P5D Weekly News

Welcome to our P5D weekly blog. In PE we have been trying to improve our stamina by participating in timed running activities and have been playing capture the flag with P5R!

In art, we have been learning about tone and how we can use dark, mid, light and highlight tones to create a 3D picture. We used our skills to create landscapes.

This week we have been celebrating ‘Cool to be Kind’ and anti-bullying week. We have been learning about Jessie J and Dolly Parton and how they wrote songs about a time when they were bullied at school. We had to analyse the song lyrics to work out the messages being given. We then used emotion works to explore the emotion that both of these ladies were going through.

We worked in groups to read and learn about different forms of bullying and leaned that there can be cyber, physical, verbal and emotional bullying and all are just as important as each other.

In maths, we have been trying to solve more challenging money problems that had at least 2 steps to them. We used calculators to help us.

In writing, we were being visual authors and had to create a fantasy story through drawing. Next week we will be using our drawings to then write a story.

Congratulations to Hasan this week for being awarded our praise postcard. He has demonstrated a mature attitude towards learning and has tried very hard in all tasks this week. Well done Hasan.

Have a great weekend. Miss Diamond and P5D!

Four of the capacities in the early level are Health and Well-being, Language and Literacy, Mathematics and Numeracy and Technology. The children are learning through play and here are some wonderful examples of literacy, math and well-being in pictures. Using sticks and beads to recreate shapes, using different media to write or create their names, counting using conkers and using a cardboard box to make a bed to read and make friends in. We are so pleased to announce our EXCELLENT grading from the Care Inspectorate!!! Thank you to each and every one of you for your continued support.

Emileigh- Rose “We learned the u sound this week.”

Liam- “The u sound lives in the vowel house.”

Lily- “The picture for u is an umbrella because we need to put our umbrella up so inky’s ink does not drip on us.”

Here are our songs…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoVrsX6P-W8

For writing this week we wrote about our experience of seeing fireworks. We used our mighty writer board for the first time.

We were able to use our mighty writer board to help us structure a sentence. It showed us where to put our capital letter and it had picture reminders for what to write.

Khyla- “ I wrote about sparkly fireworks.”
Isla- “The star on the board meant you had to use a wow word.”

Ethan- “I wrote about the loud fireworks.”

Emilie- “I wrote about colourful, rainbow fireworks.”

Numeracy

We continued to learn how to add numbers this week. We have been completing written calculations. We have been counting on and trying to do this in our heads.

We enjoyed reading the number sentences and then using the numicon to identify the total amount.

We also completed addition challenges using the cubes this week. We had to read the cards and add the correct number of cubes together.

We have been using our ten frames to add 2 amounts within 10.

In number talks using our addition knowledge we have been finding the best strategies to make a total.

Can you find different ways to make 3?

Can you find different ways to make 4?

Can you find different ways to make 5?

Can you find different ways to make 6?

We used our bunny ears (fingers) to show Miss Boyes different ways of making an amount.

We have started practising for our nativity, this week we have been learning about the nativity story. We have been learning who was in the story, where it took place and what happened.

In music  we have started practising our nativity songs. We are loving our songs and are going to practise lots.

Have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and P1B

P2 Weekly Up date

This week our learning has been sparkling, as we rocket our way through our lessons, glowing as bright as the stars!

In numeracy this week we have started to look at subtraction.  We learned that there are different words that mean take away; subtraction, less than and fewer.  We have been using cubes, counting beads, number lines and our heads and fingers to help us solve calculations. We noticed that if you are using the number line you have to count in the opposite direction (to the left) because taking away makes a number smaller!  Great learning everyone.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Use the above link to go the game Hit The Button, and choose subtraction within 20 to practise some more.

For our spelling this week we have revised our vowel house story and focused on three of the patterns, oo, ee and ai (ay at the end of a word) and we learned the following words – book, look, shook, sheep, keep, seek, rain, pain, gain (play + day).  We completed a range of practical activities to help us learn these patterns.

In our “Our Community” topic learning we have been creating a Map Of Me where we learned about our place in our world.

These flip books start with a picture of ourselves, then a picture of our house, then a picture of our community Livingston, then a picture of Scotland and finally a picture of the Earth.  Thank you Mrs Burchill for helping us produce these.  They have really helped us to understand where our community Livingston is and how it is part of the community of the world.

Next week we will be visiting the cinema on Tuesday, please remember to complete the permission slip and return it to school.  Our writing next week will be all about this trip and the film we see.

Have a lovely weekend.
