In class this week we have planned our new topic which is Katie Morag.
Here are things which we included on our plan
Wojciech “What does Katie Morag eat?”
Madison “We want to learn about the job of a postman or lady.”
Angelina “Can we find the island on a map?”
Alice “What does she wear?”
For International Week we have been communicating with our Spanish peers by using Spanish phrases to complete our all about me activity. We are excited for them to receive photos of our work. Also for International Week we have been learning about the food of Malawi and their school lunches which we have re-created on paper plates. Miss Boyes also told us all about Mary’s Meals and how they provide food for children in Malawi and other countries who can sometimes go hungry.
We have begun to learn about money. We will be using our knowledge of money to run Katie Morag Post office.
This week we learned how to count money to find the total amount. We are learning to count money within 20p. Here is a fun money game which we could play at home.

In numeracy we have started to learn about multiplication. This week we have been finding how many groups there are, how many objects in each group and the total number.
At our independent station we have been grouping the duplo and unifix cubes.
This would be a fun game to play at home.

Last week we completed a reading task where we had to fill in the missing words for a friendship recipe. This week we have wrote our own friendship recipes in class. Our aim was to use wider range of vocabulary. Miss Boyes said our friendship recipes were lovely to read and was impressed with all of the fantastic sentence openers we used.
In PE we have started our new Gymnastic block.
Madison “In PE we have been learning lots of different balances.”
Josephine “You have to try to hold your balance for 3 seconds.”
Lilly “My favourite balance was the bridge.”
Vanessa “Another balance which we practised was the shoulder stand.”
Poppy “I was practising the table top balance.”
It is important that we remember our PE kit for a Wednesday and a Thursday.
Lastly we would like to finish off our blog by saying that Primary 2 will really miss seeing Miss Smyth’s smiley face everyday! We wish her lots and lots of luck in her new job and we know that she will be an asset to her new school.
Wishing everyone a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and P2!
It has been a packed week.
PE – Freya said “this has been a highlight of the week”. Mr McCurdy worked with our class on cartwheels on Tuesday and we were head over heels pleased with the progress we made. On Thursday when it was our class teacher PE time we worked on different balances. Photos will be added next week (the i-pad has decided to go on weekend mode early – sorry!)
Maths – Sophia said “we learned about algebra this week”. Some of the children have continued their work on function machines and others have started to work with equations where a letter represents a missing number. We have also been working on our skills at telling the time using 12 hour and 24 hour clocks. Here is a website for some extra practise with this skill.
http://www.skoool.com.eg/english/skoool_bundle/content/primary/maths/24_hour_time/index.html
Literacy – We have focused on our grammar skills this week and linked this to our reading work as we have started using Task Maps again. In our writing this week we had to finish a story which had already been started. Jessica said “we had to think of an unpredictable way to end the story!” The story was called Tom’s Terror and in the starter it explains that Tom sees a shadow in an old deserted school building and decides to investigate! We discussed the obvious answers such as Zombies or ghost etc but decided to create a much more unique take on the story. There were some great ideas…Jack – It was his surprise birthday party, Oskar and Kornelia – It was a former pupil looking for something he had hidden many years before and Reece – it was the former janitor who wanted to reopen the school. Great work P7/6
IDL – We learned about Malawi this week and Mrs Currie even tweeted (her first ever tweet!). This was a link with the International Week theme in the whole school. check out our tweet to see a photo of our class display we made!
Can’t wait until you see our new INCREDIBLE maths wall next week, something worth logging on for!
Mrs Currie
This was the theme of the week across the school and the children took part in various learning experiences to explore the word ‘international’ and Global Citizenship. We looked at friendship as an important value for all to have and shared what we thought were good qualities in a friend. Here are some of our suggestions:
Klaudia-someone who plays with you
Lloyd-someone who likes the same things as you
Brooke- someone who is kind
Abigail-someone who loves you
We then asked some of our friends in the classroom to share their culture and mother tongue language with us. Klaudia and Dawid taught us some Polish phrases which we tweeted about! We continued this international theme by looking at children who lived in Malawi as we are linking up with St Margaret’s Academy during Lent to do some work with them on Malawi.
In addition to the above we also continued with our core learning and IDL learning throughout the week.
In phonics we learned all about the ‘ee’ and ‘oo’ sounds who live in Vowel House. We played sorting games, practised writing them and lots more. Did you know they are joining letters but only make one sound? We are really good at joining them and letter join helps us with this.
In writing the focus was to use our imaginations and think about he title ‘If I were a pirate…’ We listened to a song and a poem to inspire us then all had a turn at sharing our thoughts.
Lucy would shoot the cannons.
Dexter would sail the seven seas.
James would steer the ship.
Well done to our 4 star writers this week, check out your dojo messages to see if you were one of these!
Maths was great fun as we learned all about pattern and symmetry. We did lots of practical tasks, sponge pattern painting, smartboard symmetry, pirate symmetry using the smart pals, finish the pattern activities, Pom Pom patterns, peg board patterns. We all agreed that it was easier to stick with 2 colours when making patterns as using 3 got a bit tricky.
PE was exhausting as we have a started a new block of gymnastics, this weeks focus was on balancing and rolling. Ask us about the space shapes we learned and try some of them at home, the squatty alien was the trickiest!
Pirates have taken over the classroom, aarrrr…we’re all enjoying our new topic and have made a start at transforming our classroom and area into pirate territory. We did some fantastic pirate portraits using paint and oil pastels, they are on display on our new Art Gallery wall. We also drew pirates based on the descriptions we were given, they turned out well. We learned about the pirate code and some of the jobs the crew did. Check your letters in future, if you see a black spot it means the pirates are after you!! It has been great to see some of the activities you have been doing at home too-keep up the good work!
Finally we had something sad to think about on Friday, we had to say goodbye, Adios, Au Revoir to Miss Smyth. We have really enjoyed her visits to our classroom and playground and will miss her smile and laughter. Thank you for all your help and we wish you luck on your next adventure!

It’s been an emotional week in Primary 6! We had our last day working with Miss Smyth and we are all going to miss her very much! We wish her luck and hope to see her very soon! Keep smiling!!
Amera-today we had an assembly for Miss Smyth, it was very sad. Most people were crying including Miss Smyth and the staff.
Emma- This week Miss McCormack made a carousel about International week. My favourite station was tasting different foods. In my opinion the feta cheese and hummus were the best.
Reece-This week has been a very busy week with Miss Smyth leaving. We had to learn songs and do lessons for International week at the same time, it has been quite messy but it was fun! 🙂
Declan-This week in class we were looking on Google Earth and Miss McCormack let people look in on different countries.
Emily- This week we tried different foods because it was international week and we made guacamole.
Nicholas – This week we learned about Malawi in Africa and how St. Margret’s are going to help them.
Rugare-International week was fun; we learned about many places and food from different countries.
Have a look at our completed artwork we started last week. We know all about hot and cold colours and used them to create vibrant pictures.
We have had a very busy week in P4! We are 100 % back into the swing of school life after our Christmas break.
We have been participating in ‘International Week’ this week where we focussed on Malawi! We have been learning about a girl who lives in Malawi called Memory. We had an insight into her daily life and compared her life to our own lives. We learned some African dancing, made African instruments and used the netbooks to carry out research about the country itself. We will be continuing with International Week next week but focusing more on different nationalities that we have in our class. Watch this space!
We have been learning about multiplication in maths and have used a range of activities to help us learn. Shannon really enjoyed playing multiplication bingo, Jay enjoyed the written tasks and Haseeb enjoyed playing hit the button on the netbooks.
In PE this week, we have started our new block of Gymnastics. We focussed particularly on rotation and different types of rolls. Ailie enjoyed trying out the dish roll, Brooke enjoyed using the forward roll to move and Evie liked doing her front walkover on both the floor and on the vault.
In literacy, we have been working hard to develop our dictionary skills. Miss Crookston really challenged us ad made us find VERY tricky words. We also had to fid out what type of word it was, e.g. adjective, nouns, or verbs.
We have been working on our typing skills and enjoyed using dance mat typing on the netbooks to help us familiarise ourselves with the keyboard. This got more difficult as we worked through the different stages.
We had an emotional end to the week where we had to say goodbye to Miss Smyth! It is safe to say she will be missed and in P4 we do not know how anyone is going to fill her shoes!! Thank you for everything Miss Smyth!
Although it’s been a short week we have been busy in class.
Miss Boyes was very happy to see us all back and hear about our Christmas holidays.
This week was vision and values week at school. We have been learning lots about the school values and the school vision.
To learn about the school vision (Our Vision is to be a vibrant community of faith and learning where together we learn to grow in the image and likeness of Christ) we went into the Garden. We followed footsteps which were laid out on the ground and every time we came to a new set of footprints Miss Boyes would give us a special card. Each of the cards had an important message about Jesus and his qualities. We are told to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and this helped us to understand what we can do in our own lives to be like Christ.
When we went back to class we spoke about the school vision further. Then we drew our own pictures of Jesus and wrote all of his special qualities. We would like to share these qualities with you at home.
This week we reviewed our class charter. We decided that we did not want to change it however we did want to add some knew promises. We have learnt lots about our rights and responsibilities and this has given us a greater understanding of the promises we can keep.
The Promises which we have added are:
I will not distract others.
I will aim to complete my work.
I will be gentle.
Although all of the school values are of high importance we chose to focus in on Friendship and what it means to be a good friend. We thought about the ingredients you would need for a friendship recipe. We read a recipe but had to fill in the blanks with the ingredients.
Ingredients we chose were: happiness, cheerfulness, kindness, gentleness, laughter, smiles and love.
It is exciting to start a New Year, we spoke about New Years traditions in class. Then we had a think about what a New Years Resolution is. We chose our own and wrote it on our 2017 star. We will try to achieve our resolutions this year.
Examples of our resolutions are:
I will eat a wider range of food.
I will have a healthy diet and stop eating lots of sweets.
I will exercise and stay fit.
I will help my parents in the house with the dishes and tidying.
I will listen to my teacher.
I will keep my bedroom tidy.
In class this week we have refreshed our understanding of numbers to 100. We have been counting forwards and backwards, finding 2 numbers more or less and we have been finding the smallest and largest numbers.
We are looking forward to starting a new topic and learning lots more at school.
Have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!
Welcome back to everyone. For a short week it has been a busy one.
We got straight into a new Maths topic this week which focused on function machines. This will then lead us into algebra and algebraic thinking in the coming two weeks. Have a go at using the function machine links below to practise.

For our IDL work this week we have been re-engaging with the school Vision statement,
Our vision is to be a vibrant community of faith and learning where together we grow in the image and likeness of Christ.
We discussed how we can strive for this vision in our classroom and next week we will refresh our class charter and our vision will be reflected through it. We also discussed our future vision that we have for ourselves and everyone created a poster which showcases what each person would like their future pathway to look like. There were some amazing ideas, Kornelia and Rachel are both interested in becoming ‘youtubers’, Colin would like to become a Marine and Reece is interested in becoming a computer technician.
For PE this term the main focus will be gymnastics, through these lessons we will improve our agility as well as our cooperation skills. We will also continue to develop our ability to give improvement feedback to one another. Please make sure you have appropriate indoor footwear for this. We have also started the long awaited swimming block. The first lesson today went very well. I was so impressed with the water confidence of everyone and the behaviour was of the highest standard, well done!
Homework will start again next week, so have a restful weekend and I look forward to our learning this coming term!
Mrs Currie
Happy New Year!
It has been a short but very busy week for Primary 6. We have been setting new goals for the year and getting back in to our school routine. This week was Vision and Values week. We discussed our school values and vision statement.
Our vision is to be a vibrant community of faith and learning where together we learn to grow in the image and likeness of Christ.
We discussed what characteristics would make someone like Christ and why they are important. We all came up with our own ideas, including: kind, helpful, hard working, respectful, friendly, understanding and fair.
Here are some comments from the pupils about their learning this week:
Kieran – This week is the first week of 2017. We did number talks, where we have to say how we got that answer. We discuss what strategy we used and find out the most efficient way to complete a calculation. In literacy we wrote about our Christmas holiday.
Emma – This week we decided that we were going to change our school charter to Disney and we painted waves inspired by an American artist, Drew Bophy.
Mia – We learned about hot and cold colours using a colour wheel and we learned about visions and values because it was vision and values week.
Amera – On Wednesday we designed our new class charter. We changed it to Disney characters.
It has been a great first week back and all children were ready to learn. We have lots of great things happening in Primary 6 this term and I am looking forward to another excellent term.
Miss McCormack
Happy New Year from all the Nursery team. We are looking forward to lots of exciting adventures and fantastic learning experiences this term in Nursery.
As part of Vision and Values week we took the opportunity to revisit our Nursery Charter with the children. They were all excellent at discussing this with each other and have put it into practice over the past few days. The kindness Elves continue to help us to share and be kind to each other.
We welcomed five new children to our St Ninians family this week. Carter, Zaki and Isla joined the AM children and Lucas and Shea joined the PM children. It was lovely to meet you all and we hope you enjoy your time with us at Nursery. We were super proud of our older children who looked after our new friends so well.
It was also Happy Birthday on Wednesday to Christopher in AM session. He helped make his birthday cake with his friends. It smelt delicious.
Our AM children are sharing their favourite experiences at Nursery this week.
Oliver” I like listening to stories and playing in the house corner.”
Roma and Lucy ” We liked playing in the house corner and making some food for our friends.”
Amelia ” I loved making things with the play dough.”
Isabelle and Abigail ” We loved story time this week and reading stories.”
Blake ” I enjoyed playing with the bricks and working on the smartboard.”
Micah, Seren and Abu Bakr ” We loved being back at Nursery and playing with all our friends.”
As part of our Outdoor Learning we were hoping to make a small Music area and we wondered if you had any old pots, frying pans, small trays or utensils to spare.
Have a lovely weekend.
The Nursery Team.
