SOCKtober

A message from The School Bank

Have you heard of SOCKtober? Well this is our spin on SOCKtober… virtually all of the uniform packs we provide to our local children who need a helping hand with the cost of the school day include brand new socks and/or brand new tights. This October we would like to ask if you could donate a pack of Socks or Tights to help us with our packs over the coming weeks. We need:
1. Socks size infant 9 right up to adult size 12 in preferably grey or black but any colour is fine.
2. Tights age 5-12 years (grey or black) and tights age 12-18 years or ladies size small/medium/large (black only) would be wonderful.

We appreciate all donations  – we are delighted with any support you can give us during our SOCKtober campaign.

Socks can be handed into St Ninian’s school office and then will be collected by a member of The School Bank Team.

Thank you 😍😍😍😍😍

European Handball Federation Challenge Cup this weekend

Please find below a flier for Livingston v Dicken (Finland) Handball Clubs who are competing in the European Handball Federation Challenge Cup this weekend. The matches take place this Saturday and Sunday at Oriam with 5pm and 2pm starts respectively. These are the first European club matches to take place in Scotland in over 20 years and, with a number of former West Lothian school pupils taking part, it would be great if you could share with students in your schools that might be interested in this opportunity to attend such high level matches. Tickets can be bought on the day for £2 (adults) and £1 (children).

P2/1 Update

This week we have started our new science topic, our first focus is Wonderful Water.  We have learned about water turning into a gas when it is heated up.  We used our observational skills to watch a kettle boil and we noticed a gas coming out of the kettle as well as the water inside the kettle moving and bubbling.  At first we thought the gas coming out of the kettle was smoke but we then learned that it is actually still water but it had changed state into steam.  We have also used this topic to inspire us in art too.  We looked at a George Seurat painting of a boat on the water and we noticed that he used an art technique called pointillism (lots of dots of paint) to create his picture.  We had a go at using the technique pointillism to paint a picture of a boat on the sea.  We used a cotton bud to make the dots of paint.  The colours we used were red, blue and yellow, and learned that these were the primary colours.  We were all very proud of our pictures.

P2 – In Numeracy we have continued to look at number sequences up to 100.  We based a lot of learning on the board game Snakes and Ladders.  This helped us to start at any number within 100 and continue to count.  We found starting on a number which we then had to bridge the decade the trickiest.  For extra practise try counting on from 59 up to 79.  In Literacy we have been using the word boost book “Billy Monsters Daymare”, the boost words are; gloomy, tiny, wail, soothe and stroke.  For a challenge try to use one of these words when you are having a conversation.  For spelling we focused on ‘ai’ words, we used our outdoor learning time on Thursday to complete a word hunt around the playground (Mrs Currie had hidden ai words for us to find and we had to write them on our whiteboards.)  For our reading comprehension work we explored characters from our reading books and completed a profile for them.

P1 – In Numeracy we have continued to consolidate our knowledge and understanding of the numbers to 10.  Through our play room investigations we were ordering numbered lollisticks by sticking them into play doh and we have been counting pictures and matching them to the correct numeral using peg cards.  We have also been improving our written formation of the numbers too.  At home for extra practise try writing the numbers 0 – 10.  In Literacy we have learned the three sounds c, k and ck, we have discussed where we see and hear these sounds in a word and we have found out the ck doesn’t start words it only comes at the end of a cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant).  We used our outdoor learning time to consolidate this using large letter cards to build words.

Have a lovely weekend

P1 News

Literacy

This week we have been learning about the ‘k’ and ‘ck’ sounds. The ‘ck’ sound is a tricky one. We use this sound when the ‘c’ sound is at the end of the word. We have been using this rule to help us read and spell words this week. Listen to the ‘k’ song below:

We have been using our velcro mats to spell words and some of us have even started spelling words in our learning journals. We have all been working on our formation of the ‘k’ sound. It is quite tricky but we are remembering to draw a straight line, then from the middle of the line kick up and then go back to the middle and kick down. We were also working on our reading skills this week and trying to find the correct word for a picture.

What is the correct spelling – cat or ckat. Why?

Image result for sick clipart

What is the correct spelling – sick or sik. Why?

We put up a word document on the netbooks and had a go and typing. We were able to spot some sounds we know on the keyboard.

We also played this game on the netbooks too:

Numeracy

We have been continuing to work on counting with 1-1 correspondence, matching the numeral to the value and number formation. We enjoyed playing lots of games to reinforce our learning this week and we have also started number talks. During number talks we are learning about the make-up of a number. E.g. 4 is also 3 and 1 or 2 and 2. So far, we have focused on numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4. Next week we will look at 5 and 6.

We were introduced to subitising this week too. This is when you need to try to figure out the number of objects without counting them. Check out this song we used:

Here are some links to the games we have been using on the smart board or net books this week:

Primary 5 Weekly Update

We have had a busy week in P5.

In PE, we have been continuing to work on our basketball skills to help us when we go to a basketball tournament. We learned some more skills including defending and trying to get better at dribbling the ball and move faster when we have it.

“It was very fun learning how to do basketball more.” – Madison

“We have been trying our best on our basket skills for the tournament.” – Ahmad

In maths, we have been focussing on the value of each digit in big numbers. We have been doing a variety of different activities to help us learn.

“I liked doing the place value game outside where we had to make numbers using markers.” – Alishba

“I liked doing the written task where I had to break the numbers down!” – Filip

“I like getting to ick what activity I wanted to do at any time.” – Alan

We have also been learning bout 3D shapes and looking at their properties.

“I enjoyed building 3D shapes using art straws and playdoh.” – Julia C

As part of our smart start activities we had to send an email to share our favourite colours with someone else in our class.

“I sent my email to Aaron, it was good fun!” – Leo

“I liked having a conversation on my email with Harry and James because I have done t before but not actually had a conversation with everyone on it.” – Wojtek

We had another free writing Friday session where we wrote about dogs, animals, formula 1, haircuts and lots more!

We continued with James and the Giant Peach this week and learned some new vocabulary. Some of these words were: serenely, aghast, pandemonium, frantic and colossal.

In PM writing we have been learning all about ‘Narrative’ texts. We learned that the key features of this type of text are a title, the orientation, the complication and the resolution. It has to be written in the past tense and we tried to include adverbs in our writing to make it more interesting.

“I liked doing PM writing because we wrote a story together as a class which had an orientation, a complication and a resolution all about a Formula 1 race.”

We hope you have a great weekend, P5 and Miss Diamond.

NURSERY NEWS

We hope you all enjoyed your holiday weekend!

This week in nursery found us outdoors having great fun using open ended resources to create risky play and fun experiences to develop our gross motor skills, social development and our thinking.

Tyres and drain pipes were very popular. Some piling them high to make a” Tyre chimney”. This provided a great way of experimenting with sound and echo.

Others used them to roll and crawl inside for fun. The tubing was a great media to experiment with size and measurement. The children found items small and big to fit inside the tubes and roll down to the bottom.

Inside the nursery children were making “pizza” this week using the magnetic triangle shapes. Great discussion then started as to what they like on there Pizza and what shapes were created whilst adding them together. This was a great mathematical experience for the children including counting, fractions and shape recognition. The children then had the experience of going out into the community to buy Pizza for snack from the local shop. We had to keep ourselves safe on the walk there and look around the shelves for what wee needed. We then gave money to the cashier to pay for our items.

The children were gathered around to discuss the shape and how many pieces we would have if we kept cutting it into slices. The best part had to be getting to eat it !!

Invitations were given out this week for our McMillan coffee morning next week. You are all invited back to share a coffee and cake to raise money for this great cause on Thursday at 11.30 for AM children and 1.15 for the PM children. Full day children cn come along on either of the session that suit best.

PLEASE BE AWARE WE HAVE A CHILD JOINING OUR NURSERY FAMILY THIS WEEK WITH SEVERE ALLERGIES. PLEASE BE VIGILANT IN WHAT FOODS ARE IN THEIR LUNCH BOXES AND BAGS. ANY FOODS MUST NOT CONTAIN- NUTS, ALL DAIRY, CARROT, BANANA, LENTILS,  YELLOW SPLIT PEAS, PEAS, CELERY OR EGG.

If you have any concerns or questions relating to this please contact a member of the Nursery Team who will be happy to assist.

Have a lovely weekend everybody from the Nursery Team!!

NEXT WEEK

MONDAY –

TUESDAY – LIBRARY VISIT- am and pm. Please come dressed in clothing appropriate for the weather conditions.

WEDNESDAY –

THURSDAY – McMILLAN COFFEE MORNING, all families welcome at 11.30 am or 1.15 pm in the Nursery. Any donations most gratefully received.

FRIDAY – PEEP SESSION 1 at 11 am with Mrs Beattie.

P2/1 Update

P2/1 have used their Author study of Julia Donaldson to link up their learning.  They have all learned and written some facts about Julia Donaldson and then they used her story of The Stickman to help them develop their skill of retelling a story.  We used her story Paper Dolls to help us strengthen and develop our fine motor skills, we have all created our own set of paper dolls which involved us having to fold the paper and then cut out one doll that when you opened it out it created a series of dolls holding hands.

In  Numeracy we have been focusing on the number before and after up to 100.  We have been using 100 squares to help us with this.  When we use the 100 square we have discovered that we can see patterns within the numbers; the last column going down shows us the decade numbers etc.

In class we have been using “I Love Literacy” and “I Love Numeracy” practical tasks to help us consolidate our learning by using many different skills and learning techniques.  Ask us to explain some of our tasks to you and how we complete these within our school day.

Have a lovely long weekend,

Mrs Currie

Primary 7 News!

What a busy week! I feel like we have earned our long weekend after this week!

It was a big week for our class as we prepared for our first class mass of the year. We used our lolly sticks to assign jobs, having them on a first come, first served basis – some of the jobs we needed doing were readers, offertory, slideshow technicians and music technicians! Father Simon thanked the class for a lovely mass 🙂

Writing this week was a roaring success as we wrote free verse poetry from the viewpoint of Auggie and Via from our class novel, Wonder. A few examples were posted to twitter and some others were added to our wall display.

A huge thank you to the families who came along to our ‘Meet the Family’ event on Thursday evening! Mrs Scott and I enjoyed meeting, chatting and getting to know you all 🙂 if you weren’t able to make it, I have popped some information home with the children today for you to enjoy together over the weekend! A wee reminder about our family photo challenge for the September weekend;

After experimenting with QR codes (and getting it to work!) – I would also like to share this SWAY presentation for some top tips for P7 – click on the image below to view it 😉

As always – you can follow our adventures on twitter; https://twitter.com/Mrs_Conway10

Homework begins again from next week – issued on a Wednesday, handed in on a Tuesday!

Have a fab long weekend!
