P1D Update

We have had another busy week in P1D. On Thursday we had to look after Ninian the Minion for the day because Mrs Purdie wasn’t in her office and we were worried that he might get lonely. He had a very busy day in our class.

First of all, Ninian had to order his lunch. He wanted the blue tray for his lunch.Image may contain: indoor

During our soft start he was playing in the office.

No automatic alt text available.

He joined in with our circle time and he was very impressed with all of the describing words we were using to describe our dinosaurs. He heard super words like ‘dangerous’ ‘colourful’ ‘spotty’ ‘stripey’ ‘spikey’ ‘lovely’ ‘happy’ ‘nice’.

No automatic alt text available.

Ninian then helped Mara to write her story about a dinosaur using some of the super describing words.

No automatic alt text available.

After we all had finished our writing, Ninian wanted to listen to everyone read their stories to the class. He loved listening to the super describing words in our stories.

This week we have been looking at different dot patterns in numeracy and talking about how we can see the dots. You could try this at home too using dots, stickers, grapes etc. Arrange them out in a random order and ask your child how many they can see? Then ask how do you see them? If you lay out 4 dots, they may be laid out with 1 at the top and 3 at the bottom. This game also helps us with this:

We have been learning the ‘s’ and ‘p’ sounds this week. Here are the songs we have used to help us enhance our learning of these sounds. S is a blue sound and p is a pink sound. Ask your child why these sounds are these particular colours?

P5D Weekly Blog!

We have had a good week in P5D.

We have continued with our class novel which has been interesting because it is full of surprises. Who would have thought Boadicea could talk!? We wrote our own predictions about what we thought would happen next.

“It was interesting to listen to other people’s predictions!” – Michelle

We have been doing drama related to our class novel ‘Junkyard Jack’ and recorded ourselves to share with the rest of our class.

“I enjoyed getting to watch the other group’s videos. It was really fun!” – Ola

In maths, we have been rounding whole numbers to the nearest, 10, 100 and 1000.

“I have enjoyed learning about rounding to the nearest 1000 using big numbers.” – Emily

We have been focussing on addition in our Number Talks sessions.

“It is really fun and quite challenging sharing strategies with the class, that’s why I like it!” – Aaron

In PE, we have been developing our skills in hockey. We have been getting our teams ready for an in-school tournament.

“I really enjoy hockey because you have a position to play in the team e.g. a striker, a defender, a midfielder and a goal keeper!” – Zuzanna.

We have been learning about keeping ourselves safe as this month’s GIRFEC focus is ‘safe’. We learned about ‘Stranger Danger’ and how to keep ourselves safe when we are out and about.

“I enjoyed making a poster about Stranger Danger with a group.” – Robbie.

In RE we wrote our own prayers about our hopes and dreams for the new school year.

“I liked writing sentences about important things in school like being ready, safe and respectful, having a growth mind-set and being hard working all the time.” – Kasia

We are looking forward to Scotland’s Maths Week next week.

Congratulations to Ola who is taking our first praise postcard home this week for always being kind, caring and helpful to her peers.

Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond and P5D!

P2 Weekly Update

Here is an overview of some of the learning P2 have been working on this week :

Numeracy – For our Number Talks we have been looking at dot patterns, the question we are asked is “How many dots do you see?”, but the main focus is us describing how we have reached our answer. It is amazing to see all the different strategies that the children use to count.  Here is an example of a Number Talks we completed this week and some of the strategies we discussed.

Now try this Number Talks at home with your child,

We have also been continuing to focus on numbers to 100.  This week we have been counting large amounts by grouping in tens and then counting in tens and adding the ones (units) at the end.  This is leading us on to understanding more about the place value of Tens and Units.

Literacy – We have been starting to learn the key vocabulary words for P2 (there are 28 words that we would ideally like children to be able to read, spell and use in their daily writing by the end of P2).  The words we have focused on this week are but, can, came, for and had. In our writing this week we worked hard to make sure that we use capital letters and full stops in our sentences and we all can now use I when writing a personal story.  Next week we are going to write a set of instructions about looking after a dog (pet).  We will use the Charlie and Lola story We Honestly Can Look After Your Dog as our context to our writing.  You can have a chat at home about this to help your child be prepared for their writing.

Health and Wellbeing – In PE the children have been focusing on hand eye coordination.  They have been using bean bags and balls to practise throwing and catching.  Just to confirm our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday.  The children have also been continuing to discuss feelings using Charlie and Lola as our focus.

Next week it is our Feast Day Mass on Friday in school to celebrate St Ninian, so the children will be doing a lot of learning all about St Ninian’s life and work.  It is also Maths Week Scotland so the children will be engaging in a wide variety of practical numeracy , exciting problem solving and maths games…it is going to be lots of fun!

Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Currie

P3 Weekly Round Up!

Another whirlwind week in P3!

In writing, Mrs Scott was so impressed with the quality of work that we didn’t just have one star writer… we had three!! Our three star writers wowed the class with their amazing news reports about Flat Stanley. Using connectives, ambitious vocabulary and understanding that newspapers need headlines – these are all the skills we built on this week. We can wait to show you at Ninian’s Natter next week!
Our reading groups are up and running now that we have settled into the swing of things 🙂 the boys and girls are using their decoding strategies to build fluency as they read. We plan to change the reading books on a Wednesday, though when children begin to read novels it happens as and when the book ends. We hear reading on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday in small groups where we use various questioning skills to challenge the children’s understanding of what they have read.
As we are continuing to build a reading culture in our class – boys and girls are encouraged to bring a book from home that they might read for enjoyment in class. We have some avid readers in P3 – Roald Dahl and Diary of a Wimpy Kid books have made an appearance this week 🙂
In maths we are continuing to build on our knowledge of number as we practice skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We LOVED the whack a mole game and will continue to use it as we practice counting in 3s, 4s.. etc. Have a go at home – some of us got up to 1000 today!
During Word Boost we read together a picture book throughout the week, focussing on chosen ‘boost’ words to help us develop a broad ranging vocabulary. This weeks boost words were; local, popular, repeat, mumble and vast. Every time you hear any of these words with your child pop your finger on your nose to indicate a ‘boost word’! Can your child use these words in a sentence?
Ninian’s Natter information is on the school’s weekly update – Mrs Scott and I would love to meet the parents/caters of all of our children! Please do come along to meet us, discuss what learning looks like in the P3 classroom and ask questions about the year ahead! 🙂 looking forward to seeing you all then!

September GIRFEC theme – SAFE

Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC)

GiRFEC is the national approach in Scotland to improving outcomes and supporting the wellbeing of our children. To help make sure everyone – children, young people, parents, and the services that support them – has a common understanding of what wellbeing means, we describe it in terms of eight indicators. (see wheel)

Each month we focus on one of the indicators in class and at assembly. This month we will focus on SAFE.

In school some of the activities we will do the develop this theme are:

  • House Captain assemblies to look at being safe in school
  • Fire alarm drills to make sure children know what to do in the event of a fire
  • Every child will identify 5 key adults they can talk to – at school or at home

Working together at home is a really valuable part of this topic. Below are some ideas for family learning around this theme. We would love you to share how you get on!

  • Repeat a road safety routine whenever you are out and about.
  • Introduce your child to people who help us in the community.
  • Discuss how to make an emergency call and the dangers of doing this when there is no real emergency.
  • Make a list of people and their phone numbers your child could contact in an emergency and display it in your house.
  • Discuss the best way to react/respond to this situation with your child – a stranger makes contact with your child online and asks for their personal details. What should they do?

P1D Weekly Update

We have had another busy week in P1D. Here are some of our highlights:

In literacy we have been learning some sounds. We were learning the ‘m’ and ‘c’ sounds. We were learning about the name of these letters, what sound they make and where about in our mouth we make these sounds from. The m sound comes from our lips. We put jam on our lips and made the ‘mmmm’ sound because the jam was tasty! It turned our lips red. This helped us to learn that sounds that come from the lips are red sounds. The ‘c’ sound is a yellow sound. It comes from the back of our mouth. We had to shine a torch in our mouths to see all the way to the back. The torch turned the back of our mouth yellow. We also learned some songs to help us remember these sounds. You could practise these at home too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFUhr2LToBA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-g13UbDxu0

We also started our book study topic ‘Harry and the Dinosaurs’. We have enjoyed listening to 2 of the Harry and the Dinosaur stories so far. In one of the stories there is a boy called Jack-osaurus. We thought that this was a good name so we decided to draw and paint our own dinosaurs and give them names too. Here are some of  our names:

Shea’s dinosuar is called ‘Shea-osaurus’

Pati’s dinosaur is called ‘Pati dinosaur’

Roma’s dinosaur is called ‘Love Heart-osaurus’

Freya’s dinosaur is called ‘Mummy-osaurus’

In one of the Harry and the Dinosaur books, Harry starts school. Some of his friends are feeling excited, others are feeling sad, nervous and shy. We spoke about how we were feeling starting school and if we were feeling nervous and sad what we could do to make ourselves feel better.

In numeracy we were learning the correct formation for numbers 5, 6 and 7. Here are the rhymes and sayings we used to help us.

5 – “the neck, the tummy and the hat”

6 – “bend to low to pick up sticks, now I’ve made the number 6.”

7 – “across the sky and down from heave, now I’ve made the number 7.”

We also started ‘number talks’ this week. We were looking at different patterns of dots and talking about how many spots we could see and how we saw them.

When we saw 6 spots Carter told us:”3 dots at the top and 3 dots at the bottom is 6.”

Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Primary 3

Hola!

Wow – what a week in Primary 3!

Health & Wellbeing

We are working really hard to remember our special St Ninian’s message – Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe which is central to our Class Charter.  Our aim is for this simple but powerful language to be part and parcel of our everyday ethos. Well done Primary 3 for making a fantastic start!

Interdisciplinary Learning

We have loved using Flat Stanley as one of our contexts for learning.

“In Writing, we wrote letters to someone in our family telling them all about Flat Stanley .” – Ephraim. Watch out for these letters arriving in the post soon as Primary 3 will be posting them to you!

Next week, Primary 3 will be writing a newspaper report on the museum burglars from the story and how Flat Stanley saved the day. On Monday we will be discussing as a class the  layout of a newspaper and the purpose of a newspaper report. A great preparation  would be perhaps talking with your child about this beforehand as this can help their contribution to the discussion.

Primary 3 loved the part of the story where Flat Stanley disguised himself as Bo Peep. Just like Flat Stanley they  disguised themselves to see what it was like.

Lucy – ‘I had a mask and a summer hat on, it was fun!”

Dawid – “I was dressed as a skeleton and I had a mask on too!”

Stefan – “I was dressed up as a firefighter. I had a firefighter helmet on. It was very weird!”

Klaudia – ‘I had a firefighter hat and a police outfit. I had glasses on that made me dizzy!”

Dexter – “I was a skeleton and I was wearing a summer hat for some reason.”

Adam – “I wore a red and blue scarf!”

Primary 3 also learned about some of the machines that a letter goes through on its journey to its destination.”

“One of them is called IMP and it takes a picture of the address so it can read the post code!” – Kerr.

“The Sorter Balls sort the letters that are too fat from the ones that are flat.” – Esmee

Numeracy

During Number Talks we have been talking about the strategies we use to help us work out which number is halfway between. We also met Odd Todd and Even Steven for the first time to help us with odd and even numbers.  We will be consolidating our understanding of addition within 20. We know this is really important as these will form our building blocks for manipulating larger numbers.

This interactive Number Facts activity is helpful for extra reinforcement.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/number-facts/number-fact-families

Literacy

“I love my new reading book” – Leigha.

Word Boost & Handwriting– we have loved our Word Boost Story this week, it was called ‘Six Dinner Sid’s Highland Adventure’.  Primary 3 have been so receptive to the story and all of the associated activities to extend their vocabulary. Words for this week have been agile, require, dare, swoop, defend and appetite. We have been practicing how to form certain letters using an appropriate size and trying especially to stay on the line.

Spanish

Mrs Scott was very impressed with how many Spanish Greetings Primary 3 could remember! We will be working on developing confidence at using them with each other.

Have a lovely weekend everyone, from Primary 3.

Adios!

Mrs Scott & Mrs Conway

P1B

Wow, what a busy week it has been in Primary 1B!

Literacy

We have learned 2 new sounds this week.

First we will tell you about the m sound.

This sound is made by pressing your two lips together and holding them. This sound is red because we make it with our lips.

It is a long and stretchy sound…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The second sound we learned this week was c. The c sound is yellow because we use the back of our mouth to say this sound and we need a yellow torch light to see how the sound is made at the back of our mouths. When we shine the torch we can see that the back of the tongue lifts, ‘scraping’ the back of the mouth when we say the sound.  This is a short, quiet, bouncy sound.

We love singing our jolly phonics songs to help us remember how to say our sounds.

Follow the links below to the songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk_LzeQ-KXo

Numeracy and Maths

We have been learning about the numbers 5, 6 and 7.

Here are the rhymes which we use to remember how to form these numbers.

Number 6 is- Bend down low to pick up sticks, now I’ve made the number 6.

Number 7- Across the Sky and down from Heaven. Now I’ve made the number seven.

We have also been ordering the numbers to 5 and had to cut and stick the numbers into the correct order in our maths jotter.

We have been using this game to practise our ordering skills.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/caterpillar-ordering

We have been learning how to count backwards from 10 using this song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sqm-kFNaw8c

We would like to sing it to you at home.

In measure this week we have been learning the language of Largest, smallest, larger and smaller.

Miss Boyes showed us pictures of different sized dinosaurs, she asked us to circle the largest or the smallest.
Using the dinosaur toys we put them in order from the smallest dinosaur to the largest and largest to the smallest.

To show our understanding we cut three houses out and stuck them into our maths jotter in order from largest to smallest.

Can you find items at home and measure them?

This week we had special visitors, Harry’s Bucketful of Dinosaurs came to visit us and they brought Trex who is the leader of their pack.

We have decided that it would be a good idea to teach Trex and the dinosaurs all about St. Ninian’s and the local area.

So we took them on a tour of our school, to meet all of the teachers. We have also created a small world play area of our Local environment with our loose parts.

We wanted to create our own dinosaurs, so this week we painted a design for our dinosaur. We have dinosaurs with spots, stripes and spikes.

We have been practising changing for PE. We are learning how to undo our buttons and then button our shirts back up after PE. We have been finding this tricky but we will continue to practise so that we can be super quick when getting ready.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, from Miss Boyes and P1B
