Mrs Creaney’s Malawi Trip

Tomorrow, Wednesday 7th October, I will be travelling to Malawi to spend 2 weeks working with teachers and children in primary schools, including our new partner school, Nanjala Primary.

Nanjala Primary is a school in the Mulanje district of Malawi where there are 770 children in 7 classes. The children are taught in bare concrete classrooms where the only resources available to the teachers are a blackboard and chalk. The children at Uphall Primary have begun fundraising to provide resources for the children of Nanjala.

Many thanks for those of you who have already handed in pennies for our Malawi Mile as well as pens for the children of Nanjala. We had over 370 pens handed in and I will be taking these with me to enable the children to write letters back to us.

I will keep you updated, Wi-Fi permitting, throughout my time in Malawi.

Kind regards

Mrs Creaney

Primary 2 Home Learning

On Tuesday the children will be bringing their new home learning jotters to show to you. They will have a range of activities to carry out each week which will reinforce what they have been learning in class. Each jotter has an information sheet to help you as parents have a clear idea of how to support the children with these activities as it is something different for all of us. Tomorrow in class we will have a look at some examples of home learning jotters to help the children with this.

Parent appointment times for Thursday 15th October will also be inside the jotters.

The children have had a note home today to say that Mrs Ingham is absent and I shall be teaching the class meanwhile. I am enjoying getting to know them all and look forward to supporting them with their learning over the next wee while!

Regards,
P Sutherland

P6 Cross Country Event

Well done to all the P6 children that took part in this year’s Cluster Cross Country Event.  Everyone finished the course and ran with 100% effort.  A special well done to Kerys for coming 2nd in the girls race and Emma who finished 3rd in the girls race.   Fabulous!

Learning in P1M

Our new Primary 1 children have quickly adjusted to school life and are coping well with the new routines and experiences.  They are enjoying getting to know their class mates and have been very excited to find out what is inside the collection of Marvellous Me boxes that have been created as a homework task.  We used the story of The Rainbow Fish during ‘Friendship Fortnight’ and have talked about the importance of having friends,  who our friends are, who we would like to be friends with and the qualities we look for in a friend.  We have created a class rainbow fish which is now on display in the corridor outside our classroom-pictures to follow next week!  Before the scales could be attached each child had to share their scale with another child in the class and say why they were giving the scale to that person. The children came up with some lovely reasons, these are also on display.

We were very proud when Aidan was given the very first token in the school for sitting well and trying his hardest to learn the new songs and do the corresponding actions.

Stewart was delighted to be invited along to the very first Fun Friday club-he has been an excellent role model in class, listening carefully at all times, following instructions straight away and helping to keep our classroom safe and tidy.

P6/7 – Roof Challenge

The builders arrived in Uphall this week to start work on replacing part of the school roof.  As part of the Technology curriculum, P6/7 has been given the challenge of designing and building a 3D model of a new pitched school roof.  The children will be working in groups of 3 and will be learning to use tools like saws and hammers to help with their models.
