P5D Weekly News!

This week in P5D we have been busy writing a recount about Archbishop Cushley’s visit. We made sure that we had all the key features of a recount in our finished piece of work. These included a title, an orientation, a sequence of events and a personal comment. We enjoyed getting to share some of our finished pieces with Mrs Smith.

In PE, we were focussing on hill sprints as there is a big hill on our cross country route and on our daily mile route. We had to walk, jog and sprint throughout the route.

We have been learning all about building resilience and know that our lives are not always perfect and easy to manage. Sometimes we have challenges to face and there will always be ups and downs. We have been looking at how to manage our emotions and how we can deal with different situations we may be faced with. We have made short films using i-movie to show how life is like a river.

We have enjoyed our second session of bikeability this week. We have been cycling around the track and trying to take one hand off the handles bars while going round the cones. We were also doing a slow race again this week. Congratulations to Aaron, Maliha and Hasan who could not ride a bike without stabilisers before but who are all now riding free.

In maths, we have been learning all about equivalent fractions. These are fractions that are equal. You can find equivalent fractions but multiplying the top and bottom number by the same number or dividing them.

In art this week, we have been focussing on using line and following a step by step guide on how to draw The Eiffel Tower. We aim to get this completed next week and will share some of the finished articles with you.

“I am proud of myself for learning how to ride a bike!” – Maliha

“I really enjoyed making a movie using i-movie and I hope we can do it again!” – Zuzanna

“I am so proud of myself that I can actually ride a bike with pedals now and I am no longer afraid!” – Aaron

“I have enjoyed maths, making groups from different amounts!” – Sophie R

“I enjoyed doing the Eiffel Tower art this week!” – Morgan

“I enjoyed writing a recount about Archbishops Cushley’s visit!” – Ola

“I really enjoyed doing the slow race in bikeability!” – Andrew

Congratulations to Aaron and Sophie R this week who received our praise postcards. Aaron for super focus in writing and applying his learning to his independent tasks and Sophie for her hard work, determination as well as having a positive attitude in maths. Well done Aaron and Sophie R!

NURSERY NEWS

The new furniture and resources have been well received by the children in the nursery. The atmosphere is very calm and the children are embracing the new learning experiences and life skills available to them. Children are now responsible for their own snack and wash their own dishes when they are finished snack. This promotes independence and confident individuals.

Transition this week gave each child making the move to school the experience of playing in the P1 classrooms. The children interacted with the P1 children and were all very comfortable in their new surroundings.

Welly Wednesday was fun this week, we were litter picking and taking care of our local environment. We also had the chance to look for signs of Spring in out local woods. We found Daffodils growing and a bumble bee!

Natural resources and independence of thinking is preparing our children to be responsible citizens of the future and successful learners at school.

Have a lovely weekend everybody!!!

P2 Update

Here is a snap shot of our learning this week;

Our newly resourced playroom is now in use and we are loving all the new experiences we are having.

For maths this week we have been learning the names of 3D shapes and we worked out which shapes roll because they have curved sides.

In Numbertalks this week we have used the rekenreks.  We have been working out how many swooshes it takes to make a number.  It has been a lot of fun and it is great to use the huge Rekenrek to share strategies with the whole group.

We had our class mass on Tuesday and it was beautiful.  The readers did very well reading the Bidding Prayer and we all sang our prepared hymns with enthusiasm.  Well done everyone.

We used this experience of going to mass to help us learn further how to write a recount.  We all recalled the order of events from Tuesday morning when we went to mass and then wrote a recount of this.  It was great to see all the details the we remembered!

As it was the end of National Science week on 17th March we finished our Science learning by looking at Stephen Hawking.  We used a book we bought as a class during World Book Day and learned who Stephen Hawking is and what he is famous for in the field of Science.  It was great to hear Leon’s own knowledge of Blackholes too!  What super facts Leon, thanks for sharing.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Currie

P2 Weekly Update

This week have had to say goodbye to Mrs Lauder.  She has spent the last six weeks with us in class helping us with our learning, especially in Science.  She is not fully leaving us though as she will be back after Easter to work with our P7 class.  Good luck Mrs Lauder.

This week we have been learning how to write a recount using our new resource PM writing.  We all decided to recount what we do in the morning when we are getting ready for school.  We have learned to include an orientation, sequence of events and a personal comment. The results have been fabulous and our star writers this week are Victoria and Eve.  Well done girls.

For numeracy we continued to develop our skills of estimating.  We have been trying to place numbers on a number line which only gives us the starting and ending number.  This has proved tricky but we have been practising really hard and using some interactive games to help us.  Try this one out.

https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/37/placing-numbers-on-a-number-line

Stay, Play and Be Well was a huge success in our class.  It was so lovely to see everyone and it is always special for the children to share their learning and classroom environment with their families.  Thank you again for the huge turn out.

Next week we have our class mass on Tuesday at 9.30am in the small chapel at the Lanthorn.  This is open to all to attend.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Currie

Phonics

In phonics we have been learning the ‘wh’ sound and the ‘j’ sound. We have been listening really carefully to the difference between the wh and w sounds in words. The wh sound is a digraph. That means it is 2 letters which make 1 sound. We have been working on some activities this week to help us differentiate between the j and i sounds when we write them as this can be a bit tricky. The j sound is a green sound. This means that it comes from more than 1 part of our mouth.

Numeracy

We have been continuing to learn about subtraction. We are also beginning to look at the differences between addition and subtraction and how we can use our knowledge of addition to help us with subtraction and vice versa. We know how important it is to look for the plus or minus symbols in a number story sentence.

Maths

We have been continuing to look at symmetry in our environment and make symmetrical pictures. Look for some symmetry homework next week so we can show you how much we have learned with this topic.

Topic

We are loving our new topic of space so far. We helped Miss Lydon to create a topic plan where we shared our ideas of what we want to learn during this topic. We have already helped to build a space station in our classroom and we have been having lots of fun playing in it already!

Our Classroom

Today in class, Mrs Davenport told us about the exciting plans to change our classroom a bit. On Monday, we won’t have our own chair anymore! There will only be 1 teaching table and lots of areas in the classroom for us to explore and extend our learning  and imaginations further through play. We are very excited for this change. On Monday, we also welcome a new classmate into our class. Her name is Cordelle and we got to meet her on Thursday. We look forward to seeing Cordelle again on Monday.

Miss Lydon

Today was Miss Lydon’s last day in our class. We have loved having Miss Lydon in our class and we all think she will be a fantastic teacher! We are going to miss having her in our room but we are very pleased we will still see her when she is working with P6/7 and Mrs Roy after the holidays. P6/7 are very lucky.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Davenport and P1D

P1B news update!

Phonics

This week we were revising some of our sounds.

Emilie- We have been checking our learning of wh and ng.

“I know that ‘whiskers’ has the wh sound.”

Lily- We have been checking our learning of the j sound.

“I know that ‘Jam’ started with j.”

Liam- “I noticed that the ng sound is normally at the end of the word. It is at the end of the word  swing.”

Writing

Adam – “We were writing a recipe for How to Make Rice Crispy Cakes.”

Julian- “I tried to sound out the word chocolate.”

Joshua- “We had to include the openers from the mighty writer board.”

Emilie- “Our recipe had to be in order so that people knew when to do each part.”

Lucy- “We drew a picture of the ingredients.”

In numeracy this week we have been using our addition and subtraction skills to complete fact families.

Isla- We use 3 numbers to make 2 adding sums and 2 take away sums.

If we had the numbers 5, 2 and 7

Liam- We could do 5 + 2 = 7

Syzmon- We could do 2 + 5 = 7

Joanna- 7 – 2 = 5

Joshua- 7 – 5 = 2

We enjoyed playing the fact families game on the smartboard.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/number-facts/number-fact-families

Choose option up to 10 or if you find this easy choose option up to 20 for a challenge!

We also extended our knowledge of subtraction by using it to complete missing number calculations.

If it said       – 2 = 8

We can play this game at home to work out missing number calculations.

http://flash.topmarks.co.uk/4728

Lily- You start at the 8 and work back the way to add the 2. This will help you find the answer which is 10.

In Science this week we have been learning we have enjoyed making moon sand, we used our problem solving skills to figure out how to measure and mix the ingredients.

We have been learning about the rotation of the Earth in relation to the sun. We used a torch to face the globe. We rotated the globe and pointed out that when 1 half of Earth is illuminated the other is in darkness.

We have been making pictures to represent the sun shining onto the earth to make it daytime.

Our learning in science led us to ask how close Earth and other planets are to the sun. So we decided to make our own solar system using the play dough.

Head over to our twitter page to see the photos.

P5D Weekly Update

In P5D we have been working very hard this week. We have been continuing with our work on PM writing, still focussing on recounts. We have learned that the key features of a recount are a title, orientation, sequence of events and personal comment. We have been focussing on nouns and pronouns, past tense verbs and using sequential language.

We have also had the chance to do an extended piece of writing this week all about what we have learned during our sleep Scotland lessons. We are all full of very important information so why not ask us to share this with you.

We are enjoying using our new reading resource which focuses on our understanding of what we have read. Getting to use the answer cards to assess ourselves is one of the perks.

We enjoyed our class trip to the library this week. We got to pick another book of our choice and enjoyed having the chance to read some of these in the library whilst sheltering from the crazy hail and windy weather.

In maths, we have been learning about decimal numbers. We have been reading scales with decimals and placing decimal numbers on number lines. This has been quite difficult as we have had to work out what each increment represents.

On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, and for the next 2 weeks, we will be participating in a bike ability course. This week we have learned how to do ‘M checks’ to ensure they are fit for purpose, how to put the bike down properly to avoid any damage to the chain and how to use our brakes properly. We had lots of fun activities like a slow race, emergency stop and the cone colour game to make sure our heads were looking up and not down towards the ground.

We got to support some of our classmates and watch the Glee performance of their 2 songs which they participated with in a competition this week.

“They sang beautifully!” – Zuzanna

“They worked well as a team,” – Hasan

“My favourite song was Proud Mary!” – Andrew

We enjoyed our stay, play and be well session this week where we got to showcase some of the HWB activities we have been doing in class. Thank you to the parents/families who were able to come in and join us.

We had the opportunity to join the nursery again this week for 10minutes of their PE lesson helping them develop their throwing and catching skills. In our own PE lesson we have been doing team cross country relay.

Congratulations to Calvin this week who has been awarded our praise postcard for good teamwork and being ready to learn :)!

Have a great weekend, P5D and Miss Diamond.
