P1D Weekly News

Thank you to the children for helping to write the blog post this week and letting you know what we’ve been up to.

What sounds have we been learning?

Roma: ‘a’ and ‘t’ sounds this week.

Anna: ‘a’ is a black sound.

Shea: it comes from the tunnel in your mouth.

Freya: it lives in a house at the end of the tunnel.

Carter: it is called the vowel house.

Luke: ‘t’ it is a blue sound.

Paul: the sound comes from your tongue.

Shea: the tip of your tongue.

Roma: I spelled the word ‘cat’ using the letter mats and letter cubes.

Freya: We played bingo and we had put coins on the pictures that begin with the sound. I won the game.

Here are the links for our songs for the sounds this week.

We also really enjoyed maths week too. Here are some of our highlights of the activities we took part in:

Scott: I played with the cars and playing on the road. We had to drive the cars on the numbers.

Jane: you had to start driving the car at zero.

Celine: in the sand you had to get the correct number onto the circle shape.

Rojin: it is like being a pirate looking for treasure.

Paul: you had to play on the pond and try not to fall into the crocodiles. You had to roll the dice and find the number to stand on.

We were also experimenting with sound this week in a science lesson.

Luke: we picked musical instruments to make loud sounds and tiny sounds.

Freya: a drum could make a loud sound but if you tap it very gently it can also make a quiet sound.

In our writing lesson we watched a story called ‘Partly Cloudy’ (link below). We then wrote about our own creations using describing words. Have a look at some of these fantastic descriptions:

Rojin: a rainbow dog.

Anna: a rainbow cat.

Carter: a funny dog.

Shea: a rainbow dog.

Michelle: a colourful unicorn.

Roma: a rainbow and glittery dog.

Amelia: a rainbow cat.

We had lots of fun in PE with Mr McCurdy this week.

Luke: we were running, skipping, bear crawls and duck walks.

Layla: I can do crab walking.

Primary 1B news update!

Literacy

In writing this week we have been using our sounds to make words.

We used pictures as a stimulus for our writing; these pictures allowed us to use lots of the sounds that we know so far.

We had to choose one of the pictures about the cat to write about.

Some of us chose to write about a cat on a mat and some of us chose to write about a cat who had a cap.

We are really trying to have a go and have been talking about important things to remember when writing- capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

This week in phonics we have been learning the ‘a’ sound and the ‘t’ sound.

Connor- To say the ‘a’ sound you need to open your mouth wide.

Can you practise saying this sound at home or forming it with some loose parts?

Sophie- “This sound is black.”

Lucy- “It is black because you make a tunnel with your mouth.”

Isla- “The vowel house is at the end of the tunnel and the ‘a’ sound lives in the basement.”

Lily- “When you say the ‘t’ sound you can feel it at the tip of your tongue.”

Lewis- “The ‘t’ sound is blue.”

Syzmon- “It is a blue sound because your tongue has 2 blue veins”.

Maths

This week was maths week and we have completed lots of activities.

We have been using our loose parts to measure objects in the classroom.

We have been using the language- largest, smallest, larger and smaller when building houses with our blocks. We worked as a team to build the houses. We measured our structures.

We used the language empty, full and half full when measuring water into bottles.

We had to colour the correct amount on the picture of the cups to show Miss Boyes our understanding.

We loved using this game because it let us use all of the words we have learned to use when measuring.

https://www.education.com/game/castle-measurement/

Numeracy

We have been counting total amounts and asking our friends to find 5 shells, 3 pebbles or 7 pegs in the loose parts tray.

We have also been using our loose parts to form our numbers.

Science

For Science this week we have been learning how to predict and investigate ways to make sounds louder and quieter. We have been finding out where sounds come from.

We closed our eyes and listened carefully to the sounds around us.

Miss Boyes asked us questions to encourage our thinking-

Were they loud or quiet sounds? Were they high or low sounds? How often did you hear the sound?

We played with the musical instruments and played an imitation game, in which Miss Boyes drummed a different rhythm each time, and then we had to copy it.

Can you listen for sounds at home, what do you hear?

We have discussed the GIRFEC theme safe. We spoke about how to stay safe at school and at home.

We played an interactive game with Miss Boyes (http://www.switchedonkids.org.uk/electrical-safety-in-your-home)

where we had to find all of the things that weren’t safe with the electricity in a house.

We spoke about how to keep safe around electrical items and wrote all of our thoughts in our talking book.

We also linked it to our 3 key words of our class charter, ready, respectful and safe and discussed why it’s so important.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend, looking forward to having you back on Wednesday!

Primary 7 Weekly Blog

This week in primary 7 we have learned lots of new things.

On Monday

In maths we focused on Pascal’s Triangle and Fibonacci’s sequence. For Pascal’s Triangle we looked at our worksheet and had to try and find the secret.

“I thought it was fun” – Lewis

“Pascal’s Triangle is that every row adds up to double the one before” – Rebecca

Also on Monday we went to mindfulness music with Mrs Smith and practiced our hymns for Friday.

Tuesday

On Tuesday we did p:e we a learning how to play rugby we do different games to keep our stamina and confidence.

Wednesday :

We did writing with Mrs Docherty. It was descriptive writing piece about a bridge.

We did P.E again with Mr Macurdy and we were working on contact Rugby this time.

Thursday

On Thursday we focused on grammar and went outdoors on a maths challenge. Mrs Macdonald came in from the High School to do multiplication grids.

Friday

It was our St Ninian’s Feast day Mass also we have changed the name of Golden time into Fun 31 base on the Rights of the Child.

Miss McCormack would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who came to Ninian’s Natter – it was lovely to meet you all.

P2 Weekly Blog

It has been a hard working week in P2, here is an overview of our learning this week.

Numeracy – Maths week has been a real success!  The children had so much fun and great learning experiences using all the maths games and activities set up in our area.  They were able to explore numbers in a wide variety of contexts for example in our ‘Ninian Shop’, Snakes and Ladders and a range of building and counting games.  They also explored shape through the use of pin boards and 2D shapes to make patterns and pictures.   In class we have continued to develop our knowledge and understanding of double digit numbers up to 99.   We have been learning how to make a double digit number ten more and ten less by using the place value system.  We have been using cubes, counting beads and 100 squares to help us do this.

At home you can practise counting forward and backwards in tens to 100 and for some extra practise try these at home,

What is ten more than 40?          What is ten less than 80?

What is ten more than 23?          What is ten less than 65?

Literacy – The common words that we have focused on this week are, have, him, his, new and my. We had a lot of fun using a variety of different activities to help us learn to read and spell these words such as finger painting, chalk writing, word processing and play dough writing. Can you think of any other ways to learn these spellings?  This week we wrote our instructions about looking after a dog and the children all had some great ideas.  Next week we will conclude our Charlie and Lola focus by reading the story Whoops, It Definitely Wasn’t Me.  From this we will write a personal story about a time when we have broken something by accident and we will try to include some detail about what, when and how in our story.

Health And Wellbeing – This week in PE we played a brilliant game which has been helping us learn to throw a bean bag/ball accurately, ask your child to explain the game to you.  Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday.  We have been continuing with our Ready, Respectful and Safe charter in class to help us be the best we can be, and the children are all really trying their very best, the Smile Chart is full every day!  It was also great to spend time with some of our parents and family during Ninian’s Natter which was the children’s first chance to share their learning experiences and successes.

Have a lovely holiday weekend,

Mrs Currie

P5D Weekly Blog

Welcome to our P5D blog post. This has been a really good week.

We have been learning about how to log in to Glow using our own login details and exploring the site and the available features. We enjoyed using Microsoft word online and accessing it through our one drive!

“It has been really interesting and fun to learn about Glow and I managed to login and write on word at home!” – Ola

As it has been maths week, in art we made portraits using numbers only. This meant we had to be VERY creative.  We also made pattern pictures using shape and colour This was trickier than you would expect.

“It was really fun to make the portraits out of numbers!” – Kasia

To help with our number knowledge we have been doing daily number talks, number of the week and the countdown challenge where we have to use the four processes to try and reach the target number.

“I enjoyed doing the number of the week because it was challenging!” – Emily

We have been creating and interpreting different graphs and know that not all graphs contain numbers.

In writing, we pretended to be the main character in our class novel, Jack, and wrote informal letters to his mum to tell her  what we had been up to and how we planned to help her escape from prison.

“What I really liked about writing a letter to Jack’s mum was that we could pretend we were someone else and got to pretend we jumped into Jack’s body!” – Zuzanna

In PE, we have been developing our dribbling skills in hockey. We started a small class tournament and can be rewarded points for winning and good sportsmanship!

“I enjoy hockey and shaking hands with other teams to be a good sportsman.” – Ethan

We have been learning about fiction and non-fiction texts and developed our comprehension skills using a short extract about Ed Sheeran and his musical talent.

“I liked learning about Ed Sheeran and the songs he sings.” – Michelle

“I didn’t know that he wrote his own songs!” – Kasia

“I learned that he wrote a song for Justin Bieber once!” – Calvin

Congratulations to Kasia this week for being awarded our praise postcard for always giving 100% in everything she does!

Have a great long weekend,

Miss Diamond and P5D

This Week in Primary 6/7

This week in Primary 6/7 we have been very busy! In R.E with Mrs Howley some people painted rocks from Saint Ninian’s cave and we were also drawing pictures looking out from St.Ninian’s Cave. In Maths, P7’s worked on Maths Grids with Mrs McDonald from Saint Margaret’s and P.6 were with Mrs Young doing word problems with three digit numbers.

We used the context of our class novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom, to write about setting using interesting and descriptive language.

In P.E we were playing rugby with Mr McCurdie. Daniel got a golden ticket for helping in the lunch hall and he gets to have hot chocolate Friday.

We had a whole school Mass for St. Ninian’s feast day on Friday.

Bea: I enjoy working with P.6 on our novel Kensuke’s Kingdom.

Toni: Mrs Mc Donald taught us to use a grid method to times hundreds by hundreds, I enjoyed this.

Ivana: I enjoyed the writing lesson, using descriptive language to describe the setting of a desert island.

Brooke: I found the Maths tricky because I had to work out what to do but I got more confident.

Ailie: I loved outside Rugby with Mr. McCurdy.

Harley: I enjoyed writing this week. I liked reading about Robinson Crusoe. Have a nice week end .

P2, P2/3 and P3 Maths Week Challenges

The children have all been given a challenge worksheet home with them today.

The rules of the sheet are,

  1. Roll two die and mark in the values into the addition calculation boxes and then add to find a total
  2. EXTENSION : Roll two die and use the two numbers to make a double digit number. (For example if you rolled a 2 and a 6 you could make the number 26 OR 62) Mark this number in the first box and then repeat to get a double or single digit number for the second box. Then add together.
  3. You could work out which total you get most often, is there a pattern?
  4. Encourage your child to talk about the strategies they used to reach their answer.

Your child can use any material that you wish to help with the addition calculations (these can range from cubes, coins, beads…)

If you don’t have any die DON’T PANIC! Here is a link to a website with interactive die for you to use.

Check out the weekly update for more fun Maths family learning activities and ideas.

Happy counting,

Mrs Currie, Mrs Caskie and Mrs Scott

Nursery News

In St Ninians Nursery Class our vision statement is;

‘Where Adventure Nurture and Learning go hand in hand’

This week in nursery we have witnessed beautiful evidence of this through children at play. We are embracing loose parts and open ended resources in the nursery, children are using their imagination to use these resources to create their own learning environment. In the garden they built their own climbing frame and a road from crates and wooden blocks as they went on different adventures. The children are learning the routines of the nursery as they go about their day, staff ensure they feel comfortable and foster a nurturing relationship with each individual child to enable each child to feel secure and free to investigate. The children made their own paint this week and have been preparing their own snack each day. The PM children had ‘Teal’ paint made by Kian and you can see what a social time snack is in the picture. Every child is an individual and they learn at different paces. In St Ninian’s Nursery, it is in a free flow environment where children are learning as they play.

NEXT WEEK

Monday –

Tuesday –

Wednesday – Ninians Natter 6-7 pm, come and meet the staff.

Thursday –  P.E.

Friday – All break for Holiday, children back Wednesday 18th September.

Have a lovely weekend from the Nursery team!!

Primary 1B news!

Primary 1B

Wow, we can’t believe it’s Friday already!

Literacy

This week in literacy we have learned 2 new sounds, the s sound and the p sound.

The s sound is light blue because it is a quiet sound which you feel at the tip of your tongue.

S is a stretchy sound, can you feel it sizzling?

The P sound is Pink because it is a quiet sound which we make with our lips.

Put one finger in front of your lips

Pretend that it is a candle.

Say p quietly .

Can you feel the air that could blow out the flame on the  candle?

We have been singing our songs to learn our sounds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybiJTZNLvTI

After painting our pictures of a dinosaur last week, we followed on from this by making our dinosaur with clay. We used the iPads to record stories with our dinosaurs. In our writing jotters we draw a picture of our dinosaur and then wrote about what it looked like. We used great describing words. We are trying to use the sounds that we know in our writing and have been reading our writing to Miss Boyes.

Numeracy

We have been learning about the numbers 8 and 9. We have been learning how to write the numbers using the rhymes.

8- Draw a ‘S’ and close the gate, now I’ve made the number 8.

9- Draw a circle and add a line, now I’ve made the number 9.

It’s important to remember not to lift our pencil for the number 9. Sometimes we are going the wrong way with our pencil and it is starting to look like a p.

In number talks this week we have been investigating different dot patterns. We have been explaining to Miss Boyes what we see and how we see it.

During a number talks we put our fist on tummies to show we are still thinking, we put 1 thumb up if we have a strategy.

You could practise talking about dot patterns at home. Miss Boyes will include some examples in our homework folder in case we want to practise.

Maths

We have been learning to how to measure objects and describe their weight using the words heavy or light and heaviest and lightest.

Can you use this language at home?

This week Harry from the story “Harry and the Dinosaurs” sent Miss Boyes an email. Miss Boyes told us what an email was and showed this to us on the laptop. Harry said that he has a special mission for us to look after his dinosaurs and teach them lots of new things. We made a map of what we want to teach the dinosaurs and what we want to learn from/about them.

Trex is Harry’s favourite Dinosaur, he wants to learn about how to be a great P1 (just like us) and all about our local area. If you have anything you would like to tell Trex leave a message and we will read it to him.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, from Miss Boyes and P1B!
