Our busy week

Pupil voice:

This week has been a very busy week for P6/7, many exciting things have happened!

Cole: The P7’s made Santa’s Grotto and Santa came to our school last night at the Christmas Fair.

Brooke: I enjoyed doing Santa’s Grotto at the Christmas fair.

Bea: This week we started Christmas dancing and we had a great time, we even helped the nursery learn some Scottish Country Dancing.

Neve: We started Christmas dancing in PE.

Joshua: We did Scottish dancing

Matt: We did Scottish dancing.

Ambra: We did Scottish dancing.

Ivana: I learnt how to use a Bunsen burner.

Haseeb: We learnt how to make paper bags.

Abi: I enjoyed my gymnastics competition because I came second place.

Beth: This week the gymnastic team went to compete, my team came 2nd and I came 1st individual I was so excited.

Aria: I went to a gymnastic competition and we came 2nd and 3rd

And this was our busy week.

Teacher voice:

As you heard from the pupils they have had a really busy week.

Our P7’s went to St Margaret’s Academy for their first transition visit. Dr McAllister led them in a Science lesson where they got their bunsen burner licence, learned how to draw scientific diagrams and worked with a partner to complete a science investigation.

Our P6’s went to the Lanthorn to participate in the P6 Cluster Assembly to celebrate St Andrew’s Day. They sang the hymn ‘Follow Me’ and some of the children read out the prayers they had written for Scotland.

As part of Catholic Education Week we learned about life in India and how families had to make paper bags to sell – 10 bags would earn you 1 rupee. The children worked in teams/families to try to make as many bags as they could in 1o mins (thanks to Mrs Reeves for the demonstration). On average each team/family made 17 bags. We all agreed that this must have been a tough job for the families as they would have to work very long days just to make a basic amount to live on.

There was also great excitement in the class this week as we prepared for the Christmas Fair. Santa’s Grotto looked amazing-well done everyone! A special mention to my ‘little elves’ who helped out last night, they did really well!! They raised £160 on the night!!!!!

We started Scottish Country Dancing this week. Mr McCurdy asked us to assist him in teaching the AM nursery some Scottish Dancing, it was lovely to see the older children helping the younger ones, smiles all around!!

Well done to Aria, Beth and Abi who competed in the gymnastics competition this week – they were fantastic ambassadors for our school and came back buzzing with excitement!

Next week we will begin learning more about our country, ‘Scotland’ as part of our interdisciplinary learning. We will also be changing our class altar to purple to celebrate the beginning of Advent.

I finished the week by attending a mass at St Margaret’s Academy this afternoon which was offered for teachers in West Lothian.

P2 Weekly Update

We cannot believe it, but next week is our dress rehearsal on Thursday for our Nativity show.  If you have not brought in your narrators outfit (Black trousers/leggings and a white top) please have into school in a labelled carrier bag by Wednesday.

This week in class we have focused on the spelling pattern -ck at the end of words.  We noticed that the vowel in the middle of the words were single and short;

chick       flick       sock       clock          crack         black

Next week we will look at what happens if there is a long vowel in the middle of a word with the hard k sound at the end.

In Numeracy we have finished off looking at subtraction and addition.  Next week we will focus on working with money (we might even have to use our adding and subtracting skills to help us use our money too!).  The coins that we are using will be 1p, 2p 5p, 10p and 20p.

Our Christmas Fayre this week was a huge success and the fun does not stop here!  Next week there will be a Christmas game that will coast 50p a go, the children have to choose a box and then a winning box will be drawn and they can win a prize.

In Our Community topic this week we have learned all about Fire Fighters and the important jobs they do in our Community;

Micah – when someone is in a room and there is a fire the fire fighters will come and the people that are stuck will be taken out of the window.

Christopher – when there is a fire they put it out.

Kayla – they take you out of a car if you have crash.

Oliver – to help people or animals when they are stuck up in high places.

It has been wonderful listening to all the book reports this week.  The children have had their feedback put on their one note profile.  Well done everyone.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Currie

We have been celebrating St. Andrew’s day and have been learning about his life.

We have been improving our digital literacy skills and learning how to use Word Processing. We had to change font colour, style and size, add a picture from the internet and then had to email our saved document to Miss Diamond.

We have enjoyed helping our school by making facecloth Reindeers to sell at the Christmas Fair. We planned adverts in writing and then work collaboratively in groups to create the posers to help advertise and sell our product.

In Maths, we have been learning about decimal numbers and how to multiply them by 10, 100 and 1000. We have had a range of activities to help us with this learning including using digital question cards and written tasks as well as physically using our bodies to make numbers.  We have been recapping on lots of our previous learning using a murder mystery investigation keeping all maths concepts fresh in our brains.

In PE, we have started our preparations for our Christmas party and have started our Scottish Country dancing block.

We had one group working with Mr Turner this week, learning all about plastic pollution and the children were having conversations about the effects of plastic pollution and they then put their ideas into posters.

Well done to Emily from our class and her team in gymnastic who came second in their level 2 group competitions.

P1B news update

This week we learned the x sound.

Connor- X sound is made up of 2 sounds, c + s.

Lucy- This is why it is light blue and yellow.

We have been learning how to say the sound.

How to blend x with other sounds to say words.

How to write this sound.

Emilie- I know box has the x sound at the end.

Isla- I know that mix has the x sound at the end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USctmIdUDZA

We enjoyed our visit from our local Librarian this week, she came to read us the bookbug stories and we got to pick our favourite. Our favourite was I am bat.

Here is a clip of the story…

We had a special visit from an elf this week, his name is Eddie.

Eddie said that he needs our help with some tasks as it’s very busy in Santa’s workshop.

We had to help Eddie sort lots of toys because the Elves forgot which force you use to make them move. First we had to learn what a force was and then we investigated the toys and sorted them by push toys and pull toys.

We then made our own toys because Eddie said there were lots of lists coming in and they needed help to make enough toys. We used our creativity and imagination skills to design and make the toys.

Some of the toys we made were- a castle, a robot, a boat and a rocket.

Following on from this for our writing lesson we made a poster to encourage children to put the toys being made in the workshop on their list. So we had to write about what the toy looked like and what it could do. Our persuasive posters were super and we think the children will know exactly what to wish for this Christmas.

In numeracy we have been learning all of the ways to make 9.

How many ways do you think there are to make 9.

This game could be played at home to help with learning the different ways to make a number.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=WaystoMake

We have continued practising for our nativity and we are busy learning our actions and words. Our singing is super and we can’t wait for you to hear all of the songs.

Just a little reminder that costumes should be brought to school by Monday the 3rd of December.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and Primary 1B.

Another great week, the time is flying by!!!

This week we studied financial literacy connected to our Enterprise and numeracy work. Everyone had great fun learning about and creating budgets!! The pupils were not amused when they had to spend their hard earned cash on fixing washing machines and paying bills!!! I was really pleased to read about how they had got on with their budgeting task at home, almost everyone stayed within budget. We also looked at the differences between debit and credit cards.

In writing we explored issues affecting Scotland and then chose one to write a prayer about. Check out Twitter to see some examples.

We began thinking about Catholic Education Week and started by discussing what was good about our school, this then led to a discussion about what was good about a faith school. Again see Twitter for our main discussion points.

Preparation is underway for next week’s Christmas Fair – P6/7 are in charge of organising Santa’s Grotto. We have made advertisement posters and videos with the ipads, made template letters using Microsoft Word, made a Christmas postbox, sorted out  Santa’s gifts and wrote a blog post!! Phew…..

Many of the children have expressed an interest in helping me out next Thursday evening between 5.30-7pm. I will give them a time slot to allow them time to also enjoy the evening with their families. They can wear something Christmassy!!!!

A reminder for P7’s that they are going to St Margaret’s for their first Science lesson bewteen 10-12pm on Monday. They will need a small snack.
