Nursery News

This week in nursery we have met our buddies, gone on a bug hunt and looked for signs of Spring. Thursday was windy ! The weather is certainly colder! The children have been using our outdoor literacy to decide what the weather is like in the garden.

Amelie was so excited to meet her buddy on Monday and show her around the nursery.

Sophie celebrated her birthday on Monday, Mrs Mushet was happy!!

On Tuesday we visited the library and brought back a book about a scared spider.

This gave us an idea to look for bugs on our welly walk this week.

We found spiders, slugs and a centipede. There were signs of Spring in woods, we saw flowers beginning to grow and will check next week to see if they have flowered.

The afternoon children decided to make signs on the path “so we know which way to come back” They used chalk to draw signs on the path and then discovered that they could make patterns in the mud with their wellies too.

We celebrated Mahnoor’s birthday on Thursday in the nursery.

and Friday?? fun fun fun and PEEPs to end off the week xx

Have a lovely weekend everybody. Snow is  forecast so wrap up warm !!

P2 Update

Happy World Book Day everyone!

We had a great time in class during World Book Day making book marks and drawing our favourite characters.  We even got to choose some new books for our class.

#

This is one of our new books.

We made bunting out of our drawings of our favourite books/characters.

In numeracy we have been learning about estimating numbers on a number line.  Try out this online game using the link. Try estimating within 0 – 10 to start with and then increase this to 100 if you feel confident.  Have fun.

https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/37/placing-numbers-on-a-number-line

In Literacy we have started using a new writing resource called PM writing.  This is going to help us learn how to complete functional pieces of writing.  This week we are focusing on a recount.  We have already learned about the structure of a recount; title, orientation, sequence of events and personal comment.  Next week we are going to be writing our own recount of what we do in the morning before we come to school.

For science we have explored our senses and had great fun completing a range of activities prepared for us by Mrs Lauder.  The taste test was interesting as we had to first taste with our noses pinched and then taste again with out it pinched…what a difference it made!  The feeling/touch test really made us think how much we rely on this sense because we firstly had to feel in the box wearing a rubber glove and then do it again without a glove!  Fabulous learning through discovery.

Have a lovely week.

Phonics

We have had a revision week of the sounds we have been learning this week in phonics. We have focusing on the digraph sounds we have learned. We know that a digraph is 2 letters which go together to make 1 sound. Here are the songs for these sounds we have been learning:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIY9ms1Nm2E

Next week, we are going to be learning another digraph the ‘wh’ sound as well as the ‘j’ sound. We will be doing a lots of work on the difference between ‘w’ and ‘wh’ and ‘j’ and ‘i’. Please talk to us about this at home.

Numeracy

We have been continuing to learn about subtraction in our numeracy lessons. We have been working hard using the vocabulary of before, after, more and less to help with our mental subtraction skills. We have been completing written subtraction number stories to put our use of these skills into practise. Here are some games to play at home to help you use these skills further:

Our castle topic has came to an end now and Mrs Davenport is so impressed with how much we have learned during this topic. Next week is British Science Week and we will be beginning a science topic which will take us up to the Easter holidays. Our new topic is all about Space.

There is no pupil voice this week as today we were too busy preparing for our banquet! Don’t forget to look on twitter for lots of photos and thanks again for coming along this morning.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Davenport and P1D.

Nursery News

What a busy week for St Ninian’s nursery!

Our boys and girls are really embracing our new word boost words and trying hard to understand them. There have been lots of lovely thoughts and ideas of what words mean and how they sound, this is growing week by week! The word boost words for this week were;

CREAK

DISCOVER

GIGGLE

SHIVER

Please support your child’s learning at home by using these words regularly and encouraging them to be adventurous with their vocabulary 🙂

Moving on from the word boost work this week – the children showed interest in making words and letters out of wool. Some children even moved on to using the sounds they know to spell out the word ‘LUV’ – fantastic ways to experience and experiment with early phonics!

Our welly wednesday was a focus on finding signs of spring on the back of the very UN-Scottish weather we have experienced this week (which has been a welcomed delight!).  We found lots of green shoots and some pockets of colour that made us very happy! We also had a chat about picking flowers after seeing some had been picked and left lying.. we decided to rescue them and bring them back to nursery to put them in water! We seen a duck wandering through the trees which sparked lots of questions; what is it doing? Where is it going? More than all of this – we continue to learn to be responsible in our local environment on Welly Wednesday – taking opportunities to keep ourselves and others safe.

On Thursday we had a great time working with P5 in gym where we were learning to make baskets with our hands to catch a various assortment of items. We love working with P5 and learned a new term ‘underarm throw’, when we threw things back to our friends in P5.

Friday always comes around too quickly – but we went to the hall and had fun being dingle dangle scarecrows, using our bodies in different ways to flip, flop and wobble.

PEEP class this involved meeting our new puppet – an old lady (not Mrs Beattie…) who was telling us all about her eating habits! Swallowing spiders, flies… sounds yummy, no? We learned a Spring song and banged a big drum in time to share with everyone how special we are and our own name. We love PEEP – Bang, Bang, Bang!

Have a lovely weekend!

Teacher voice:

PM Writing

We started to use a new literacy resource this week which will help us with our reading, grammar and writing. We learned all about nouns and verbs using a Recount genre. We discussed the important features of a recount in preparation for writing a recount next week with Mrs Roy and Mrs Scott.

At one point all the upper area classes and teachers were having a debate about nouns – it was hilarious!!!

Health and Wellbeing

Sleep has been the topic of the week and we have had 2 lessons and an assembly now about this. We did a questionnaire about our own sleep patterns and then looked at some of the science connected to sleep. We made notes using sub-headings and then turned our notes into a report as a piece of extended writing. Mrs Roy is going to try and follow some of the advice, ie. No screen time for the hour leading up to bedtime!!!!

Sorry I forgot to give out the praise postcard it was a bit manic!! Remind me on Monday!!!!

THANKS FOR TUNING IN WITH P6/7, HAVE A NICE FRIDAY EVENING!!

P2 Update

This week P2 have been amazing scientists.  They have been learning about GERMS.  They completed an investigation in how germs can be spread.  Christopher was our willing volunteer to be infected (hand gel and glitter mixture) on his hand and then he had to shake hands with someone in class.  We observed how the germs spread from one person to another.  We discussed how to sneeze hygienically, into a tissue or into the inside of our elbow.  We also talked about good hand washing.  We then became GERM BUSTERS and wrote some rules on how to reduce the spread of germs.  Super learning!

In numeracy we continued to look at fractions and we worked on finding half of a given amount.  We used our division (sharing) skills the we learned recently to help us do this.

In literacy we have been using ‘peer assessment’ in our reading, we have been listening to each other and giving positive feedback.  The children have also been using the traffic light system to self-assess their own performance in reading, they have been using the traffic light stamper in their green diary.

For Number Talks we have been using Maths Splats to discuss and share our strategies.  This involves counting a number of dots in a random pattern (when counting we look for dice patterns and we use a variety of strategies such as counting in 2s) and then a number of the dots get covered by a splat.  We have to work out how many are under the splat and explain how we worked it out.  Have a go at this one.

Have a lovely weekend.
