P1M Weekly News

Here are the children’s highlights of our learning this week:

Oliver: “the ‘s’ sound is blue.”

Seren: “it is blue because the back of our tongue is blue and the ‘s’ sound comes from our tongue.”

Chloe: “we were making the ‘s’ sound with pipe cleaners.”

Eve: “we made a Harry and the dinosaurs book.”

Kayla: “we stuck on the author and illustrators name onto the bottom of the book.”

Isabelle: “the title goes at the top of the book.”

Hanna: “we learned how to write the number 8.”

Mark: “we went a walk around the school and saw Mrs Roy.”

Liam: “I made a dinosaur and wrote about the dinosaur. I was the star writer.”

Victoria: “we were writing numbers in flour trays. I wrote the number 8.”

Robert: “we made dinosaurs using plasticine”

Chloe: “we took vidoes with our dinosaurs.”

Blake: “in PE when the music is on we done lots of travelling like running or galloping and when the music stops you freeze or find your own space.”

Evie: “We made a letter ‘p’ with pasta.”

Joshua: “We have a ‘s’ box and a ‘p’ box. Pasta is in the pink ‘p’ box and scissors are in the ‘s’ blue box.”

Below are some ideas to support learning at home:

If you make something at home e.g. a dinosaur, why don’t you make a movie by filming you acting out a story with your creation – great ideas for oral literacy and improving your technology skills!

We were learning about ‘heavy and light’ – what things can you find in your house that are heavy and what things are light?

‘s’ is a blue sound because we use our tongue to make this sound. Can you find the blue veins on the bottom of your tongue. ‘p’ is a pink sound, we make this sound from our lips. Some lip sounds are red because they are loud sounds like ‘m’ but ‘p’ is a quiet lip sound so this is a pink sound. Here are the songs we used to support learning.

P1M Weekly News

What a busy week we have had in P1M.

In numeracy we have working on number formation, sequencing numbers within 5 and counting to 20. Below are some links for videos and games you can use at home to support learning.

In literacy we have introduced 2 sounds this week. The ‘m’ sound and the ‘c’ sound. We have learned that the ‘m’ sound is a red sound, because we make this sound from our lips and our lips are red. We put jam on our lips and made the long ‘mmmmmmmmm’ sound because the jam was very tasty! The ‘c’ sound, is a yellow sound. We make this sound from the back of our moths, we used a torch to look into the back of our partners mouth and when we shone the torch, their mouth turned yellow! Here are some songs we have learned to help us remember the ‘m’ and c’ sounds.

Next week we are learning the ‘s’ and ‘p’ sounds. Do you have the ‘s’ or ‘p’ sound in your name?

Finally, we continued our ‘Harry and the Dinosaurs’ topic by listening to the story ‘Harry and the Dinosaurs go to School’. We were able to compare the way Harry was feeling starting school with our own experiences. In the story, a boy called Jack named himself Jack-osaurus. We thought this was very funny so painted our own dinosaurs and gave them funny names. Mark’s dinosaur was called Mark-osaurus, Blake’s dinosaur was called Blake-osaurus – you get the idea! We can’t wait to show you our paintings!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Meechan and P1M

Fun fun fun in Primary 1B!

Well I think all of Primary 1B will be spending their weekend sleeping as it’s been one busy week!

We have survived our first full week and days of school and we have done it with lots of smiles.

This week in numeracy we have continued with our number formation and enjoyed forming the numbers 5 and 6.
Our rhymes have been helping us with our formation.

We have also been ordering the numbers to 5 and had to cut and stick the numbers into the correct order in our maths jotter.

This game helped us with our understanding of ordering numbers to 10.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/caterpillar-ordering

In our number talks/ CLIC session we have been practising our counting using songs. We loved the following songs and really enjoy the actions.

In measure this week we have been learning the language of Largest, smallest and tallest, shortest.

Miss Boyes showed us pictures of different sized dinosaurs, she asked us to circle the largest or the smallest.

Using the dinosaur toys we put them in order from the smallest dinosaur to the largest and largest to the smallest.

We also used the measuring tape to measure our height and we put our friends in height order to experience the concept of measure in a real-life context.

In literacy we have been learning the m and c sounds this week. We know the m is a red sound because we use our lips to make this sound and c is a yellow sound because when we shine the torch in our mouth we can see what the back of our tongue is doing to make this sound. The back of our tongue scrapes the back of our mouth.
We love the following songs which help us with our sounds:

We experienced a writing lesson for the first time this week, our success criteria was to hold our pencil correctly, use the sounds which we know (m and C) and to be able to talk about our writing. We shared our favourite part of primary 1 so far in our writing.

This week we had PE with Mr Mc Curdy and we loved learning to travel around the hall in different ways and play games with the parachute. We had to use really good listening skills in PE this week.

On Friday we drew our own picture of a dinosaur for our topic and then we painted our dinosaur. We done a great job not mixing the paints and even painted the landscape around our dinosaur. Miss Boyes was very impressed with our painting skills and she loved putting our paintings on display.

We loved our tour of the school and visiting all of the teachers and the children in their class. They were all so happy to see us and we almost felt famous. We took a photo of them with our iPad and we will be drawing a picture of them next week.

We paid a visit to the nursery this week to visit the morning and afternoon children, we loved visiting our old friends.

We can’t wait to see our class photo when it is published! J

Have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and P1B!

P2 News

Another amazing week for P2.  We are well and truly getting back into the swing of school and have achieved a lot this week.

At the beginning of a day we work from our Smart Start boxes, which are filled lots of interesting activities linked to our learning, for example Snakes And Ladders; linked with our numbers to 100, word searches; linked with our topic about penguins, handwriting; handwriting sheets practising the letters we have covered and much more.  We can choose which ever activity we would like to use which helps develop our personalisation and choice in our learning.

We also continued to learn about penguins this week and we used a variety of different types of sources to learn information such as power points and videos.  Here is the link to the video we used to get some of our information.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8qilxaBR20

Using this information we then created fact files.

In numeracy we continued to count up to 100 and look at how numbers are made.  We learned the big word “partitioning” which means splitting a number up into it’s different place values.  Ask us about the magic trick that helped us partition the numbers.

We also all started taking home our reading books this week and everyone was so enthusiastic about their new books.  Mrs Currie was very impressed.

Well done P2!

Time flies by in P6/7

James gave us the title of our blog this week as we discussed how quickly the week had gone.

It all started on Monday where we did some focused vocabulary work linked to our class novel, everyone agreed that it was a pretty tricky task as we had to guess what the word meant by using the text surrounding it then look up it’s actual definition in the dictionary. Do you know what these words mean – reproached and suppurating? Place value is our focus in numeracy this week and we did some paired, independent and group tasks on Monday morning using resources like dominoes and flashcards to play different games to develop our confidence in reading different numbers. The afternoon saw us being introduced to Emotion Works, a whole school HWB resource. Again we linked this to our novel and used the emotion cogs to unpick each of the characters feelings in chapter 1 whilst working in teams.

On Tuesday we were very excited to start our rugby block with Mr McCurdy and everyone came well prepared for the outdoors! We had our first numbertalks session and showed Mrs Roy our explanation skills and mathematical thinking. In our novel study we read chapter 2 and were introduced to our Blooms Superheroes which will help us develop our reading comprehension skills this year. We all chose which questions we would like to tackle and tried to match these up to the superheroes. The afternoon continued with a novel theme and we started some ‘Hokusai’ inspired pictures, we used pastels to try and recreate the famous ‘Great Waves’ painting. Mrs Roy was in awe of our artistic skills!

Writing was a focus on Thursday morning and we used a previous talk lesson linked to our novel to write a balanced argument with the title: Sailing around the world. Everyone gave it their best shot and tried to use persuasive language. In numeracy we began to split numbers and partition them, as the numbers got bigger this became more difficult. We will continue to focus on this next week.

Friday ended the week nicely as we finished our earlier art work and got to do our first Big Maths Beat that challenge. We also went outside with Mrs Roy for a fun rugby session where we learned how to play banana tig with a rugby ball and practised our passing in small teams. The sun stayed out and we didn’t get wet, so that was a bonus.

This week we also welcomed Mr Turner to our class, a 3rd year student training to be a teacher, he will continue to work alongside Mrs Roy each week to support us in our learning.

And finally, the UN Ambassador’s came round all the classes this morning to announce that we had successfully achieved the Level 2 Award for RRS. We were all really pleased especially as some of the people in our class were in that committee last year. Well done everyone!!

Pupil voice:

Louise – We played rugby and it was lots of fun.

Isla – We did Big Maths on Friday.

Amera  – Rugby was fun and wet!

Isabel – Our Kensuke’s Kingdom collage is now up on display and looks good.

Rachel H – We all dressed down today to raise money for charity.

Nursery News

What a wonderful week we have had at nursery! All of our August starts have joined us and we have been very proud of how involved they have become in the activities in our nursery.

We have got almost all of our EE2 forms back from parents – please return these asap as our outdoor learning days depend on them 🙂 in our nursery Welcome area we have all sorts of sign up sheets next week! Take a minute when dropping off or picking up to read over them and sign where suits..

Outdoor Learning Parent Helper Sign Up

Stay and Play/Come Back and Play Sign Up

We value our parents, carers and families very much and thank you for your continued support.

The boys and girls have learned so much this week! We are exploring our changed nursery environment and learning about independent, collaborative and imaginative play across all areas. We have been really interested in the old cameras and have used these in both the morning and the afternoon. Mrs Macdonald has got some photo albums and we hope that parents/carers will bring in some photos from home to help us fill these 🙂 we will also look to get the photos printed that the children take in the nursery.

The Travelling Teddies are back out and about on adventures this weekend! We can’t wait to see what they have been up to 🙂

Mrs Conway was blown away this week by the fantastic skills the boys and girls are developing around the snack table. Last week the AM group used pictures of food and a weekly timetable to choose snack for the week ahead. This week was the turn of the PM group. Once we chose, we then wrote shopping lists to include everything we needed to buy. Some children helped order the food online to be delivered the the nursery. At the snack area we have chopped cucumber, carrots, strawberries and bananas in preparation for snack time. The boys and girls also spread butter on their own crackers this week – which provides them with a wonderful opportunity to build up skills in food and health education. We would love to see some photos of the boys and girls helping to prepare food at home!

A wonderful week and we can’t wait for the next

Primary 7 Weekly News

This week in primary 7 we have been doing reading and maths for our smart starts.

The book we have been reading as a class is called Wonder. The reason we are reading Wonder is because we are focusing on kindness. In wonder the main character is August and he has a deformed face. We have made our own portraits of ourselves in the form of August’s picture on the front cover so that we realise that you shouldn’t make fun of people or judge people even if they look different. We included words to describe ourselves around our portraits which will be used for a wall display next week.

This week we have also been focusing on counting above millions. We have been revising place value and using this to help us with numbers beyond 1 million. We went outside for maths to revise our knowledge of angles and took pictures of angles outside.

In PE we have started Rugby with Mr McCurdy and Miss McCormack did a bootcamp session working on our stamina.

Pupil voice and photographs:

Isabela – On Tuesday we played Rugby.

Ali – On Thursday we went outside and found some angles.

Emma – This week we started to make a design for our wonder wall and we have finished making our class charter.

Edwin – this week for P.E we did rugby and it was fun.

Emily – this week we started playing rugby in P.E. and on Thursday we did bootcamp wich was really tiring but still fun.

Erin R- On Thursday we had assembly and Father Kenneth and Father Matthew came to assembly  and talked to us about Malawi.

Erin O- On Wednesday we wrote diary entries based on our class novel Wonder. We had to write as if we were august going to school for the first time in his life.

P4/5 Weekly News!

It has been a very busy first full week back in P4/5.  The class are all working well as a team and are enjoying learning together.   Highlights this week in our learning include learning our special prayer to St Ninian.  Using our novel Gangsta Granny by David Walliams, we have been exploring character feelings.

In Maths we have been looking at the importance of place value and we all had the chance to take part in a range of carousel activities to help us get more confident at sequencing numbers accurately.

We enjoyed Father Kenneth and Father Matthew speaking to us about what going to school is like in Malawi.   We would like to fundraise to help Father Matthew with his work and maybe write to some children in Father Matthew’s School.

Mark – I was sad when I heard that children in Malawi have classes with more than 100 pupils in them with only 1 teacher.   They also sit on rocks and don’t have chairs and desks.

Hannah –   I am enjoying reading Gangsta Granny and completing the activities that go with it.

Emily – I loved Maths this week and I am more confident with forward and backward numbers.

Evie –   I was shocked to learn that children in Malawi need to use rocks to help them count while we have lots of different things to use.

Ethan –  I loved taking part in handball this week in PE.

Aaron – I enjoyed playing buzz and shazam with Mrs Purdie on Friday.

Aoife –  We are excited that we will be researching the country of Spain for our new topic and we discussed what we would like to find out about Spain with Mrs Smith.

Primary 2 Are A Cool Class

What an exciting week we have had!

We have been using the books Lost And Found and Up And Down by Oliver Jeffers as our stimulus for learning.  With these stories we have discussed friendships as well as learning about penguins.  As a result our classroom is filled with penguins.

In Up And Down we stopped the story at the point that the penguin rushed off to find a way to learn to fly and we had some amazing ideas,

For our numeracy work we had juggling penguins which helped us with our number bonds to 10.

We also looked at numbers to 100, have a go at this game to help you with ordering numbers up to 100.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/coconut-ordering

A lot of hard work from everyone this week! Well done.

Fantastic first week for P1!

Wow! What a fantastic week all of the children have had in Primary 1B!

Even though we have only had half days we have managed to fit in lots of learning activities.

This week we have been doing number formation, drawing patterns in letter join, practising writing our names, we have talked about how we feel about school and we have started our Novel Study “Harry and The Dinosaurs.”

On Friday we went to our first ever assembly and we all listened very carefully to Mrs Purdie. We also received our house badges, our aim is to try to gain points for our house (Glasserton- blue, Whithorn- yellow, Galloway- green and Calder-red).

We have already discussed our class charter and made up our own rhyming poem to help us remember the promises. On Friday we spoke to Miss Boyes about our learning goals for term 1 and we all thought of sensible goals which we will try to achieve.

I am super proud of all of the children this week for starting school in such a positive way. I have thoroughly loved my first week as a Primary 1 teacher and can’t wait for what’s ahead in P1B!

Our PE days next week are Tuesday and Wednesday.

Have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 1.
