P5D Weekly News

Welcome to our P5D weekly blog.

We have been busy this week. In writing, we used our pictures that we illustrated during our visual literacy lesson as the stimulus for our creative writing. We focussed on setting and character in this story.

In PE, we learned how to play two new games, Russian and Swedish long ball. It was really really fun because we could play two games.

We have been learning about one point perspective art and created our own pictures using the skills we learned. We also used our prior learning about tone to help create a 3D effect when we were adding colour to our pictures.

In maths, we have came to the end of our money topic and completed a little assessment. We also set up our own Pizza Parlour to help us with our understanding of money. In number talks, Zuzanna shared a new strategy with us where she used place value negative numbers! How impressive for P5!!

We have been learning about Road Safety this week and have made posters as part of the Road Safety competition that had to include a slogan.

We have been learning how to send an email using our Glow accounts and all successfully managed to email Miss Diamond.

We have been continuing with our class novel ‘Billionaire Boy’ and have been using this to learn new vocabulary through word boost.

Huge congratulations to Zuzanna this week for being awarded our praise post card! She always tried hard and tackles challenges with a growth mind-set! Keep up the good work Zuzanna.

Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond and P5D J!

Numeracy

Lucas: on the laptop you had to drag the teddy bears into the house. For 4 you could put 2 into 1 house and another 2 in the second house.

Amelia: For 6 teddy bears you could do 3 and 3.

Shea: For 7 teddy bears you could put 6 in 1 house and just put 1 in the other house.

Rojin: You had to pick up a lollipop stick and there was an adding sum. If it was 3+4 you had to start on 3 and then make 4 jumps. This was on hopscotch.

Scott: With bowling we had to roll the ball and you count how many.

Shea: On the tuff table you had to make the numbers with numicon.

Here is the link for the number bonds game we have been playing in class:

We have been practising our subitizing skills by using this song to help us:

Nativity

We are continuing to practise for our nativity twice a week. We listen to the songs in class every day too. Look out for letters about costumes in homework folders next week.

Roma: we have been talking about going on and off the stage and practising our songs.

Carter: we have to point at me and Roma when the songs are about us.

Freya: we all have a song about the main characters. I like singing ‘shhh’ for King Herod.

Writing

We had a little surprise on Wednesday morning when a fairy door had appeared in our classroom. I wonder what is behind the door?

Freya: a fairy door is in our class.

Roma: it has a key in a bottle.

Lucas: I thought a soft play was behind the door.

Amelia: I think a scary soft play.

Mara: I think a magical zoo.

P2 Weekly Post

Preparations for our Nativity performances are well underway!  The children are sounding great.  All the children have now received information regarding costumes and any relevant speaking parts.  We are getting so excited to surprise you with our amazing singing and acting.

In class this week we have been continuing to focus on subtraction in our numeracy learning.  We completed another find it and fix it piece of  about Winnie The Witch.  Winnie at witch school completed a worksheet but she got some wrong.  We had to find the ones she got right and fix the ones she got wrong.  It was great fun!

We used our Mighty Writer to help us retell the story of Tabby McTat.  We tried really hard to use connectives; but, and, because.  We had some super results.  Our star writers this week were Micah, Ibad and Amelia.

We have been learning all about hospitals this week in Our Community Topic.  We talked about a picture and then we wrote some sentences about all the different people who help in a hospital.

In PE with Mr McCurdy we were doing races.  In the races we were jumping and dancing to help keep us fit!  It was very tiring.

Have a lovely weekend

P3 Weekly Round Up!

A fantastic week for P3 – we have been out and about this week… lots of adventures have been had!

On Tuesday the boys and girls were lucky to join the infant classes for a trip to The Vue Cinema in Livingston where they seen a lovely movie called ‘Flying the Nest’. The boys and girls in Primary Three gave this movie good reviews! It was a long morning after walking up and down to the cinema… but the class managed to squeeze in just a little bit more learning before the end of the day!

As it was Cool to be Kind week our young people have embraced the anti-bullying message to ‘CHOOSE RESPECT’. The highlight of Cool to be Kind week was making fortune tellers with positive friendly messages inside! This was so inspiring to our class that many children chose to make additional fortune tellers when finished their work, or during SmartStart. We watched a lovely video at our house captains assembly this morning which teaches us that kindness is a ripple effect…

We hope these messages will continue to live in the hearts of our P3 pupils as we aim to ensure our three school rules are being met; READY, RESPECTFUL, SAFE.

Our new topic is based on the Lanthorn Community centre and how it services the needs of our community in Dedridge. We have spoken about our schools place in the community and some of the buildings/services we have nearby… and some that are further afield! We were very lucky on Thursday as Donna, who has worked at the Lanthorn for many years, agreed to meet us for a tour! The boys and girls came up with fantastic questions about the Lanthorn, some of which Donna was able to answer. Lots of us wanted to know what was up the stairs at the Lanthorn… and now we know; a computer suite, a small meeting room that is used for crafts, a large meeting space, a lawn bowls carpet area and the office of the ‘Dedridge Good Neighbour Network’. We met Cheryl who runs the DGNN and she told us all about the people in Dedridge (and beyond!) who use the facilities. The highlight of our trip wasn’t only the keyrings and badges we got from the library ladies… it was our juice and biscuit we got from the lovely ladies at the cafe! Prior to our visit we looked at the council web page for the Lanthorn and discussed reading for information, scanning and finding key pieces of information and whether a site was a good site to trust. See if your child can find out information about the Lanthorn using the link below;

https://www.westlothian.gov.uk/article/6398/Lanthorn-Community-Centre

As if that wasn’t enough… we also went for a ‘prayer walk’ tour of our local parish church. Father John was there to greet us and guide us around our prayer walk. We learned about the font, the altar, the Tabernacle, the paintins and statues and the stations of the cross. Primary 3 were so respectful and mature during this session – they made us very, very proud! We prayed for the people of the parish and bowed to the cross on the altar as we left. In addition to this, we have been thinking about November as the month of the Holy Souls and learning the Eternal Rest prayer;

Image result for eternal rest prayer

After all the excitement at the Lanthorn, we managed to squeeze in a quick ten minute playtime at the Lanthorn Park!

It was lovely to see so many of our parents/carers on Wednesday and Thursday at parents night! Mrs Scott and I would like to thank you for your continued support over this term and encourage you to get in touch with any queries or concerns through the usual channels such as homework diary or afternoon pick up 🙂

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Conway and P3 🙂

P6/7 Weekly News

Cool to be kind was the theme of the week and this year’s focus was CHOOSE RESPECT!! Here is how we linked it to our lessons:

Wordboost – We used a powerpoint about ‘Cool to be kind’ to select our BOOST words for the week.

Writing – We were inspired by this poem, ‘If’, to think about friendships and what we would want a friend to do for us. Check out our Twitter page to see our X Factor Poetry Plenary.

Art – We had to represent the word ‘Respect’ visually in any way we chose for an upper area display.

Groupwork – We worked in teams to make posters about what we had learned about the ‘Science of Happiness’. We have been trying out some of the suggestions.

RE – We researched Saints who were great examples of showing kindness and respect to others.

Assembly – The House and Vice Captains from our class were involved in planning, preparing and delivering an assembly about this week’s theme. They did a great job and had a captive audience!

Pupil Voice:

Brooke – I liked doing the poem of friendship as I liked trying to use rhyming words.

Harley  – I liked adding and subtracting decimals this week.

Ambra – We did a friendship poem I liked it but it was challenging.

Lauren – In school this week we have been doing Respect pictures and in PE we have been working on our fitness.

Aria – We did some artwork for the word Respect.

Bea – There was a Sumdog competition and our class came 16th out of all the West Lothian classes who had entered. Matt in our class came 9th overall in West Lothian. Well done Matt!

Teacher voice:

A fantastic week for all in P6/7. It was great to meet so many parents this week to discuss the progress of all the children. I am very proud of them all!!

A special mention to all who participated in the Sumdog challenge for homework – great teamwork and dedication to get on the leaderboard. It was great to also have one of our pupils, Matt, in the top 1o!!!!

Another special mention to Ailie who was nominated for Hot Chocolate Friday as she had prepared so well for her JRSO presentation at assembly.

Finally, I received an email this evening to inform me that Bea and Toni have made it into the top 20 in the West Lothian Name a Gritter competition. I have put details of how to vote for them on the school app and I have also emailed everyone in our class. All the teachers have been posting their votes too for them!!! Good luck girls!!!!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

P2 Weekly Update

In P2 it is definitely Cool To Be kind!  The children have been learning all about choosing to be respectful this week and I loved all the odd socks!

On Tuesday we had a great trip to the cinema.  We watched the film “Flying The Nest”.  SPOILER ALERT! It was about a young bird called Ploey who could not fly yet and for a few reasons he missed his chance to migrate south for the winter.  So he had to try to survive in wintry conditions and not be caught by the mean bird of prey Shadow!  He learned that through building friendships and being kind, as well as having a growth mindset, he could do anything!  In the end he was reunited with his friends and family.

We were all so inspired by this story that on Thursday we used the Mighty Writer board to help us recount the story.  We tried really hard to use the connective “because” to link our sentences.  Thank you to Leon and Kayla who gave us two WOW opening words in our writing; Meanwhile and Just then respectively.  The results were super and our star writers this week are Christopher, Hannah S and Chloe, well done.

In numeracy we have continued to learn and apply subtraction skills this week.  We created our own calculations and have started to try to work out how we can find a missing number in a calculation.  Try these calculations out at home, if you work out an answer you can post a reply.

12 – 7 =                         15 – ? = 9                      ? – 4 = 8

In PE Mr McCurdy was working on core strength with the children and they were learning about their abdominal muscles.  The children all rose to the task well and demonstrated skill and control on the gymnastic equipment.  Jiya and Chloe had great spring in their work and Oliver demonstrated super strength and control on the rings.  Well done everyone.

What a super week.  Have a lovely weekend.

Hello everyone,

Spanish-

We have continued to learn the Spanish colours.

Connor- “We played pass the parcel- Miss Boyes put a picture of a Spanish colour in the envelope and every time the Spanish colour song stopped we had to open it and say the colour in Spanish.”

Lily- “Rojo is red.”

Julian- “Verde is green.”

Shakti- “Rosa is pink”.

Joanna- “Azul is blue”

Literacy

This week we have been learning the d and g sounds.

Emilie- “The d sound is dark blue.”

Liam- “We make the d sound at the tip of our tongue.”

Sophie- “The d sound is a loud sound.”

Lucy- “The g sound is orange.”

Adam- “The g sound is orange because it is a loud sound.”

Joshua- “goat has the g sound at the beginning.”

Connor- “Our boost word gobble has the g sound.”

Lewis- “Dad has the d sound at the beginning and the end.”

Here are our songs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bU2RgXz1Pc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqYdeDxBYSM

Numeracy-

We used the rekenrek on the smartboard during number talks. We moved the beads and had to say how many we saw and how we saw them.

We made addition sums from looking at how many beads there were altogether.

Could you make these addition sums using the rekenrek at home?

2+8   3+7  4+6   5+5

Here is a link to the rekenrek
https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/number-rack/

We have been playing the hit the button game. You can choose number bonds and then pick addition to 10, this is a fun way to practise our adding.

Here is a link to the game

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

This week was cool to be kind week. We listened to the story of Superworm and we shared all of the things Superworm did to help other characters in the story. We then wrote a recount of something which happened in the story.

Lucy- “Superworm was very kind and he made himself into a skipping rope for the bees.”

Here is a link to the superworm story so that we can listen at home.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FpN4dftXLI

We listened to a song all about RESPECT.

We liked talking about the scenarios in this song.

Being respectful is one of our school rules.

We hope that everyone has a lovely weekend, from Miss Boyes and P1B
