Numeracy this week:
We have started back up our subtraction learning this week. We will continue with this until the Easter holidays. Miss Meechan has been so impressed with how much we have remembered about subtraction after having a break from this concept for a few weeks. We took part in different games and activities to help us with our skills. One of the tasks we participated in this week was to decide which our favourite way to do subtraction sums is. We used cubes, drew pictures and crossed out objects, used our fingers or used a number line. What was your favourite way to do subtraction sums?
Literacy this week:
This week we learned a really tricky sound. The ‘th’ sound. We found this really tricky at the start of the week but by Wednesday we were spelling lots of words which used the ‘th’ sound. Jakub and Casper were spelling ‘cloth’. Kyle is spelling ‘that’ and Jarred is spelling ‘throne’. WOW! Well done everyone.
We also visited the library this week. When we were at the library we returned the books we had borrowed from our last visit. The lady at the library was teaching us about fiction and non-fiction books. We found out where the non-fiction books are kept in the library, some of us even decided to take a non-fiction book back to school with us. We even stopped off for a play at the park on our way back to school since we were all so well behaved.
Cooperative learning:
This week, Mrs Purdie set us a challenge to think about ways we show cooperative learning. We were talking about these big words and decided that it meant about ‘teamwork’. Teamwork is one of our values which we all show very well every day at school. Here are some pictures of our cooperative learning this week. Kerr, Kayla and Rutendo were learning about money together by playing in our sweet shop. The boys and girls in the lions reading group are showing how well they work together during reading time. These pictures show us using our higher order thinking skills by answering blooms buttons questions with a partner.
Have a lovely weekend,
Miss Meechan and P1M
Another busy week in P1R.
In phonics we met a rude clown who taught us about the ‘Th’ sounds, Mrs Roy made us all stick our tongues out when practising this sound, have a go at home. We played a cool game on the smartboard which revised sh, ch and th where we had to fill the rocket tank with fuel. The game was called Letter Planet and it is on the Topmarks website if you want to play it again. We also made th books and practised spelling th words using magnetic letters.
Subtraction was the focus in numeracy this week and we learned more about mathematical language, did you know there are different words that mean the same as subtraction? We enjoyed playing the Lego subtraction board game with a partner to help us in our numeracy learning and also made subtraction ice cream cones. We also went on a visit to the local shop to finish off our money topic. Everyone had 20p to spend and had to look at the price labels before making our choices. Klaudia and Isla had a great idea to team up and put their money together as they saw something which was 30p, well done girls, good problem solving and teamwork! Nathan found it tricky choosing as there were so many things he liked. Dexter was able to buy 4 things with his 20p, he added the prices together to make 20p.
In RE we were looking after the new life we had planted and we were delighted to see how our seeds had grown. We’ve taken them home now to show our families. We decided to make our Lenten promises and came up with some lovely ideas – Ephraim will help look after his little brother, Brooke will give to the poor, as a class we decided to say an extra prayer every day in school. We also learned about St Patrick while listening to some traditional Irish music – Mrs Docherty visited us to show us her Irish dancing!!
Our pirate adventures continued this week and we all made pirate masks to use in some role-play activities. Isla enjoyed taking videos and pictures as we acted out our pirate adventures. We also wrote stories about being marooned on a desert island which we are going to submit to the Young Writer’s competition. There were some great imaginative ideas and a selection of WOW words.
This week our classroom has received a make over! Our colour scheme is purple and grey and it has created a lovely learning environment for us.
As part of our ongoing topic of WW2 we have been looking at propaganda posters and the slogans that were used. We discussed how these posters were designed to be persuasive and to project certain images to the reader. We then focused on four of the most iconic slogans and created our own posters by either being inspired by posters from the time or by creating our own. Here are a few examples,
In our Numeracy learning this week we have focused on transferring and manipulating our knowledge of numbers and the number processes to tackle a mixture of mental maths questions, word problems and problem solving tasks. Here is an example of a problem solving question, if you can work out the solution draw it out and take a photograph of it and Dojo it (extra dojo points available!).
For our Health and Wellbeing learning this week PC Cochran visited our classroom and gave us a talk on “Choices”. We were able to listen to and participate in discussions about making good choices and consequences for those who do not make good choices. He also shared with us an insight into life as a Police Officer and showed us his protective clothing and equipment. What a great experience it was for all.
In PE we have been learning new games and team games and developing our ability to follow rules and create/adapt rules to suit our own needs. Below is a clip of the rules for Mushroom Ball which is proving to be a popular warm-up game.
Next week we will begin to deliver our class topics about WWII. It will be really interesting to see the different aspects of the war which people have chosen to research. A reminder about some of the Green For Growth comments that were given after last terms talks, these will help you focus on ensuring that you deliver and present your information well,
Enjoy your weekend.
This week has been pretty exciting. We were out of class for 2 days whilst our classroom was getting painted. It’s now fresh, bright and looks great! It was very exciting coming in this morning and seeing what a difference the bright colour has made to our classroom.
Whilst out of the classroom for 2 days we used the space in the dinner hall to help us with our science. This week we focused on the Solar System and Sound Waves. We focused on the size of the solar system and used lots of previous learning in maths to help us map out the solar system to scale. We even managed to do this in the playground! Also, we used our knowledge of drawing circles to draw all the planets to scale, this was a tricky task as some had to be drawn very small, whilst some were too big to draw with a compass. The class worked excellently in their groups and produced fantastic work.
Here are our comments and photographs this week:
Erwin – this week we been talking about the solar system for science in class and it was fun!
Jennifer-this week our classroom got painted lilac and we got to work in the hall I think it’s good working in the hall because we had more space we were put in groups to work in and learned about the solar system, sound waves and animals. We have also been taking part in a daily lent challenge.
Kieran- This week we done science which included things about the solar system and sound waves the top is called the peek the bottom is the trough. We were in the lunch hall instead of our classroom as it was being painted. We went outside and drew planets they were Mercury , Venus, Earth, Mars, Uranus and Neptune the dwarf planets are Pluto and Eris.
Aliza- This week we all gave in our buddy applications and soon we are going to be buddies!! On Wednesday and Thursday we had to sit in the lunch hall because our classroom was being painted purple. We have been learning about the solar system this week and we learnt lots of information about all the different planets!
Emma-This week we had to hand in our buddy applications and on Wednesday and Thursday we got moved to the lunch hall in the lunch hall we learned about: The solar system, Sound waves and Animal communication. IT WAS AWESOMEEEEEE!!!!
Emily- this week we were working in the hall because our class room was getting painted. We were learning about the solar system. and got to meet our new deputy head teacher.
Amera-this week p6 were in the dinner hall because our classroom was getting painted. And we had to hand in our buddy application to try to get a buddy and if the teachers in the nursery liked the application we would get a buddy!!
This week, we have been very creative.
This week for topic we have been learning about Viking food. We made oatcakes using: porridge oats, melted butter, honey and apricots. Mark said “They tasted absolutely delicious”.
We have also been making presentations, using posters and Power Points. Ailie said “I liked doing it because we could show our work in front of the class.”
This week in maths we have been learning about Geometry. We have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes. Ryan B said “It has been enjoyable.” Adrin said “I want to learn more shapes. We know these new shapes: Tetrahedron, Triangular Prism, Hexagonal Prism, Pentagon, and a Sphere. We also had fun creating shape nets, in the shape of household objects.
We have been creating imaginative writing pieces about Viking sagas. This week we created a new story that had ourselves as a character, as well as our favourite Viking gods. “I thought it was a fun way to write because anything can happen.” Hannah
This week in PE we had a mini football world cup. Haseeb told us “we got to make our own team and the colour was the flag our bibs were the same as the different countries.” We have put in a lot of effort with our football skills and Camryn thinks “we might be saying goodbye to rounders for this week.”
This week we have also started our preparation to make our Holy Communion, and will continue on our faith journey next week.
Stay tuned for next weeks P4 news! Have a lovely weekend.
Miss Diamond and Primary 4 would like to wish Miss Crookston the best of luck for her future career as a teacher! She has been a privilege to work with and we certainly will miss her!
What a busy week it has been in Primary 2/3!!
One of the highlights of our week has been the West Lothian Sumdog Challenge. Everyone has worked so hard to achieve a great score. We’ve been working at home, working in school and even had to set up a relay team in class. We were delighted to achieve 34th place out of 211 classes.
The children would also like to share some more highlights:
Oma – I liked our maths carousel because we get to self-assess our work and this helps me learn.
Harry – I liked doing PE because we were working on tennis skills.
Maya Kasia and Annayah – I liked Sumdog because you can play games at the same time as you learn.
Michelle and Dominic – I liked working on ‘green for growth’ because it helps me learn.
Maeve – I liked researching the history of the Egyptian Pharaohs. We used Google to help our research.
Brooke and Andrew – I liked watching the P3 assembly today.
Kuba and Pawel – I liked the literacy carousel because I worked on handwriting, spelling, reflective reading and guided reading.
Levente – I liked working on writing subtraction sums and subtracting tens and units. It was hard at first but it got easier.
Chloe – I liked spelling today because it helps me learn words to use in my story writing on Thursdays.
Alishba – I liked handwriting because it helps me join letters and I get better and better.
Carly – I liked when we wrote about our friends in Big Writing.
Angel – I liked my learning conversation because we talked about my learning and mummies and pyramids.
What a great start to the week we had! We went on our school trip to Purves Puppets in Biggar.
Julia-“The show was called Pips and Panda meet the three bears.”
The show was amazing because the puppets glowed in the dark. We had to blow out special lights in the theatre for the room to go dark.
Maja- “When we blew the lights out the stars begun to glow above us on the ceiling.”
The two main characters were called Pips and Panda and we got to hear the story of Golidlocks and the 3 bears.
This linked perfectly with our new Fairyland topic.
Madison-“My favourite part was when Panda flew away with the kite because I liked Panda the Puppet.”
Wojciech- “I liked the part when Panda and Pips got stuck in the swing because they kept bumping in to each other.”
Ava- “My favourite part was when the Hawaiian frogs were dancing.”
Leo- “My favourite character was Pips because he is a cheeky monkey and I think I am a cheeky monkey too.”
Lilly- “I liked when the rabbit was eating Panda’s apple. I also liked when the Rabbit put tomato sauce on Pip, it was so funny.”
Poppy- “I liked it when Pips fell off of the swing.”
Elenta- “My favourite part was when Panda got stuck in the tree.”
After the show we all got to meet the puppets and we got a photo with them. Here is our photo with the puppets.
Once we had our lunch the puppeteer came to talk to us about the history of puppets and he showed us special paintings on the wall.
The Puppeteer told us about shadow puppets, finger puppets, string puppets, glove puppets and rod puppets. Here are the photos showing the history of puppets. I’m sure we could tell you all about it at home.
To follow on from this back in class we investigated different types of puppets and how they are made. We drew a picture of our class puppet (Paolo) and we thought about the materials he is made from and all of his different parts. Then we designed our own puppets which we will make next week.
On Tuesday we completed a short read task for the story of Golidlocks and the Three Bears.
Ana-“We had to read the text and then fill in the missing words.”
For money this week we continued to learn about money equivalences. We had to find two different ways of making an amount with the coins.
We are finding this easier now and we are getting very good at identifying the best coins to use instead of using lots of 1 pences.
We’ve also been using Sumdog this week to practise developing our skills in numeracy and maths. We love using Sumdog because it’s a fun way to learn numbers.
We have been counting in 2’s 5’s and 10’s and we love singing along to the Counting Robot Song.
In writing this week we wrote a recount of our school trip and our challenge was to use different openers.
Miss Boyes was super impressed with all of the different openers that we included in our writing. Here are examples from our star writers.
In PE this week we have been learning how to play a new game.
Wojciech- “There are 2 teams in the game. One of the teams has to kick the ball out onto the court.”
Filip- “The other team has to catch the ball and then bounce it off the other teams legs or feet.”
Ava- “Your not allowed to run with the ball or you are out.”
Zoe-“The team the kicks the ball has to try to get back to their section of the hall without being hit.”
This game involved lots of teams work and you had to follow the rules carefully.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!
