Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all our friends and family! It’s been a busy start to the year and P1R got straight back to business this week with lots of learning.

The focus of the week was Vision and Values. We spent time looking at our school vision statement and values in the classroom and what it meant to us. We discussed that we should try to be like Jesus when we are at school and here are some of the children’s thoughts:

We should work hard-Dexter

Be kind-Brooke

Make friends and play together-Amber

Pray together-Ephraim

Share with one another-Klaudia

Have good manners-Lucy

Respect everyone in our school-Dexter

We then decided to look at our class charter and refresh this for the New Year, we chose a pirate theme.

In literacy we had some revision of all the sounds we know and spent time wordbuilding. Next week we will move onto ee and oo.

image

In maths we finished off our addition topic by learning the number bonds for 10. We watched a news flash to help us and also watched a video about rainbow facts which helped us remember the linking number facts for 10. We also had another go at missing number facts using the number line to help us.

IDL was exciting as we found a message in a bottle, a pirate hat and a pirate eye patch. The letter was from Pirate Pete Pigeon asking us to join him on the Squeaky Sail for some pirate adventures. We’re really excited about this. We used our talking book and visible plan to think of ideas for our adventures. Over the coming weeks we are hoping to transform our classroom and area with some pirate props.

Nursery News

Another busy and exciting week in Nursery. We can’t believe that we have nearly come to the end of another term!

This week we have been getting the Nursery ready for Christmas. We decorated the tree, put up some decorations and we even have our own post office where we can write our letters to Santa and weigh our parcels.  The children have also been very busy putting the finishing touches to their Art work which was then put into our Art Galleries. A big thank you to all the parents and carers who came along and bought the fantastic items. We have very talented children. Once we have the amount made from the galleries we will let you all know and then in the New Year we will discuss with the children which  new resources they would like for Nursery.

On Thursday our AM children attended the Achievement assembly. They all sat very well and Amelia received the award for being a kind and helpful girl in nursery. Well done Amelia.

It is the turn of our PM children to share their learning experiences this week.

Emileigh Rose, Szymon, Lily, Jenny and Robert ” We liked making things in the sparkly play dough.”

Kayla and Ethan ” We loved working at the gluing table.”

Emalie ” I made a manger from the Lego.”

Jamie and Luke ” We drew pictures at the drawing table and loved using the pencils.”

Riley ” I build lots of things with the big blocks.”

Jiya ” I love playing in the house corner.”

Just a little reminder that Tuesday is Nursery party day. The children can come to Nursery wearing their party clothes and you are invited to come back at 1030am and 230pm to see your child receive a present from Santa!

Tuesday is also the last day for handing in any P1 enrolment forms. After Tuesday the forms must be sent to pupil placement. Any questions regarding this please ask any member of the nursery team.

After all the excitement of party day the children will have a relaxing Christmas treat on Wednesday when they will get the opportunity to watch a Christmas movie with a little treat to eat.

The Nursery Team would like to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas with your families and friends.  Thank you for your continued support which is very much appreciated.

We look forward to welcoming the children back on Wednesday 4th January.

The Nursery Team.

P7/6 News

There have been many highlights this week,

Drama – we all really enjoyed the pantomime show “Beauty and The Beast” which visited the school on Wednesday morning.  The acting was great…oh no it wasn’t…oh yes it was!!

Maths – we continued to look at symmetry this week focusing on using diagonal symmetry.  We were able to create patterns using a mirror and dotted paper.  In numeracy we discussed and worked through examples of equivalent fractions.  We formed equivalent fractions by using our multiplication knowledge and the rule of whatever you do to the top you do to the bottom of the fraction.  If you would like further practise try this following link.

http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/fractions/memory_equivalent1.htm

Literacy – we listened to and read the poem “Twas The Night Before Christmas”.  We worked in our pairs/trios and completed both literal and inferential question in a quiz style.  This was great fun and it was brilliant to see the collaborative thinking going on especially for the question “what does luster mean?”  Here is a link to Literacy Shed where you can listen to this Classic piece of literature.

RE – we worked collaboratively to engage with the bible passage Luke 2 – 1:14.  We then created posters to demonstrate our understanding of the Nativity story.

Have a lovely weekend and holiday,

Mrs Currie

Primary 6 News.

On Tuesday we visited Sky Skills Studio.  It was all very exciting.  The pupils worked in small groups to put together a news report.  They all took on different roles: Director, Producer, Reporter, Eye Witness, Experts, Editor. All pupils worked brilliantly in their groups and produced an excellent report highlighting all the learning from our science and technology topic this term. It was excellent to see great team work skills and all pupils getting into role.  I think we have some future TV stars in the class!

It has been a fantastic term and the children have been working very hard to earn pop-poms in our popcorn challenge! They were counted for the last time today and the pupils smashed their target, reaching a total of 995 pom-poms! As a special treat they will be watching a movie next week with some nice treats!

Have a great weekend!

The Christmas spirit has arrived in P4!

We have had a busy week in P4 this week.

We had a mysterious gift arrive in our classroom with a letter attached! We had to try to guess who the gift was from and how it got here! We recorded our ideas and thoughts in a story board format which helped us write a story about ‘The Mysteries Gift’. We enjoyed another visit to the library where we learned more about how to navigate our way through the books and enojoyed doing a relay race to find different authors.

In maths this week we have been learning about grid references and compass points. We made a picture of Santa using grid references and had to navigate our way through Santa’s workshop using our knowledge of compass points. Hannah remembers her compass points using ‘Naughty Elephants Squirt Water’ and Brooke remembers hers by using the ‘Never Eat Shredded Wheat’ acronym.

In topic we have been learning about the different senses. We made posters to share our learning with others and then carried out an investigation to explore how reliable our senses are. We had to smell, listen, taste, feel and look at various different things. Lauren was NOT a fan of the lemon!

We have been getting into the Christmas spirit with our class Christmas tree, our exciting pantomime experience, our Christmas lunch and last but not least our Christmas jumper day! The Choir have been performing at the Lime Kiln and will be joining the community links committee at Crusader Court to entertain the residents with our Christmas Carol singing.

Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond and P4!

P5-7 Winter Ready Activities

Winter Ready Activities

Maths

  • Temperature Challenge – Using either a thermometer or a relevant website find out the temperature of Scotland today. Using appropriate methods find out the temperature of another country in the world and compare the temperatures.  Complete a short report on your findings, you may want to draw a graph or a chart to show your comparisons.
  • Be The Teacher – choose an area of Maths that you are very confident in. Create a worksheet on your chosen Maths topic.  Don’t forget to make an answer sheet too.  Think about how you can make your worksheet interesting and motivating for those who will complete it.
  • Don’t forget you can log onto Sumdog.

Literacy

  • Watch the following clip “Lily and the Snowman” and be inspired to write a Christmas/Winter story.

Take a photograph of your completed snowflake and blog a reply.

  • Science – using household material or if there is snow/ice outside, create a science investigation and write a report describing your findings and results. If you are finding it difficult to choose a question to investigate use the following website for ideas

http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments.html

  • RE – take some time to reflect on the gifts of God in our own lives. Create a prayer for those who are less fortunate than ourselves.  Write the prayer out and add a border and decorations.  Display your prayer in your house.

Good luck,

Mrs Currie, Mrs Reeves, Miss McCormack and Miss Ford

Busy week for P2!!

On Monday we watched the video of The Snowman afterwards we had to sequence the story. This helped us learn that stories have a beginning, middle and end. Also it has shown Miss Boyes that we listened well to the story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dYQNAl48E0

To follow on from this we wrote our own story about our adventure with the snowman.

Leo “My snowman went on the Polar Express with me so I could go to the North Pole.”

Marcus- “Me and my snowman went to candy land.”
Ana- My snowman came with me to a big sunny paradise.”

In numeracy we have been showing Miss Boyes how much we have learned about subtraction. We worked hard to complete our subtraction check-up.

Zoe- “I know that when you subtract the numbers get smaller.”

Vanessa- You always start with the biggest number when you take-away.”
Ana- Another name for subtraction is take-away.”
An example of a subtraction question by Julia- “2 less than 7 equals 5.”

Also in numeracy we have continued with place value. We had a total number and we had to find the addition calculation by splitting the number into tens and units.

An example from Aaron “39= 30+9”
An example from Ahmad- “47= 40+7”
img_5596   img_5597img_5595

This week we have also completed a measurement assessment to show our understanding of area, cm, volume, length and weight.

We have really enjoyed learning how to measure in different ways.

This week we have continued to practise for our nativity show “Busy Busy Bethlehem”.

Lennon “We are practising to speak and sing with good volume.”

Alice- “We have been practising our actions for our songs.”

We can’t wait for you all to see our Nativity next week.

In art with Mrs Thomson we have been creating Polar Bear pictures. We have created our pictures by using crepe paper and glue.

This week in class Miss Boyes has put up our Christmas tree. We love the twinkling lights and the decorations.

On the Altar we now have a stable to represent the Birth of Jesus; we discussed the significance of the stable.

Today is our Ninian’s Natter and we will be reflecting on our learning in term 2 and our aims.

It was lovely to see parents at Ninian’s Natter this afternoon.  All jotters went home today for parents who couldn’t make it so please have a look at the work we have been doing and discuss this with your child. Thank you to all those who made lovely cakes, they all looked delicious.

Just a reminder that we have our class visit to Sky Skills Studio on Tuesday. The pupils have been working hard preparing for their visit. Please return any permission forms on Monday.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

P7/6 are having a ball!

Christmas has arrived in P7/6 and we have based a lot of learning this week around the Christmas theme.

We started off the week by decorating our classroom door,

Jessica said – “we all decorated a bauble with our names and this was added to the display”.

img_06531

We also started a wintry landscape picture.  We used Thomas Kinkade’s work to inspire us.  We discussed how to achieved depth in a picture by using darker/deeper/brighter colours in the forefront of the picture and paler/lighter/muted colours for our background.  These will be completed next week.

Our writing this week was based on a Christmas story. We used a “Story Mountain” to help us plan our work.

img_06541

We watched the advert Mog’s Christmas Calamity” film clip to help inspire us to add good description and action to our work.  When we watched the clip we used the story mountain planning idea to track the action of the film, we discovered that this clip had two mountain peaks.  Have a go and watch the clip to find the two peaks.

http://www.literacyshed.com/mog.html

Maths did not escape the Christmas theme either.  We were working on symmetry and using two lines of symmetry.  One of our tasks was to complete a Christmas cracker design where we were only given one quarter of the picture and using two lines of symmetry we had to complete the cracker.  Great fun and super learning!

Well done P7/6.  Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Currie
