P6W Blog 23rd December 2022

It has been another very busy few weeks in P6, especially in the lead up to Christmas!

In literacy we have developing our comprehensions skills by reading extracts from Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” and have been learning how to create imagined recounts by writing dairies from the point of view of people living through the war. As part of our STEAM project we created activities to teach to infant classes using Christmas Stories as inspiration – we chose “The Snowman.”  Some of our children visited the Primary One classes to do snowman vegetable prints and snowman inspired Beebot tasks where the children could practise their coordinates, direction and ICT Skills.  We have also been creating Christmas Comic strips and listening and talking, we presented our class talks on famous World War 2 figures.

In numeracy we have been learning how to convert fractions into decimals and investigating percentages and how they link to fraction and decimals.  In Maths we have continued to investigate different ways to measure, specifically learning how to measure area and perimeter of simple and compound shapes.

In art we have been creating “Blitz Art” to display on the walls.  We created an oil pastel background using red, yellow and orange colour and then created a foreground of silhouettes using black card. In health and well-l being we have been thinking about our dreams and goals for the future.

We had our Christmas party where we played games such as Christmas Musical Statues, Christmas Corners and Musical Arms. We also did some of the dances we had been practising in PE including The Slosh, The Macarena and The Cha Cha Slide.

We have been working on developing our STEAM skills through a variety of tasks including creating a moving sleigh for Santa using straws and a balloon, creating melted snowmen biscuits and 3D paper models of gingerbread houses, snowmen, spitfires and Anderson Shelters. We went on our Community Christmas walk wearing the Elf headbands that we had created – we managed to get 76 “toots” from people passing in their cars.

P6W Blog Update 2nd December 2022

It has been a very busy 2 weeks in the P6W classroom.

Literacy

In writing, we have been creating poetry that links to our World War 2 topic.  We have been focusing on creating a repeating pattern and using figurative language to engage the reader.

Here is one of the poems created by MW:

Fear looks like a soldier,

Cowering the corner,

Like a terrified rabbit.

Fear sounds like a soldier,

Screaming so loud,

Like a new born baby.

Fear smells like a soldier,

Covering his face with an elbow,

To stop inhaling the smoke.

Fear feels like a soldier,

Saying goodbye to his wife,

Heading off to war.

Fear tastes like a soldier,

Bleeding from his head,

Hiding for his life.

Fear is hiding in your hands,

So heavy you can barely move it,

So you need to hide.

We have also been learning how to write diary entries.  We looked at examples of diaries, including the diary of Anne Frank and then created our own fictional diary of a child during the Blitz.

Numeracy

In numeracy we have continued our work on Decimals, Fractions and Percentages.  We have been learning how to find fractions of amounts and how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions (and back again).  In Maths, we have been developing our measuring skills by learning how to measure and compare capacity.

Health

In PE, we have been learning some new dances for our Christmas party.  We have been practising the moves, improving coordination and balance as well as our listening and following skills.  So far we have practised The Slosh, The Macarena, The Cha Cha Slide and 5, 6, 7, 8.

Other

We have been working very hard on our Christmas Enterprise project which was to design and make a Christmas Tealight Holder.  First we had to do research and then we had to present our idea to Mrs Angus.  Then we designed our pots on paper before making them out of air drying clay.

We also created some wooden gift tags to sell at the fayre too.  Mrs Welsh let us try her Pyrography tool to create burned designs in the wood.  We had to be very careful as the tool gets VERY hot.

Literacy

In literacy, we have been making links between topic and writing.  We have written imagined recounts of evacuated children and created imaginative poems about life in the trenches. We have also make links with our grammar and punctuation lessons by including figurative language, similes, metaphors and speech.

Numeracy

In numeracy, we have started working with decimals.  We have learned how to order, round, add subtract and multiply decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.

Next we will be looking at fractions. We will be understanding how to identify and simplify fractions as well as matching fractions to their equivalent decimal number. In Maths, we have continued to develop our knowledge and understanding of measuring length, weight and volume.

Other

In groups, we have been discussing what we already know about World War 2 and what we would like to learn.  We have created a KWL grid to show what we plan to investigate during our topic.  We have created a timeline to show the correct order of the main events that lead to the start of the war.

In science, we have been participating in an Air Race Challenge.  For the challenge we have investigated different jobs to do with aerospace including air traffic control, engineer and pilot.  We have researched a range of famous aviators including Amelia Earhart and Tim Peake.  Next we will be designing an obstacle course for a set of drones to fly through.
