Nursery News

This week was Stay and Play at Nursery. The boys and girls were very excited to share their learning adventures with their families. They were so confident at showing them round all the areas of the nursery and were then  able to join in with their learning. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along to these sessions and hope that you all enjoyed your time with us. We look forward to welcoming some more visitors to our Come back and Play sessions which are next week.

We have been discussing and looking for signs of Spring in our learning and to help us with this we had some new additions to our nursery family. It was some caterpillars! We talked about how they grow and we noticed their special food in their tubs. We learned the special name for the home they make for themselves before they turn into butterflies. We also read the story of  The very  hungry caterpillar. We now have our caterpillars on display with an information board which explains how they grow. We are all super excited to watch the changes over the next few weeks and be able to talk about them. Please have a little look at them the next time you are in the nursery.

We have also been very busy this week making invitations for our Grandparents day which is on Thursday 30th March at 10am and 2pm.  These will be making their way home next week. We would appreciate it if you could give us an idea of how many will be coming along to this event for catering purposes and also would be grateful for any donations of cakes or biscuits nearer the time.

Our numeracy and literacy skills have been developing too this week as at small group time we have been counting up to 10 and recognising our names. This has been developed further by the children having the opportunity to find their name at the gluing table and putting it on their work and also at the drawing/ writing table where they can try and find their name and practise writing it. What super workers we have.

Our pre school children were given a letter this week with our transition calendar. We will also be issuing a transition booklet soon which further explains some of our planned activities. This is an exciting time for the children who are getting ready to go to school in August . If you have any questions about any of the activities please ask any member of the nursery team who will be more than happy to help you.

We are trying to move towards a cashless nursery and in order to achieve this we would encourage you to pay your child’s snack money on the online payment of iPay impact. This will also be of benefit when your child goes to school as this system is also used there.

Have a lovely weekend.

The Nursery team.

P7/6 News

This week we have completed our block of work on data handling.  Our final focus was to look at pie charts and to use our prior learning about fractions and percentages to help us with our learning.  All though this will not be our focus during our maths lessons in the next few weeks we have definitely learned some great skills for life in how to record data and create a graph, we are looking forward to seeing all the maths homework due in next week to see this learning in action.

In literacy we looked at Performance Poetry and how we can read poetry with intonation, expression and at different speeds to create effect.  We were inspired by the poem The Sound Collector to use onomatopoeia within our work.  Here is the poet Roger McCough reading his poem

http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zc6qxnb

Using the context of The Blitz as part of our WW2 project we have started to create our own poetry.  We have all made a start and will continue this into next week.  A special mention to Aurora, she has already created a fabulous first draft and we will share this next week on the blog.

Mrs Docherty worked with the class on Wednesday of this week and we all learned about Democracy.  We used the starting point of our topic WW2 and understood what the difference between democracy and dictatorship is.  From here we discussed and worked on learning about democracy in relevant terms today and how it impacts our life.  We have all recognised how much of a voice we have in our school and then compared this to other countries today where there is not democracy in action.  This has helped us deepen our understanding of the importance of the UN Convention For The Rights Of The Child.

We are nearing the end of our swimming block.  Today in the pool there was some outstanding work and perseverance skills on display.  Well done to Moiz who is making super progress with his confidence in the water.  Freya continues to use her super swimming skills to be a role model for others through demonstrations and  Jack’s back crawl has made significant improvement.  Everyone has been now been given the opportunity to explore the fun side of swimming through using floats, flippers and water polo balls.  Great fun!

Next week we will be working for some of the week in The Hub as our classroom is being painted.  We will share photographs of our refreshed learning environment next week.

Have a lovely weekend.

Learning through letters in Primary 2!

Our blog name was created by Marcus this week with a little support from Miss Boyes.

Julia- “In money this week we had to show Miss Boyes how you could use the coins in 2 different ways to find the total amount.”

Marcus- “If the amount was 57p you would have to show 2 ways to make 57 pence.”

Vanessa-“You could use 50p, 5p and 2p.”

Wojciech- “Or you could use 20p, 10p, 10p, 10p and 2p 2p, 2p, 1p”

Also this week we have been learning about odd and even numbers. Miss Boyes let us listen to the story of Odd Todd and Even Steven.

We also learned special rhymes to remember the odd and even numbers.

Aaron- “The rhyme for even numbers is “0, 2, 4, 6, 8 even numbers are great!”

Angelina-“The rhyme for odd numbers is “1, 3, 5, 7, 9 I love odd numbers all the time.”

Miss Boyes explained the difference between odd and even by showing us gloves. We had to lay out the gloves every time each set had a match it landed on an even number. If one did not have a match that would make an odd number.

We played fun games on the netbooks to help us with our learning.

http://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/number/oddandeven/

We had to sort the numbers into the correct category at our independent station.

Leo- “When I was at this station I kept repeating the rhymes in my head to help me find where each number had to go.”

Do you remember when we told you that we had sent a letter to Muck Primary school? This week we received their letters in return. We were super excited to read all of their letters. There are only 8 children in Muck Primary School so it didn’t take us too long to read the letter. They told us all about life on the island and it sounds great! They also asked more questions so we wrote them a letter.

Here we are with their letters.

Angelina- This week “we had a magical post box arrive outside our classroom.”

Leo-“The mouse left us a message to tell us to go outside and look in the post box.”

We all went out and opened it together. Inside there was a special letter from the Dragon.

The letter asked us to help the Dragon save Fairyland. He has been to our classroom and thinks it would make a fantastic Fairyland. To make sure we understood the letter Miss Boyes gave us different parts of it and we had to cut them out and stick the text in order.

We are really looking forward to our school trip on Monday and will keep you updated on our new Fairyland topic.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 2!

P1M Weekly News

P1M have been working very hard this week.

Our sounds for this week are ‘ng’ and ‘wh’. Could you find the jolly phonics jingles for the ng sound on YouTube? We have been working very hard on our spelling this week. Kayla was able to spell the word strong. Well done Kayla! We also really enjoyed our finding words task. We needed to use a magnifying glass to look for words hidden in a mini beast garden.

We have been learning more about number names. We found this really tricky at the start of the week but we are now super stars at Reading number names. Miss Meechan has updated our sumdog accounts with new skills. We are excited to participate in a West lothian sumdog challenge next week. You can login at home and get some more practise in!

This week we were given a new ‘just play?’ session based on numeracy. Ask your child what they chose to do this week? What has been your favourite so far?

Have you heard about our visit to the shop? Miss Meechan gave everyone 50p to spend at the shop. We had to check out the price tags in the shop to make sure we had enough money to pay for the item.  What did you buy? When we got back to school we hado to write a story about what we decided to buy at the shop. We were all on our best behaviour in the shop and the shopkeeper left us a lovely message on Facebook. Thank you for letting us visit your shop.

Today we were talking about the changes we can see around us which show us signs of spring. We went out into the garden and took pictures of the signs or spring we could fine. We then showed our photos to the other groups.

Wow! That really was a busy week.

Enjoy a well earned rest this weekend.

Miss Meechan and P1M

Signs of spring

This week we have been continuing to look for signs of Spring or new life during our RE lessons. Many children have spotted some new flowers growing near our school or in their gardens. We decided to do some planting of our own in the classroom. We made lots of links in our learning when doing this:

RE – new life, Lent, preparing

Science – growing seeds, what will we need, what are the best conditions for growing things, seasons, weather

Literacy – sequencing, writing instructions

Numeracy – counting seeds, measuring soil

In phonics we learned about ‘ng’ and ‘wh’, we all agreed that they were quite tricky. Ephraim has been great at spotting ‘ng’ throughout the week in reading books or on the smartboard – well done Ephraim. We tried a new activity at our choice station this week – the ‘wh word hunt’ – we had to use magnifying glasses to spot the tiny wh words hiding in a colourful picture, it was good fun. We have also been using magnetic letters, playdough and written tasks to help us learn these new sounds. Another station was the peer assessment station, one of us read the words and the other person had to spell the words on the whiteboards, we loved taking it in turns to be the teacher! Next week we are moving onto the rude clown sound -Th.

In numeracy we worked on number names to 10 as this was something we chose as a next step after learning about money. We played games to help us do this, eg. Matching names to numbers, spelling number names games on the spelling bug app, number name wordsearches. We are all more confident now in reading number names and are ready to move onto something new next week. Remember to log onto Sumdog to take part in the West Lothian Contest this week. We will also make time at school next week during Smartstart and numeracy to do it too.

In IDL we learned about mapping and made our very own treasure maps for our pirate adventures. We discussed what you would find on a map: symbols, a key, a compass, a route. This will help us during Outdoor Learning Week where we will have a go at following some maps outside.

Pupil voice:

Dexter- I liked playing the sky phonics app on the iPads.

Klaudia-In PE we were playing hockey.

James-I enjoyed learning about Lent.

Amber- I liked learning about subtraction.

Isla- We made a treasure map.

Brooke- I liked our RE work this week.

Ephraim- I liked learning about number names.

Mark- We were planting seeds.

Primary 6 News!

What a fantastic week in Primary 6!

Pupils who are interested in becoming buddies next year have all been given an application form.  The forms handed back so far have been fantastic! It’s great to see how our school values shine through our pupils.  All buddy applications should be handed in before Friday 17th March.

Here are our comments for this week:

Neave – on Thursday in P.E our amazing teacher showed us how to flip half way round and come back again on the ropes. We were also doing sit-ups, push-ups and dips on the bench.

Jennifer – at P.E we went on the ropes. I love the ropes, we did half flips and Miss McCormack is amazing at them she was the best

Emma – This week in P.E we had hockey on Tuesday and on Thursday Miss McCormack showed us how to go upside down on the ropes it was awesome! And on Thursday we learned about bossy verbs. I’m really excited today because we’re having a football tournament!!

Rugare – I participated in a fun netball tournament.

Aliza – this week we handed in our buddy form and most of us might become buddies!  So exciting!

Kieran – on Wednesday we did cameo pictures, which are Victorian photographs with Mrs young. We used photographs and black and coloured paper.

Edwin – on Thursday we wrote instructions on how to get ready for school and it was fun.

The Victorian Silhouettes look fantastic! Great work! Hopefully we can get them up on display after our classroom has been painted. It’s great to hear that so many of you enjoyed PE this week.  We will continue to build our skills on the ropes.

Finally, a big Thank You and Well Done to those who have been completing the Lenten Challenges.  Mrs Purdie has been posting these everyday, keep trying on the lead up to Easter!

This week has been: amazingly fun and tiring for P4!

For our topic we have been learning about Viking Gods and we have shared all of the facts that we have learned during our show and tell. We learned that the last Viking battle in Scotland was in October, 1263. We learned this from Neve and Aoife who they shared their exciting experience of a trip to Vikingar in Largs with us.

Hannah enjoyed learning about the Viking Gods and particularly liked Freya. She is the God of love, beauty, fertility, and war.

Ailie enjoyed learning about Frey, who was the god of wind, water, sun, and harvest. He is also the brother of Freya.

We have enjoyed writing about the Vikings during story writing this week too. We have been writing our own Viking sagas, which Mark enjoyed because we were allowed to use our favourite Gods, or make one up using our imagination to be the characters in the Saga’s.

Haseeb enjoyed learning a new topic in maths. We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes and thinking about their lines of symmetry.  Jacob enjoyed exploring the different objects and identifying the names of the shapes. Aleksander enjoyed going on a shape hunt, looking for the shapes that match each description.

We really enjoyed PE this week! Charlie particularly liked football. We have been developing our balls skills and focussing hard on team work. We learned how to dribble. It is not as easy at it looks!

Jacob particularly liked working with his team mates during rounders and Haseeb thinks “ROUNDERS IS SO FUN!”

Finally, Evie enjoyed RE because we were thinking about the difference between wants and needs. We drew around someone in our group and stuck things that we need inside or body and things that we want on the outside. This helped us to decide what things to give up for our Lenten promises.

Have a lovely weekend and keep updated by following our blog, from Primary 4 and Miss Crookston.
