P2 News

Another busy week in P2.

This week was Inspirational Maths week.  One of the inspirational lessons we completed was “Piano Fingers”.  For this we numbered our fingers and then had to use the correct finger to press the numbered piano keys.  This inspired us to think about how we use our fingers to help us count.  When we count with our fingers we do not always just count in ones.  Sometimes we make each finger worth ten and count up to 100.  We use little tunes to help us do this, ask us to show you.

Here is a picture of us all trying to find different ways to make five with our fingers, the challenge was to try not have the same combination of fingers as the person next to us!

In our writing we have been focusing on using connective (joining words) in our sentences.  The two connectives we have discussed are “and” and “because”.  We learned a little story to help us learn how to spell “because”,

b-illy

e-ats

c-arrots

a-nd

u-sually

s-ome

e-ggs

This week we also had our special feast day Mass to celebrate St. Ninian.  We learned the story of St Ninian and how he grew up and travelled from Scotland to Rome to become a Bishop.  We even had an extra long playtime as a treat!  Luckily it was dry!

For handwriting we have focused on learning how letters can join using lead in lines and flicks.  We have practised l, i, t, c, o and a.  From these letters we now know how to join our writing for the word “cat” and “cot”.  As a challenge, what other small words can you make using these letters and try to join them up when you write them.  Good luck!

This week has been maths week and it has brought lots of excitement. It has been more fun than we thought!

There is nation-wide Sumdog challenge and our class has not done great but we have put on our growth mind-sets and tried our best for the day remaining.

We also tried going outside and looking for maths in nature and buildings using the AAL to take pictures and put them in a collage. Here are a few of the collages!

We are on our rugby block for P.E and we were doing team drills where we ran in a line and passed the ball between each other. Miss McCormack gave us a fitness challenge on Wednesday and we all succeeded but it was tough.

P4/5 Weekly News!

This has been a very inspirational week. We worked hard on different maths and numeracy activities and enjoyed sharing these with some of our parents at Ninian’s Natter. The highlight for most of us was baking cupcakes. We were focussing on reading scales and weighing out the correct amount of ingredients.

Another activity that we enjoyed was getting the chance to play one another’s home-made maths games. We had board games, online games,  physical games and quizzes.

We have had lots of opportunities to work in groups this week. One of the challenges was to make numbers 1-20 by only using the number 4 and the four processes. This was tricky!

We loved being part of the Sumdog competition set up for Inspirational Maths week.

We have taken a new approach to the daily mile which has proved to be a huge success so far. We now have to complete as many laps as possible and record the distance in miles ran as a class.

Hannah – ‘I liked creating a diamond in art using grid references.’

Emily – ‘I liked designing my own cupcake.’

Maliha – ‘I liked using number maps to share different strategies.’

Evie – ‘I liked completing the numbers to 20 challenge only using ‘4’.

Aoife – ‘I enjoyed improving my daily mile.’

Alekander + Aaron – ‘I liked making the icing to use on my cupcake.’

Mark – ‘I liked getting to eat my own cake that I made.’

Congratulations to this week’s lead learnes, Kasia and Kacper.

Have a good weekend, P4/5 and Miss Diamond :).

P2 News

This week in P2 we had our first set of Lead Learners.

Well done both Kerr and Sophie, they definitely lead by example by working hard and displaying super manners and attitude in class.

To follow on from our book study (which focused on the South Pole) we have decided to follow up with the theme of Hot and Cold Climates.  While we were discussing this new topic we had a lot of amazing ideas to learn about,

Ephriam – “Deserts”

Lucy – “Egypt people”

In numeracy we have been looking at numbers before, after and between within 100.  We have used our class technology to help us with this

We also have been finding out more about partitioning of numbers and using concrete material to show this,

We also had an interesting homework task which asked us to sort emojis and then challenge ourselves to find things in the house to sort.  A lot of us used class dojo to send Mrs Currie our photographs, she was super impressed with our hard work and amazing ideas for sorting into different categories using set criteria.  Kayla even brought in a sorting box to class and some of us helped her sort her items out.

Next week will be very exciting as it is Inspirational Maths Week!  So look out for more amazing Maths news next week!

Nursery News!

This week has seen the beginning of our Outdoor Learning days! What a day it was 🙂 the AM and PM groups enjoyed a woodland walk to the Mid Calder woods, across the bridge. We discussed many things before, during and after our walk. Some of these included safety when out and about;  we seen broken glass and dogs mess and discussed how to keep ourselves safe from these hazards. We talked about when it is ok to run and when we need to stop (when Mrs Conway, or another adult, shouts STOP!). When we got to the woods we learned about ‘jaggy’ nettles and dock leaves – we even had two ‘nurses’ on the PM walk who took charge of the magic leaves incase anyone needed them. We all collected some interesting things and brought them back to nursery, including sticks, stones, leaves and acorns.

We are looking for a catchy name for our outdoor learning days – feel free to add one to our facebook post, or tell the nursery staff any ideas you have!

Mrs Caskie has been busy this week setting up our ‘Big Bedtime Read’ initiative. We are hoping to increase parental engagement and give children great literacy experiences through this initiative, where each child will receive a book pack with five stories each week. As part of our Pupil Equity Funding we hope to achieve 80% of our children to be sharing bedtime stories with their families on four nights of the week or more. You will see our lovely ‘bedtime’ area created in the nursery – letters went out today to outline the plans for this and we look forward to launching it at the beginning of October.

Next week is ‘MATHS WEEK SCOTLAND’ – the boys and girls have enjoyed exploring the talking tub which was full of interesting maths resources, their views and ideas have been taken into account and will be used to plan learning for next week. Please come along to stay and play, or come back and play next week – sign up sheets in the nursery!

PEEP classes begin on 22nd September – Mrs Beattie is hoping to meet some of our PM parents this week to encourage their attendance at these classes 🙂 a fantastic way for kids and parents to bond!

Ninian’s Natter is on Thursday 6-7pm – please do come along! Nursery staff will be on hand to chat all things nursery and have you joining in with maths week activities 🙂 kids and parents welcome!

P1B weekly blog

It’s been another busy week for Primary 1B.

In phonics we have been learning 2 new sounds the ‘s’ sound and the ‘p’ sound.

Hannah- The ‘s’ sound is blue because You feel s’ at the tip of your tongue.
The tip sound is blue because we have two blue veins under our tongue.

This is a stretchy sound which you will feel sizzling at the tip of your tongue.

This song really helped us this week with the ‘s’ sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybiJTZNLvTI
The next sound we learned was the ‘p’ sound.
Micah- “It is a lip sound”
and
Alasdair – “It is a quiet sound.”

Abigail- “The quiet, lip sounds are pink.

You can feel your lips quietly popping when you say the ‘p’ sound.

Why not practise this song at home to help you with the P sound.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJlPKm1Hbl8

On the smart board Miss Boyes showed us a picture of different objects we had to tell her if it started with a S or a P and then we had to tell Miss Boyes which part of our mouth made this sound. We checked if we were correct.

We sorted the objects that began with ‘s’ into the blue tray and the objects that began with ‘p’ into the pink tray.

Also in literacy we have been writing simple descriptions for our dinosaurs, we began by drawing a picture of a dinosaur and then we spoke about how our dinosaur looked with our friends.

Cooper- “My dinosaur has horns.”
Abu bakr- “My dinosaur has stripes.”
Annabelle- “My dinosaur is green with spots.”

For our short read we  have made a front cover for Harry and the dinosaurs. We were learning the title, author and illustrator.

We tried to use the sounds which we know so far in our writing and when we can hear a sound but we aren’t sure what it is we draw a squiggly line.

In numeracy this week we have been learning the numbers 7, 8 and 9.

Why not play this game at home. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/underwater-counting

We have been using the rhymes to help us remember our number formation.

Thea- 7- “Across the sky and down from heaven, now I’ve made the number seven.”

Yasmin 8 – “Around the gate, around the gate. Now I’ve made the number 8.”
Riley 9- “Make an oval and add a line. Now I have the number 9.”

We had a special grab bag this week. We got to put our hand in the bag and choose a number card. Once we had our number we had to find that number of cubes and lay them out.

Abu bakr- “In measure we were learning about the words “heaviest and lightest”.

Jiya- “We stood on the scales to find out how much we weighed.”

Cooper- “We had to look at the pictures and tick the heaviest.”

You could play this game at home-
http://www.lcfclubs.com/lcf-maths/flash04/z04-games/z04-heavier-and-lighter.asp

We loved making dinosaur masks, we had to use our cutting skills to cut out the dinosaur and then we coloured it in. Once we had coloured our dinosaur we got to choose different craft materials to glue onto our mask.
They are going to look amazing on the wall and I’m sure all of the teachers will get a fright when they walk by our dinosaur masks.

On Thursday we got to spend time doing structured play activities with our buddies. This was our chance to share our learning about our topic “Harry and the dinosaurs.” The buddies also taught us how to play snakes and ladders and they helped us write in our talking book.

Leon- “I enjoyed playing with my buddy.”

Amelia- “I liked playing dinosaur dress up with my buddy”.

Christopher- “I liked playing snakes and ladders with my buddies.”

Another fantastic week in P1B! Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and P1B.

P6/7 weekly update

In literacy we wrote a diary entry as if we were the main character in the story. We focused on chapter 3 this week, at the end there was a bit of a cliffhanger as Michael went overboard. We can’t wait until next week to find out what happens next… Some of us were brave enough to read our diary starters to the class to help motivate and inspire others. We even put a tweet on Twitter, Chi-Chi is famous!! Remember to follow our class @mrsroy16 as we regularly Tweet throughout the week. We also worked in teams to do some comprehension work, that was good fun!

We have been playing maths games to help us develop our understanding of place and value, eg.  maths pacman, roll the dice, roll and stick game and close to the target. Some of us also did a maths population task using the http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ website. It was really interesting as it was a live website and people were being born every second! Cole and Max also made a place value poster for the maths working wall.

Don’t forget the Sumdog Maths Contest is now live until next Thursday, points means prizes!

In PE we were doing some more rugby skills. We had the ‘ Scoop Pass’ competition, James, Nicholas, Leon and Shiv were the scooping champions this week. This game involved concentration, speed and co-odrination. We progressed onto some rugby skills focussing on the ‘back pass’, this took a few attempts to master, Leon was hilarious at this activity as he kept getting confused about when to run and when to pass.

Chi-Chi and Krzysztof were our first Lead Learners and did a great job taking responsibility for the Talking Books this week – well done guys!

Our classroom is taking shape now and there is some fabby work on display for you to see when you next visit us. Remember Ninian’s Natter is on Thursday 14th September 6-7pm if you want to drop in for a blether and some Inspirational Maths activities.

Some pupil highlights:

Cole enjoyed the maths work this week.

Chi-Chi enjoyed using the population site.

Rachel W enjoyed doing the homework challenge.

Remember next week is Inspirational Maths week so come prepared as we may be taking the learning outdoors at times. We are hoping to also start using AAL – Anytime, Anywhere Learning for those who have returned their contracts. Please load the Class Dojo and Sumdog apps onto your device if possible, both are free apps.

Have  a great weekend!

P6/7 and Mrs Roy
