Primary 2

It has been such a quick week and we have done so much.  Read on to find out about our learning for this week.

Numeracy – We have been focusing on numbers to 100.  We have practised counting to 100 in ones (we have a little tune that we count along to, ask your child to sing it to you).  We have also practised counting in 10s to 100.  Our counting beads have really helped us visualise these numbers and the groups of 10s.  Challenge question : If I push 40 beads to the top of my counting string, how many would be at the bottom of the string?  Here is a link for a fun exercise programme which helps children count to 100 whilst exercising.

Literacy – We have started our Word Boost programme and read the book Who’s At The Door? The children all brought home their first Word Boost postcard to help you practise these words at home with some suggested activities (these are yours to keep so your child does not need to keep them in their folder).  We have also been revising the handwriting of the letters a, b, c, d, e and f.   For story writing this week we used the Charlie and Lola story I Am Actually Not Very Well as our theme and then wrote our own story about when we were not very well.  Next week we are writing story about getting our photograph taken (again based on a Charlie and Lola story Say Cheese).  You can talk about this with your child to help them prepare for story writing next week.

PE – In PE the children have been having lots of fun learning new games which we have to use our skills of spacial awareness to keep us safe during the game.  We have also started running the Ninian Mile this week, all good fun.

Well done everyone in P2 this week, you were all stars!

Have a lovely weekend.

A busy week in P6/7!

A busy week in P6/7!

We are enjoying Kensuke’s Kingdom our class novel for this block. We have discussed the feelings emotions portrayed by the characters in the book and related them to our lives. We then looked at our leisure activities and how the help us to relax. We began our block of rugby with Mr.McCurdy and we need to remember outdoor P.E. kit for this block. In maths, we have been working on improving our Mental Maths through topmarks activities. We have been doing well in our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. P7 pupils have continued to do a great job in buddying our new p1 children while p6 boys and girls did an excellent job in perfecting last week!

Our amazing P7 blog

Our amazing P7 blog

Our class novel is wonder and the main character is August.  He has Treacher Collins Syndrome and Cleft palate.

The book Woonder is about a boy called August and this boy has never been to school because of his face. He has had plastic surgery but nothing could change it. He has had 10 normal surgeries but nothing could change that. His mum decided for him to go to school. He gets a tour, meets new friends and has some complications to work with on his first day of school.

We got a class photo outside and we also took one with the p7 from the other class. We took one normal picture and a silly picture. It was for the school to recognise us.

In Maths we are learning different strategies for number talks, like making the numbers bigger or smaller to make them easier to work with. We also went outside to look for angles and shapes. We also learned about an acute, obtuse and right angle.

In P.E. we are starting our rugby block and we are working on our passing, throwing and teamwork. We have a team to remember for the whole block of rugby and we get to take our own warm up while Mr.McCurdy sorts out the P.E. lesson for us.

We are starting our prefecting Rota and we get to prefect indoors and outdoors.

We hope for all the best for P7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome from Primary 1B and Miss Boyes

Welcome,

The children have all had a super first week in Primary 1 and I am so proud of them all for how they have settled in.

PE days-

Our PE days this term are Tuesday and Thursday.
Children will need their PE kit- yellow top and back shorts/jogging bottoms/leggings.
The children can leave their PE kit in their gym bag on their peg.

Their black indoor gym shoes can be left in class on their chair.

Children in P1-3 are entitled to free school meals and these can be ordered using ipay impact online system. If you are not able to access this, your child will be asked in the morning to order their own lunch.

Children should bring a small snack for playtime and choose a school lunch or bring a packed lunch.

We have been learning our class routines- how to sit on the carpet, how to change our shoes, coats and prepare for lunch.

We have begun to learn how to hold a pencil, we have been practising different strategies-

  • nipping our pencil with thumb and index finger, flipping our pencil and gripping our pencil.
  • Crocodile fingers

We have been practising different patterns through our letter-join resource.

I’m sure the children would love to show you this at home and we will continue to practise this in class.

In class we have been talking about our rights for our class charter and Primary 1 have come up with their own rules (to be ready, respectful and safe) which they are putting into practise.

  • I will sit with my legs crossed and hands in my basket when on the carpet.
  • I will not shout out at my teacher and will wait my turn.

You could ask your child if they can remember the other responsibilities which they chose to match their rights.

We have been learning to right our numbers.

This week we have been learning how to write the numbers 2, 3 and 4.

Here are the rhymes which we use to remember how to form our numbers.

2- Half a heart says “I love you”. Add a line. Now I’ve made the number 2.

3- Around the tree, around the tree, now I’ve made the number three.”

4- Down and across and down once more, now I’ve made the number four.

We have been practising our counting using playdoh and counting teddies etc.

We loved this our smartboard games and songs this week.

Wow, what a fun and busy week it has been.

I wish all of Primary 1B a fantastic weekend!

Primary 2

Welcome to all the P2 children in my class this session.

We have had a fabulous start to the year, everyone has been so bright and cheerful and full of special stories and memories from over the summer holiday.  I have been hearing a lot about the film The Incredibles 2, this seems to have been a particular favourite this summer, which is such a coincidence as I feel that this will be an INCREDIBLE session TOO!

As part of our first week in P2 the children have been getting to know each other and learning all about the new routines in their class.  Here are some of the things they have found out;

PE days – These will be on a Tuesday and Thursday

Coats and shoes – They know which area of the cloakroom they have to hang their jackets and to put their outdoor shoes and lunchboxes on the class trolley.

Smart Starts – Every morning the children self register by making their lunch choices as well as having an activity on their table to get work on straight away.

Prayers – They have revised our daily prayers and learned a new hymn.

Mrs Howley – On a Wednesday 2pm – 3pm the class will work with Mrs Howley on RE and Drama.

Charter – Our class charter this session will focus on the words READY, RESPECTFUL and SAFE. These words will help us to be the best we can be in school.

Smile Chart – There is a smile chart in the classroom where children can get their name on the chart by following the charter and making others smile.

Over the course of the next few weeks I look forward to working with the children on exciting teaching and learning activities.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Currie

Welcome to Primary 6/7

It’s been a great first week in primary 6/7 and everyone has been very enthusiastic to start our learning. Everyone looks great in their full school uniform – very smart, grown up and ready to learn.

We have started our new class novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom. We will be using this as our literacy and topic focus. The pupils have been enjoying reading the novel so far and are looking forward to finding out more about the main character Michael.

We have created our new class charter and agreed on what we think is best for our classroom. We have spoken about the three themes for our school: Ready, Respectful, Safe.

Important information for this term.
PE days for this term will be Monday and Wednesday and pupils will be outside for Rugby (outdoor kit needed including trainers).
Pupils should have indoor shoes for wearing in the classroom.
Pupils should be ready to learn by bringing a sharp pencil to school everyday and any other equipment needed for that day.
Pupils should also bring a full bottle of water every day, which can be refilled if needed.

It’s been a great week working with primary 6/7.
Mrs Young

Welcome to P3!

Hello everyone! Welcome to Primary 3, with Mrs Scott and Mrs Conway!

We have been so impressed with how well our pupils have settled in during their first week of Primary 3. It has been a whirlwind week with lots of new things to learn and lots of fun things going on.

Our learning context for the next few weeks is ‘Flat Stanley’, a book about a boy who gets crushed ‘as flat as a pancake’ – the boys and girls have enjoyed hearing parts of the story and have enjoyed follow up tasks such as making a flat Stanley of their own and finding things in and around our classroom that are as flat as Stanley. Maybe over the weekend they could make pancakes as flat as Stanley?? Yum!

Our PE days are going to be TUESDAY and THURSDAY. Mrs Scott will take the class for class teacher PE on a Tuesday, and Mr McCurdy will take the boys and girls on a Thursday PE session. This week Mr McCurdy had the class growing and shrinking as they played ‘Mario Tig’ – what great fun!

By the end of next week the class will receive their homework diaries and their reading books. For the first few weeks we will run with reading homework only, and build on this as we get further into the term.

If your child is keen to explore other areas of their learning at home they may want to write letters to family members as we will be exploring this in our writing sessions. Perhaps they could build on their mental maths skills by playing games through Sumdog and Topmarks;

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

We will also be looking at measurement in maths, and have already used rulers for measuring this week;

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/measuring-in-cm

Our Class Charter has been completed around the following three school rules;

  1. Be Ready
  2. Be Respectful
  3. Be Safe

We explored these in group work and through drama to come up with some pointers to keep us right – one thing you can help us with is ‘get a good sleep’ which was suggested by the Smarty Pants Group.

We can’t wait to meet you all and get to know our boys and girls even better over the coming term!

Ps. there have been a few good secret handshakes taught to us this week – keep them coming!
