Our weekly highlights:
Literacy: we have been building sounds together to make words. We listen to a word, spell it using bricks, copy it down and then draw a picture to show the meaning of the word. Our reading skills are coming on a treat too. We are all working really hard with our tricky words as well. This week we have been working on alternative endings in a story. We listened to a story called ‘Melting Snow’ (from Oxford owl) but we decided we didn’t like the way the story ended so we made up our own endings. Instead of the snowman in the story melting, our snowman went on an adventure. Ask your child what adventure their snowman went on?
Numeracy: This week we have been working on number stories of 6, 7 and 8. We have been finding out how we can make these numbers in different ways. e.g. 5+2=7 and 6+2=8. We are fantastic at doubles now and we can tell you our doubles as quick as a click. This is a great song to help us practise.
Mathematics: Our topics in maths at the moment is measurement, shape and pattern. We have been working on measure, shape and pattern through our ‘play: plan, do review’ sessions. We will be furthering our knowledge on shape more next week.
We are really enjoying practising for our nativity and we can’t wait to show this to you. Please remember to bring in your child’s clothes for the nativity by Monday. We need this for our dress rehersal.
We have been so busy this week that we don’t have much photos! Have a lovely weekend,
Miss Meechan
This week our school took part in a numeracy review and our learners were able to showcase what they have been learning in numeracy. James and Lucy were selected to meet some special visitors and talk about their learning-well done to both of them for speaking so confidently!! On Wednesday Miss Smyth and Mr McDowall, the Depute Headteacher from St Margaret’s visited our classroom and joined in with our number talks lesson and a numeracy carousel. They were really impressed at how well the children could talk about their number work and enjoyed using play dough, the ten frames and the iPads. Everyone was keen to share what they had learned about addition and number stories.
The children were all excited this week when we began learning about Advent. We all went over to our class altar and set up our purple colours and the manger were baby Jesus lay. We all learned that Advent is a time of waiting and preparing. On Thursday we also began opening our Advent calendar to help us count down the days to Christmas.
Looking after ourselves is really important to us and we managed to get outside to do our daily mile. Everyone is managing to run more and walk less! In PE we are getting really skilled at dancing and impressed Mr McCurdy in the Grand Ole Duke of York dance. We are also looking after our teeth and brushing them during the school day.
In literacy we learned our last sound for this term, z. Everyone made their very own z zebra and thought of different words with z in them. Bingo was one of the favourite activities of the week. Our focus for the rest of term will be blending all of the sounds we have learned and spelling. We have been continuing to work on our Frys words and our word wall is looking very busy. Some of us are now using these words in our writing and are looking for them in our reading books.
Here are our class comments this week:
Aliza – In maths we have been learning about simplifying fractions and how you get it to its simplest form. It was a bit tricky but we got the hang of it!!
Erin R – On Wednesday, as part of our Christmas Crafts teacher carousel, we made Christmas decorations for our Christmas tree and it was fun.
Erin O – On Tuesday Aliza and I went to talk to two maths teachers from St. Margaret’s to tell them all about our learning in maths.
Erwin – On Thursday for writing we were describing winter settings to prepare for the writing assessment next week.
Jennifer – On Monday we learnt about spy quest and it was so exciting and tomorrow there is a signing day at the centre.
Kieran – Adding on to Aliza’s we did a numeracy carousel. Stations were Sumdog, Number Talks with Miss McCormack, worksheets, 100 square pictures and HAM games. We also did some of work on our topic plus we learned all about our class trip to Sky studios and an overnight stay at Lowport in Linlithgow in April!
Emma – On Monday a famous writer called David Goucher came in and we learnt about his book Spy Quest and today after school we are having a festive fun afternoon it will be really exiting!!!
Rugare – Miss McCormack got a new novel called The Nowhere Emporium, it’s a cool story!
The week all pupils were given letters about our class visit to Sky Skills Studio. This will take place on Tuesday 13th December. Sky sent over consent forms and photo consent forms so please make sure these are returned to school.
The children were also given some very exciting news about a P6 trip to Lowport centre, Linlithgow! This will be an overnight stay in April. Some children had a lot of questions about this, if you would like to know anything else just ask.
Miss McCormack
P.S – Our popcorn challenge total is now 680!! – Well Done!
This week we have focused on Science report writing. We used our investigation about conductors and insulators to write our report. We learned terms such as hypothesis, apparatus and results. Hopefully the next time we complete a science investigation we can write the report as we work.
In maths, we have been working with percentages. We used our number talks strategies to help us work out how much more is needed on a download percentage bar to reach 100%. This was great fun. The P6 children also played a game where they had to convert from a decimal number to a percentage to reach the other end of the board. To help us with all of this learning we used the following site. Have a go yourself with this site and blog a reply as to how you got on.
http://www.visnos.com/demos/percentage-fraction-decimals-grid
P7 children extended their learning by finding a way of converting a fraction (which did not have 100 as the denominator) into a percentage…great team work was on display. I would say everyone gave 100% effort to their maths learning this week!
We had two special events this week, St Andrew’s Day and the start of Advent. Miss Smyth helped us with our learning about St Andrew and we have been listening to traditional Scots vocabulary through the story “The Eejits” which is a retelling of the story “The Twits” by Roald Dahl, Miss Smyth had everyone laughing with her amazing scottish pronunciations!
Everyone is very excited about the countdown now, but we took sometime to think about the true meaning of Christmas and we have started to engage with our Gospel passages about the birth of Christ. We completed some wordls in our journals to represent all the important words and messages that we can use in our prayers during advent.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Currie
We are all exhausted after a busy week full of hard work and fun in P4.
We are improving every week during our Ceilidh dancing and Mr McCurdy has been blown away by our efforts. He is amazed at how quickly we pick up the dances and has even taught us dances that he would usually only teach to P7!!!!
In Maths, we have been learning about money and making total amounts. Some of our favourite activities have been making a shopping list within a budget to work out what we could buy for children in Africa, using the money loop cards and timing ourselves to try and improve each time and solving money word problems. We had visitors to our school who joined us during our money lesson and Mr Conway was very impressed with our focus, concentration and the ability to share our number strategies.
We wrote a story about ‘The Night Before Christmas’ this week for our writing assessment. We included everything we have been learning about so far, including adjectives, similes, description of the setting and onomatopoeia.
As part of our science topic, we have been learning about forces. We went on a magnetic object hunt in the classroom and in the garden and had to make predictions to decide whether we thought it would be magnetic or not. Some of us were very surprised with our findings.
Have a great Weekend, P4 and Miss Diamond.
This week we have been learning how to measure in centimeters with a ruler.
Zoe- You have to make sure the zero is placed at the beginning of the object you are measuring then you read the number which is at the end of the object you are measuring.
We understand that Centimetres are marked on a ruler as CM and we have been writing this when recording our measurements.
Here are a couple of photos we took of each other measuring with the iPads.
Our aim this week in writing was to use adjectives to describe the Train Conductor. We have thought of lots of interesting describing words for his appearance and his character.
To help us practise our spelling words we have been making them from playdoh.
Through our topic, we have explored how Polar Bears stay warm, we completed a Science experiment to find out more.
Our experiment involved us putting our hands into a bowl of water full of ice cubes.
One of our hands had a special glove with oil in it which acted as the blubber.
We had to write down our predictions and our results.
The result of our experiment was that our hand in the oil was warmer than our other hand. This helped us to understand how the Polar bears blubber keeps it warm. We also watched a video clip which explained this further.
In class, we have been practising singing jingle bells and this week we went along to record our song. This was a super experience and we loved all singing together into the microphones. Miss Boyes said she loved listening to us sing as our voices were amazing.
We have been singing lots this week as we have been practising for our nativity show. We love all of the songs and we are learning to all sing at the same time and with good volume.
Our Scottish Country dancing is looking great in PE, this week we practised the Virginia Reel. Here we are showing off our dance moves.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!
Another fun week in Primary 6!
We started our week by visiting the library where we all took out a book to read in class. We were given a special class library card allowing us to keep the books for a little bit longer. We also recorded our song for the school Christmas CD. It was very professional and all pupils were excellent! We are now recording artists!
We’ve been building on our renewable and non renewable energy knowledge this week. We completed a group task involving lots of problem solving to work out the advantages and disadvantages of different energy sources. We then focused on wind energy and created paintings of wind farms and poems all about the wind.
Here are some comments from the pupils this week:
Edwin – This week we have been writing a wind poem for our topic which is energy sources.
Erwin – This week we have been recording our Christmas song [Rockin’ around the Christmas tree].
Erin Roy – On Tuesday we went to the library, the lady read us a story, she told us a bit about the library then we got to choose a book!
Emily- This week some of the girls went to a gymnastics competition and some got a medal!
Emma-This week we painted some wind pictures and they look Amazing! We also went to the library and we chose a book to bring back to school, it was really fun! Our writing this week was about a wind poem!! THEY LOOK AMAZING! So this week was really fun and creative!
Congratulations to all the pupils who took part in the gymnastics festival, I’ve heard you were all fantastic!!
Next week the pupils will be given some research homework about renewable energy – have a think about what you already know.
Enjoy your weekend!
Good afternoon everyone.
It has been another fun packed week in P7/6.
Our Science topic this week was really rocking! We learned all about the structure of the Earth and spent sometime drawing and labelling diagrams which show the inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. From here we became geologists and learned about different types of rocks, igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. It was great to get a chance to touch and hold all these rock samples and not just use pictures. We were even then able to identify rocks from their colour and texture! The rock and roll lifestyle of a P7/6!
In Maths we have continued working with decimal numbers and improved our ability to mentally add and subtract decimal numbers. We also consolidated our knowledge of multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000. This formed part of our Maths glass wall learning.
For our writing we completed our series of lessons on “Cool To Be Kind” and we completed diary entries from a refugee’s point of view. We used emotional language to convey feelings and the finished result was some very powerful pieces. These have formed a display in our classroom.
Well done P7/6. have a lovely weekend
Mrs Currie
We had a wonderful wintery week in P4!
We have introduced money in maths this week where we have been looking at using the ‘£’ and ‘p’ sign. We are looking forward to learning more about amounts, values and change.
In PE we have been enjoying learning our Scottish Dancing. We now know 6 dances and are ready to Ceilidh dance at New Year!
In story writing, we were using adjectives and similes to create a winter setting. Hannah described the trees as being ‘once emerald green and now tall and bare.’ Ailie used a simile to describe the snow as being ‘like a soft, white marshmallow.’ Adrin used his senses to help create the setting ‘when he stepped outside, he heard the grass crunching beneath his feet.’ Joseph blew everyones socks off with his excellent writing this week!
In art, we have been exploring shade and tone using paint, charcoal, tissue paper and pencils. We experimented with the colours on our tone sheet and will continue to develop these skills in our next art lesson. Keep your eyes peeled!
In topic, we made our very own circuits. We had to use a battery, a switch, a light bulb and multiple wires. We had a discussion about what materials would work as a conductor and complete the circuit.
We got right into the festive spirit when we made a very ‘professional’ recording of our Christmas song ‘That First Christmas Day’. Our debut single will be released on Friday 2nd Dec at our school Christmas fayre. This should not be missed!
Have a good weekend :)!
