Literacy

In literacy we have been learning how to use commas correctly to separate items in a list and how to use a prefix and suffix to change the meaning of a word. As part of our book week celebrations we visited the nursery to share and read our favourite stories with them.

Maths and Numeracy

In numeracy, we have been learning how to identify factors of numbers and prime numbers and have been learning how to manage money, work within a budget and discussing the different ways we can save and pay for goods. In Maths we have been learning how to accurately measure angles using a protractor.

Other

In science, we have continued our “Food Chains” topic by designing and creating our own rainforest creature and labelling their characteristics for survival.  We did this by creating our own set of class Top Triumph cards.

In Health and Well Being we have been learning how to keep ourselves safe online.  We learned about CEOP and they also help keep us safe online

In PE, we have been developing our ball skills for Handball and Tennis.  In Handball we have been learning how to throw and catch the ball correctly and in tennis we have been learning how to do a forehand and back hand stroke.

In IDL we have been continuing our investigations into Scottish Myths and Legends. We have been discussing the difference between a legend and a myth and then investigated familiar Scottish tales such as the Loch Ness Monster and The Kelpies. We will also be researching the Dechmont Alien Landing and the Scottish Witch Trials. We even used art and craft materials to design and make our own mythological creatures.

As part of Languages week we decorated our classroom door to celebrate Chinese culture, linking it to Chinese New Year. We learned how to write our name in Chinese, created a dragon using our handprints and crafted traditional Chinese lanterns.

We have started preparation for our upper school show which is based on the work of the Beatles.  We have been learning songs to sing and some of us have speaking parts to learn.

Mrs Welsh was telling us about how much she enjoyed learning to curl with her family so we have borrowed the cluster indoor curling equipment to learn some of the skills needed.

Primary 6W Blog Update

We have been very busy in P6 since returning from Christmas break. We have welcomed our teaching student, Miss McAdam, who will be working with us until February 24th

Literacy

We have been linking our literacy work to our Scottish Focus Fortnight in school. We have been reading The Eejits in Scots and trying to translate it back to English. We have been reading some of Mrs Welsh’s old Oor Wullie and Broons books in order to help us create our own comic strips. We have been using scots dictionaries to find the scots equivalent for our spelling words and we have been learning to recite a piece of Scottish poetry as part of our Robert Burns Recital. We also had a Vertical Learning afternoon where we mixed with pupils form P5 and other teachers to learn different aspects of Scottish literature. With Mrs Welsh, we were learning about the importance of Scots Gaelic and how to say numbers and colours in Gaelic too.

This week we have been linking writing to our Scottish Myths and Legends topic by researching, identifying and writing about the differences between myths and legends in different cultures.

Numeracy and Maths

In numeracy we have been developing our ability to solve and simplify a range of algebraic equations and in maths we have been working on different ways to identify position and movement. This has included revision how to use coordinates in both 1 and 4 quadrants and how to identify, label and measure angles using a protractor. We have also been using Plickers to demonstrate our learning.

Others

In PE we have been learning the skills needed to play both handball and tennis. In Health we have been discussing how friendships can change over time and how to resolve conflicts.

As part of Chinese New Year celebrations, we had a go at making Chinese Chicken Noodle Soup. By doing this we were developing our skills in chopping, slicing, grating and boiling.

P6W Blog 23rd December 2022

It has been another very busy few weeks in P6, especially in the lead up to Christmas!

In literacy we have developing our comprehensions skills by reading extracts from Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” and have been learning how to create imagined recounts by writing dairies from the point of view of people living through the war. As part of our STEAM project we created activities to teach to infant classes using Christmas Stories as inspiration – we chose “The Snowman.”  Some of our children visited the Primary One classes to do snowman vegetable prints and snowman inspired Beebot tasks where the children could practise their coordinates, direction and ICT Skills.  We have also been creating Christmas Comic strips and listening and talking, we presented our class talks on famous World War 2 figures.

In numeracy we have been learning how to convert fractions into decimals and investigating percentages and how they link to fraction and decimals.  In Maths we have continued to investigate different ways to measure, specifically learning how to measure area and perimeter of simple and compound shapes.

In art we have been creating “Blitz Art” to display on the walls.  We created an oil pastel background using red, yellow and orange colour and then created a foreground of silhouettes using black card. In health and well-l being we have been thinking about our dreams and goals for the future.

We had our Christmas party where we played games such as Christmas Musical Statues, Christmas Corners and Musical Arms. We also did some of the dances we had been practising in PE including The Slosh, The Macarena and The Cha Cha Slide.

We have been working on developing our STEAM skills through a variety of tasks including creating a moving sleigh for Santa using straws and a balloon, creating melted snowmen biscuits and 3D paper models of gingerbread houses, snowmen, spitfires and Anderson Shelters. We went on our Community Christmas walk wearing the Elf headbands that we had created – we managed to get 76 “toots” from people passing in their cars.
