Nursery News

What a busy week – and a great return after the October holiday!

Halloween has been on everyone’s lips this week! We have had lots of fun talking all things spooky – our talking tree has lots of lovely ideas from the boys and girls about what we could learn about around Halloween! Have a wee read – and check our learning wall for some of our fantastic work! Freya brought in some apples from her garden – after we had made apple crumble, we cut these in half and used them to print pumpkins with orange paint!

The staff team were so proud to see how much effort our boys and girls have been putting in with adding detail to their paintings – so much so that Paul received a head teachers award at assembly today for super effort! He was joined by Carter who received an achievement wristband as a well done for his achievement of going a whole mile! Novembers well being focus is ACHIEVING – based on the feedback from our coffee morning, we are looking to create an achievement area to celebrate all the fantastic things our children do! Keep a look out when in and around the nursery 👀

It was lovely to hear about the autumn adventures our boys and girls had! We shared these with our friends and will finish off next week! If anyone has one at home please return on Monday 🙂

Lots going on next week – make sure you check your email for the nursery update on Monday to keep you in the loop 😊 Can’t wait for Tuesdays Halloween party! Fancy dress encouraged!

P2 Term 1 Round Up

Stay, play and learn was a fabulous way to the end the term!  Hopefully everyone managed to sample some of our activities in class.

This term in numeracy and maths we have been learning how important it is to stretch our brains and have a positive attitude towards numeracy.  If we don’t get something correct first time, this is not a failure but an opportunity to grow our brains and stretch our learning.  We start each maths lesson with a positive message,  today we showcased one of the songs we have been learning, have a watch and I guarantee you will be singing it all evening.

In our number talks we have been learning to discuss the strategies of finding out how many there are and then sharing how we could see it and work it out.  Over the course of the term we have used concrete material such as the cubes and counting beads to start a number talk, and then we moved onto using our interactive whiteboard with the Rekenrek (this was on show today at Stay, Play and Learn).

In our numeracy work we have been looking at numbers to 100, counting to 100 in 1s and 10s.  We have been partitioning numbers to allow us to understand the place value of tens and units (sometimes called ones). The children have all built double digit numbers using sticks of ten cubes and single cubes for units, they have then progressed onto being able to draw a simple picture of this, try it out at home by drawing a double digit number like this (Blue = 23  Pink = 15)

Image result for using cubes to show the number 23

We have also began work on finding the number (one/two) before and after up to 100 and next term we will progress onto using the less than and greater than symbols to compare the value of numbers.

In addition and subtraction we are using number stories (calculations) up to 20.  Again we have been using a combination of counting beads, number lines, cubes and our fingers to help us.  Some of us can now see a number line in our heads and work out answers this way.  Using the game Hit The Button and Sumdog are good ways of engaging with addition and subtraction calculations.

In our literacy work we have been using good questioning to engage with the texts we are reading.  Everyone has now got a bookmark with some questions on it to lead discussions at home to help deepen our comprehension of what we are reading.  If anyone has lost their book mark, please dojo to request a new one.  And in class we are using the Blooms Button questions to guide our discussions.  These questions ask us to use creative thinking, apply our knowledge, remember and understand and also evaluate and analyse what we are reading.

In our talking and listening, we have been using a no hands up rule in class to allow everyone an equal chance of sharing ideas; we use lolly sticks with our names on it to see who will answer/contribute.  We understand the value of listening to others as we can learn from each other and we have been given a lot of opportunities for think/pair/share with a partner.

We are continuing to use our vowel house to deepen our understanding of phonics and spelling.  Each vowel sound forms part of the story and we are learning that there is more than one way to make a vowel sound for example oi and oy (sometimes there are rules that can help us know which one to use).  We are also learning key words in class, a lot of these words don’t follow our spelling rules and so we call then our photograph words (sight words).  Here are some of the ways we have been learning how to remember the spellings; THE = Tired Hungry Elephants, SAID = Sally Anne Is Dancing, WAS = Worms And Snakes.  You can even make up your own!

In our writing we have been trying to extend our writing by using the conjunctions and/because.  We have also learned some ordering opening words for our sentences to help the reader know when or what order things happened in.  Some examples are One day, Later, Next, First, After…

Our main focus for our topic work has been Hot and Cold Climates and Scotland.  We have now learned where Scotland is on a world map and now know that the capital city of Scotland is Edinburgh.  Next term we will be focusing our interdisciplinary learning on science and enterprise, very exciting things to come.

It has been a really busy term, enjoy the holiday.

Nursery News

Today we had our Big Bedtime Read launch. It was a lovely day and I would like to thank all the parents, carers and grandparents who came along some even dressed in their pyjamas. It was fantastic to see so many and I know the children really loved  you being there.

I hope you you enjoy reading your pack of 5 books which you have for a week . Once returned next Tuesday you can then pick another pack to take home.  I can’t wait to see any photographs of the children enjoying this new learning adventure. Please don’t hesitate to ask either myself or any member of the nursery team any questions you may have about this initiative.

Here are some photographs of  our exciting day.

A week of fun and laughter in P6/7

Our chosen lead learners this week were James and Isla who did a great job of capturing some of the highlights of the week for us to add to our blog and Talking Books.

Literacy

In spelling we worked as a whole class to discuss spelling strategies and words that are commonly misspelled. Each team had to think of as many strategies as they could and then share them with the class. We then focused on 3 of these: make a song, make a mnemonic and does it look right.

We enjoyed this catchy tune to help us with there, their and they’re.

Can you make a mnemonic for the word ‘people’, post your efforts on our blog post for an extra dojo point?

In literacy we also learned about the work of author’s and how many stages it can take before having a finished piece of writing. We had a go at this and tried to up-level our diary entries from last week by revising, editing and redrafting. This led us nicely into an online meeting with Pamela Butchart, author of many children’s books. We logged onto BBCLive to hear about her work and joined in with the session by making sound effects, answering questions, having a go at illustrating and tweeting, we were delighted when we were mentioned on the BBCLive event and Pamela even tweeted us privately after the event!

Inspirational Maths Week

Wow, where do we begin…This week was all about mathematical mindsets and being creative in maths. We started the week by working in teams to create 2D and 3D shapes with a 7 foot piece of rope in the outdoor space. Lots of laughter, confusion, creativity, frustration and success was had by all! We then examined our own mathematical mindsets and carried out a class questionnaire which led for some interesting discussions. We made some mathematical mindset keys for our tables and maths working wall.

We studied the work of a famous artist/sculptor, Sol Lewitt, and how his work connected to mathematics. The best part was then working in teams to create our very own sculptures using marshmallows and cocktails sticks. Mrs Howley had us learning more about symmetry and did some fun activities connected to this.

Thursday was one of the favourite lessons as we, the pupils, led the lesson by sharing the maths activities we had worked on for homework last week, everyone had made a great effort with these.

Throughout the week we also took part in Numbertalks , the Sumdog contest and Mathanagrams. It was great to see some of the parents getting involved to through dojo. Congratulations to Oskar, Shiv, Mia Stewart and Max for completing the 1000 question Sumdog competition and to Mrs Nicol for winning the parents mathanagram quiz on dojo. A big thank you to the parents who also came along to Ninian’s Natter, it was lovely to see you taking part in some of these activities.

RE

On Tuesday the P7 children accompanied their P1 buddies to mass at St Philip’s. It was a lovely morning and well done to the P7’s for taking their roles so seriously and supporting the younger children. We celebrated St Ninian this week and participated in a beautiful mass on Friday morning. Mrs Purdie awarded us some extra playtime to celebrate the day. The Parent Council also organised a fantastic Scottish afternoon to continue the celebrations. Mrs Roy’s quiz team, the numpties, came 2nd! Everyone got into the spirit and had a fun afternoon!

Have a lovely long weekend, see you all on Wednesday.

We have welcomed parents/guardians/family/friends along this week for stay and Play sessions, and come back and play sessions. These have been very popular and we have had great verbal feedback from those who made it along 🙂 please take time to pop a few words on a post it to tell us what you thought of the sessions – how can we improve?

Mrs Beattie has been drumming up support for new PEEP classes which start on Friday 22nd September! There will be two classes running and although they are full for this block, if you would like to attend the next block please let a member of staff know so they can pop your name on Mrs Beatties list 🙂
