Prinary 7 Weekly Blog

In class this week we did lots of different things.

On Monday morning we did our reading and some groups were answering questions on their task map and others were reading their book to try and finish it.

This week was our first week focusing on our new math topic time.

For time we are working on reading timetables. We were allowed to use are devices to search up the Scotrail website and answer some questions.

Also in the week we had a special visitor called Allie who came in to give us a mindfulness session. She showed us bottles with water and glitter in it. This was to show us that when we shake it the glitter goes around the bottle and it is to show us that this is what are minds are like when they are full. Though the glitter soon settles and that is what are minds should be like.

Mrs McDonald came in to do our maths and we are still doing our gymnastics in P.E.

Pupil Comments:

Taylor: I really enjoyed the gymnastics in P.E especially the wall bars because I got to do flips and have fun with all of my friends on the equipment.

Rebecca: I enjoyed doing a newspaper report about Mary Queen of Scots execution for writing.

Maxx: I enjoyed doing arts and crafts with MRS G!! Doing our pillow project for Father Simon for going to High School.

Charlie: I liked having the monkey bars really high up in gymnastics!

Zara: I liked having Mrs MacDonald for maths this week.

P1D Update

We have had a busy week this week – a highlight has definitely been learning more about castles and adding more features to the castle in our classroom.

Literacy

We are continuing to consolidate our knowledge of the ai and oa sounds. We will be learning more sounds next week. We have used this game in literacy this week to extend our learning:

https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/PictureMatch.html

We also visited the local library where we have started to explore non-fiction books and their features. We have been successfully using an index page to find out information about castles.

Numeracy

We are continuing to learn about numeracy. We enjoyed singing along to this song:

This helps us with our mental subtraction strategies of counting back. It would be great if you could practise counting back from 10 or 20 (as a challenge) at home.

We used this game to enhance our learning this week:

Here are our highlights of the week

Lucas: I liked learning about jesters. They make people laugh.

Luke: I liked learning about knights. Knights fight other castles.

P5D Weekly News

In P5D we have been redrafting our imaginative stories that we have been working on over the last few weeks. We are making them into our own books so used word processing to type them up and have been drawing illustrations to go with our stories.

“I liked to type up my story and then was able to print it out.” – Maliha

“I thought this was fun because I got to write it in my jotter then up-level it on the computer. I like drawing pictures and colouring them in!” – Morgan

“I enjoyed doing this because I could make my own imaginative character and make my story into a book!” – Levente

“I enjoyed it because I got to use my imagination!” – Emily

We have had lots of fun in PE because we are doing our gymnastics block at the moment so got to use the equipment. We had to do handstands, make up balances using the rope rings, we were tensing our muscles to create body tension to help with balance.

“It was really fun because we got to hang upside down!” – Zuzanna.

“In PE it was super fun because we did a lot of balances and practised doing handstands!” – Aaron

“It was really fun because we got to do a sit down balance but in the air on the rings!” – Michelle

In maths, we have been learning about time and converting times from 12hour-24hour and vice versa. We are finding this quite tricky but will keep trying. We are trying to use our classroom clock to help us!

We have been working very hard to get our show ready for our audience performances next week and can’t wait to show you all! We have had our first rehearsal without scripts and everyone managed very well.

P2 Weekly Update

It has been a chilly week but P2 have been ‘hot’ with their learning!

One way we have kept our learning warmed up is by doing our counting in 2s exercises.  Use the following link to try it out at home.

Mrs Currie’s favourite move is the “slide”.  Leave a reply to tell me your favourite move.

Also in numeracy this week we have been looking at sharing amounts equally into groups.  This will form part of our home learning next week.  Lots of practical practise using concrete material will really deepen our understanding before we move onto written equations, also putting the problems into context helps us to see the links with real life and how we will be able to use these skills in the future.

For our writing we have been working hard over the last three weeks to create and build an imaginative story. It all started two weeks ago when we invented a character and wrote a character description.  Then the following week we made a plan for our character’s story and wrote a brief beginning, middle and end.  Then this week we tried to up level our plans by adding in more detail such as adjectives and conjunctions to extend our writing.  It was a real challenge but we have all achieved the outcome which was to create an original imaginative story.

Our historical figure that we have learned about this week was James Young.  One of our local high schools is named after him so it was great to find out about why he is so famous and important.  Ask your child to tell you one fact about James Young.

Next week in class we are going to be joined by Mrs Lauder who is a student teacher and she will work with our class for the next five weeks.  We can’t wait to showcase our amazing learning to her.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Currie

P1B news update

We have continued to learn the oa and ai sound. We want to be able to read and with these long vowels confidently.

We have been sorting sentences that have words with the oa and ai sound.

We have still like playing the dinosaur egg game to practise listening for the ai, oa, ee and oo sounds.

http://www.ictgames.com/dinosaurEggs_phonics/index.html

It is really important that we only practise these sounds on the dinosaur egg game as we haven’t learned the others yet.

The cvc balloon pop game is also good practise too.

http://www.ictgames.com/cvcPop.html

Lucy- In writing we wrote imaginative stories, we had to pretend that we woke up in a castle.

Connor- We could choose to be a King, Queen, Knight, Jester, Prince or Princess.

Emilie- We had to write about what the character wore, how they felt and what they ate.

Julian- I was a King in my story and I felt happy.

Shakti- I was a beautiful princess in my story.

Word Boost

The word Boost story this week was

How to Grow a Dinosaur

Emileigh-Rose- Rip was a boost word this week. If you rip something you tear it without being careful.

Lily- Scatter was a boost word this week. If you scatter things you throw them or drop them so that they spread out.

Adam- Gigantic was a boost word this week. If something is gigantic it is very very big.

Joshua- Glare was a boost word this week. If you glare at someone you look at them with an angry face.

Shay- We are now learning all about subtraction.

We really enjoyed singing the subtract with a pirate song.

It helped us understand what subtraction is and what happens when you subtract. We also learned language linked to subtraction- subtract, minus, takeaway, find the difference.

Szymon- We played different subtraction games.

Here are some of them so we can play at home.

http://www.abcya.com/subtraction_game.htm

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=SpringNumber Choose Match addition and subtraction to the answer. Complete within 5 or within 10.

Within 20 is a big challenge!

Khyla- When we take numbers away they get smaller.

Sophie- We pretended we were the teacher; we hid 10 counters under the sheet and told our group how many we subtracted. Our group had to guess how many were left over?

Courtney- We played ten pin bowling, you had to knock some over the pins and then write the subtraction calculation on the whiteboard.”

Isla- We have started to learn about weather in Spanish this week. We learned new words for the different types of weather and sang some songs.

For topic we learned how to identify 2 different types of evidence which can tell us about the past.

We learned the historians, find evidence to learn about the past too.

Miss Boyes read us the story Hamish McHaggis and The Great Glasgow Adventure.

In this story Hamish and his friends, have to make up clues for a treasure hunt. To do this they visit different museums in Glasgow, we think museums would be a great place to find evidence about the past because they have artefacts.

We also think that you could learn about the past from…

“newspapers”

“photos”

“the internet”

“books at the library”

“visitor centres”

We looked in non-fiction books to learn about Castle life in the past.

Connor- Non-fiction books tell us real facts.

Miss Boyes challenged us to find different pictures in the books.

Emilie- They have a contents page and an index which tells you where to find specific information in the book.

We have decided to design a museum about ourselves, of all of our favourite things.

Also this week we were learning about symmetry through art. We looked at pieces of art, buildings and animals which were symmetrical and then we created symmetrical stain glass windows by using different coloured tissue paper. We will look at symmetry in more depth soon.

Look at our twitter page for photos. @_MissBoyes

Have a lovely weekend from Miss Boyes and P1B!

Nursery News

Fun filled freezing week, but what have we learned this week?

Children have been investigating the properties of water. They found a block pf ice in the garden and we brought it indoors to see how it would melt and break up. Children used their problem solving skills and curiosity to explore different ways to melt the ice. Some tried scissors, others’ tried sticks or our plastic dinosaurs. We then decided to do an experiment. What would happen if we put some items in water and left them outside? Great discussion and investigation on Friday as we found our items frozen in the ice!! The afternoon children will find their items on Monday.

Tooth brushing started on Monday each child has their own toothbrush and follows the Childsmile programme, they are learning to identify their own name on the list to be able to find their own brush.

From our Chinese New Year display in nursery children have been attempting to write in Chinese .Parker could see that the writing has straight lines and tried to copy them himself.

P.E this week was Gymnastics. The full hall gym equipment was out as the children developed balancing skills, climbing skills, jumping skills and remembered to have squashy knees as they jumped down onto the mat.

Have a great weekend everyone !! from the Nursery Team xx
