christmas and learning French vocabulary linked to Christmas.

As part of our enterprise topic we created some “Melted Snowman Slime” and some green “Grinch Slime to sell at the Christmas Fair.  We also had some decorated CD decoration to sell too.  We were really pleased to see that all our items sold out in the first few ours of the fair and so we have managed to make a profit which will go into school funds to help buy more art resources.

We are also very pleased to hear that The Windyknowe Christmas Window Display, which was organised by Tesco Bathgate, won first prize!

We have also enjoyed our Christmas Party, Christmas Lunch and Movie morning since our last Blog Update.

We hope you all have a safe, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year!!
