P1a 19.3.19

P1a have been very busy over the last few weeks learning about odd and even numbers, doubles, halves of numbers and skip counting in twos. We have been doing actions as we count in twos to 20 and we have been using lots of practical materials to find addition doubles and halves of  given numbers. This week we are going to be counting in tens and beginning to look at how bigger numbers are made of tens and ones.

In Literacy we have been learning about the sounds ai, ay, oi, and oy. We especially enjoyed a game where we had to work out the oi or oy words stuck to our backs by asking each other questions. This week we will be learning about the sound oa. In writing we have been trying to spell our tricky words correctly such as remembering the ‘a’ in was!

As part of our transport topic we have been learning about ships and submarines. Some of us made submarines from plastic bottles. Others made submarines or ships from large cardboard boxes. We have loved playing in the boxes and Mrs Cook has been very impressed with our co-operation and imaginative ideas.

Andrew – I liked doubles like double ten is twenty.

Cody – I liked learning how submarines have beds and lots of controls.

Ella-Rose – I like doing number talks

Eryn – I learnt ‘ai’.

Ethan – I liked making a sailing boat.

Euan – I liked the crashed car at the museum.

Frankie – I liked the old transport in the museum.

Konstancja – I liked learning how submarines can see with a periscope.

Kyle – I liked learning about how submarines go under the water.

Lucie – I liked making a submarine model with Cody

Luke – I liked making a ship with Lucie.

Nola – I liked making a model boat.

Rebecca – I liked making a model of a submarine with people inside

In numeracy we have been learning about the different words for adding and subtracting such as plus, minus, more, fewer, altogether and less. We have also been talking about different strategies for adding and subtracting and trying to remember some number facts. With Mr Paul we have been learning about length and have been using lots of different practical materials to measure things in class.

As part of our literacy we have been trying to speak in a loud, clear voice and face the people we are talking to. We have also been trying to be good listeners by looking at the person who is talking, thinking about what they are saying and not interrupting. In reading and writing we have been focusing on factual texts. We can identify a contents page, an index, a list, an instruction, a speech bubble and a label. Some of us have been doing some wonderful stories and factual writing by ourselves during our choosing time.

Our transport topic has moved on to learning about transport in other countries, space rockets, hot air balloons and helicopters. We really impressed Mrs Cook with our problem-solving, independence and teamwork as we created a sleigh pulled by huskies and a space rocket for Julianne (our class puppet). We found out how hot air balloons and helicopters work and tried making some of our own. Sometimes we had to be resilient and not give up when things didn’t work the first time!

We are looking forward to our bike trip with Sustrans and our visit to The Museum of Transport.

Ella – Rose  – I have got better at taking away with bigger numbers

Rebecca – I know that rockets have fire when they lift off.

Eryn – Hot air balloons need fire to make them go up.

Ethan – We made paper helicopters and we threw them up and they spun.

Hope – I can label the bits of a helicopter

Olivia – Hot air balloons use fire to go up and they have little holes to go down

Luke – I have learnt how to read and write tricky words like ‘the’ and ‘because’

Andrew – I have been practising sounding out words.

Ayleigh – I have been learning doubles of numbers.

Cody – I have been learning to use ‘and’ when I am writing a story.

Euan – I know how to write the tricky words ‘because’ and ‘your’.

Frankie – To put air into a hot air balloon you need a big fan.

Konstancja – Rockets go into space and they need fire to fly up.

Nola – I can read tricky words like ‘was’  and ‘she’.

Lucie- In my reading books there are labels, speech bubbles, a contents page, an index and lists. They are fact books.

P1a 28.1.19

Over the last two weeks we have been busy practising our subtraction strategies. We have learnt how to use objects, pictures, our fingers and a numberline for numbers less than 10. When we take away from bigger numbers we have been learning to touch our heads as we say the starting number and count back using our fingers. This needs us to be very good at saying numbers backwards from 20 so we are still practising this too. We have also noticed that when subtracting ten from a teens number the units number stays the same.

In literacy we have been using whiteboards to write words on the lines with the correct letter formation. We have all got so much better at this in just two weeks! Our new sounds have been ng, wh and ph. In story writing we are trying hard to sound out words by ourselves and to remember finger spaces between the words.

During our topic time we have been learning about maps by looking at real maps, building towns and creating our own maps of the towns, programming Beebot and Pixie to move about on maps and drawing our own map of a train journey. We have also been learning about different kinds of trains and investigating what freight trains carry. Lots of us made model trains and stations from junk materials or Lego.

Luke – Freight trains don’t carry people. They carry heavy things like coal.

Frankie – Bullet trains go so fast.

Cody – Phil starts with ‘ph’

Andrew –Some trains carry people and other trains carry different stuff.

Eryn – Maps show you where to go. They can show you different countries and places.

Olivia – Trains have maps for underground to show you where to go.

Konstancja – I have a map in my car. It can get us back home if we get lost.

Ethan – You can press buttons like backwards and forwards and sideways on Beebot and Pixie to make them move on maps.

Makinley – Cars are made out of metal.

Rebecca – I learnt how to draw a map.

Euan – You can get normal rail tracks or electric rail tracks.

Hope – When you use Beebot you need to press clear first.

Nola – Whip has a ‘wh’.

Kyle – Photo has a ‘ph’ sound

Lucie – On the map some of the lines are motorways and if there is a little aeroplane it means an airport.
