Primary 6/7 Weekly News

Learning Across the Curriculum
Evie, Adrin, Aidan, Zuzanna and Aaron.

This week we have been working with Marty the robot, we had to use a computer to navigate/programme him to do what we want. Some of the options we had to choose from were Kick, Walk Forward, Wiggle, Circle Dance and Walk Backwards. There is a video of Marty on our class Twitter.

During P.E we split up into different groups of our choice, Indoor Fitness or Outdoor Rugby. In rugby we did passing work and contact games, and in fitness we did Agility, Endurance and Strength.

Learning in Literacy
Louise, Kacper, Shannon, Ethan, Levente

This week in reading primary 7 have been reading Skellig ,its about a boy who moved house but stayed at the same school but found a strange creature in the garage. We had to answer challenging questions using our higher order thinking skills. Primary 6 have been reading Kensuke’s Kingdom and learning about sailing around the world! It sounds like a big adventure and we can’t wait to read the next chapter of our book.

In writing this week we worked in groups to create Halloween poems. We had to think of our own rhyming scheme and use lots of figurative language that we have been working on. When we finished we typed up our poems and we also recorded them and added sound effects.

Learning in Numeracy
Ailie, Kasia, Mark, Joseph, Hasan, Robbie

This  week in Math/numeracy the primary sevens had Mrs McDonald and we did bar modelling. Tt was very hard and confusing.

On Wednesday we learned how to use a compass. We drew circles with a  compass. We were given the radius or diameter to help us.

On Thursday we  did adding and subtracting strings of numbers and calculating mentally.

Robbie and Ethan used the tens hundreds and units to do addition and subtraction.

Skills for Learning, Life and Work
Ola, Jan, Emma, Oliwier, Joshua, Huda

Our class this week used many skills in all of our work. The four most important skills that we used this week where:

Teamwork: we used team work when programming Marty the robot together we had to use our individual skills in a group to program Marty to do different things and actions such as dance, kicking a ball and many other commands.

Creativity: we all used creativity when writing our Halloween poems. we had to come up with rhymes connected to Halloween to make a great Halloween poem. We then added our voice to a recording and added sound effects to give it a more Spooky effect.

Perseverance: We used the skill of perseverance to create lots of circles with a compass with many different diameters and radius. Many of these did not match the given radius or diameter so we had to keep going and trying.

Higher order thinking skills: We used these skills to find in depth answers to our reading question the amount of evidence and quotes gave us marks. To get high marks we had to find many different things to prove our answer.

P5 Weekly Update

It has been a busy week in P5!

One of the highlights of our week was getting to use Marty the Robot. We had to use Scratch to program him and make him move. We hope to make a music video and make him dance by the end of our Marty project.

“He was really fun to play with!” – Filip

“I enjoyed making him dance; he ended up in the splits at the end!” – Maeve

“On Scratch we had lots of different commands that we could use to make Marty dance. My favourite was the splits and the circle move!” – Angelina

In maths we have been learning about symmetry. We were outside using hoops and natural materials to create symmetrical patterns and have been looking at lines of symmetry in shapes. We developed our learning further through an art lesson where we had to complete an animal drawing ensuring it was symmetrical.

“ I liked drawing the other half of the cat, it was really hard but that’s fine!” – Alishba

“I liked doing the white tiger and it has so much detail on it! I liked how it looked when I was finished!” – Wojtek

“I liked it when I had to do the hair on the face because I had to add texture!” – Harry

In PE, we were focussing on our fitness. We used playing cards and dice. If you rolled a 6, your partner got to choose what exercise you had to do 6 of. When we used the cards, each suit meant a different exercise! A joker meant 30 press ups.

“I liked it because nearly every time you got a different exercise to do!” – Marcus

“It was a competition so whoever got the most cards won! My team won!” – Maeve

“It was fun to play with because of the competition! My team had the least players and we didn’t get the joker!” – Ahmad

We have tried to incorporate more free play into our daily routine. We are taking it very seriously and have demonstrated that we can be trusted to complete our learning activities and have some free play at the same time.

“It is fun and we are getting more time to actually play with our friends!” – Ahmad

“I think it is a really good decision because it gets us away from our devices!” – Angelina

“I really like free play and I like that I can play with my friends and play board games!” – Oma

“Having time to play when we are learning helps us learn and focus more and have a growth mind-set!” – Annayah

Have a great weekend, P5 and Miss D!

P1 News

Literacy

We haven’t been learning any new sounds this week as we are now finished learning our first set of sounds. We have been using our knowledge of these sounds to read and spell words. We have also been working on our letter formation, this is something you could practise at home too.

We are developing our writing skills. We know that sentences need a capital letter; a full stop and finger spaces between words – you will be very impressed at our Stay, Play and Write on Tuesday.

Numeracy

In number talks we have been finding as many different ways as possible to make the numbers 5, 6 and 7. We were using our fingers to show these amounts.

5 can be 5 and 0, 4 and 1 or 3 and 2.

How many ways can you find to show 6 and 7?

Our numeracy focus this week has been ordinal numbers – first, second third etc. and putting numbers into a sequence.

What numbers are missing in these sequences?

0, 1, ____, 3, ____, 5, 6 ____, 8, ____, _____

10, 9, ____, ____, ____, 5, 4, ____, ____, 1 ____

Did you see our tweets for Maths Week?

IDL

We have started to learn some Spanish. This week we learned how to say ‘hello’ in Spanish. We played a game whilst listening to this song. When the song was playing, we were walking around the classroom, when the music stopped we found someone to say ‘Hola’ to.

We were learning that plants are living things just like animals. We spoke about what plants need to survive. We were very excited to plant our own seeds and we have checked on them every day – making sure we water them. Can you remember what type of seeds they were?

Our Learning Highlights of the Week

Anaiya: I liked numbers because I liked doing the number 1.

Joanna: I liked doing numbers and the number 2.

Sylvia: I liked number work and learning my numbers.

Grace: In number work I was counting seahorses. There were 7. For 7 it is – across the sky and down from heaven, now I’ve made the number 7.

Carly: I liked getting the golden ticket because I done great work. I had to do the numbers in the right order.

Lucy: I counted how many leaves we collected outside. I got 7.

Kian: I liked learning how to count on from 10. You add to count on more. If there were 10 dots then 4 it would be 14.

Sophie J: I liked counting on from 10. If there were 10 and then 6 there would be 16.

Ethan: I liked number work and learning the number 10. 5 and 5 is 10.

Oliver: I liked counting backwards from 10 to 1.

Anna: I liked collecting the leaves and sort them out.

Nursery News

We are fast approaching the October break, but it hasn’t slowed the learning pace down!

This week we observed an abundance of fine motor development in Nursery. Children have opportunities to write using different media. Here we can see a child using a stick of chunky chalk to experiment with on a slate. Another child practices her cutting skills as she creates a beautiful border around her house she had drawn.

Mrs Beattie and Mrs Audsley introduced musical instruments on Tuesday. The children were developing listening skills and how to keep a beat to the music. All the children had a ball !!

It was our first Welly Wednesday of the session. The children loved running up and down the leaf covered hill and looked for signs of Autumn , we also had a look at the tree,s naming the parts of it with some help. They all listened to instructions and kept themselves safe on the walk there and back.

NEXT WEEK IN NURSERY

MONDAY- COME BACK AND COUNT

TUESDAY – COME BACK AND COUNT

WEDNESDAY- INDIVIDUAL PHOTOS

THURSDAY – COME BACK AND COUNT

FRIDAY – PEEPS 3

ALL FINISH FOR THE OCTOBER BREAK AND ALL RESUME MONDAY 21/10/19

Have a lovely weekend !!!

P2/1 Weekly Update

Most days in class near home time we have our Spanish learning time,  we have been learning some basic Spanish vocabulary, we have focused on saying hello and asking how someone is feeling.  To do this we have been using this catchy song.  Try it out at home.

P2 – For literacy this week we have started our PM writing programme of work.  This programme helps us focus on different types of genres and purposes for writing.  The genre we have looked at this week is a recount.  We read a recount by a little boy who had helped his mum in the house with some jobs.  This made us think about a time that we have helped someone and what we did to help them.  We have written a plan which includes a title, orientation, sequence of events and a personal comment.  Next week we are going to turn our plan into a full recount.  We have also focused on the spelling pattern _ay.  This makes the same sound as -ai-, so we learned that ay usually comes at the end of a word (there are always exceptions such as crayon) and ai in the middle of a word.  Watch this little teaching video, it gives us some good advice about adding tails onto words such as _ing or _ed or _ er, this is something we will be looking at in more depth over the course of P2.  For our reading our comprehension work was based on finding the title, author and blurb on the book.  Keep practising this at home everytime you are reading together.

P1 – In literacy P1 have been using the sounds they have learned to blend and make CVC words.  The phonic sounds we have learned are s, m, t, p, c, a, i, k and ck.  To learn to blend we have used our magnetic boards, written on whiteboards, jumped in lettered hoops and match pictures and words.  Try asking your child to either tell you the sounds or write the sounds they hear in the following words; mat, map, cat, cap, sit, sip.  For writing this week the children were thinking of something or someone who might be sitting on a mat and they wrote a short story and drew a picture of it.

P2 – In Numeracy for our learning about numbers to 100 we have been looking at counting backwards as well as identifying the largest/biggest number and the smallest number.  The children learned a dice game where you make one of the dice the tens die and the other the units (ones) die.  When you roll them you put the two digits side by side to make a two digit number, your opponent then repeats this and whoever gets the largest number wins a point (or takes a counter).  Have a go at this game at home.  For number talks we have been looking at dot patterns, the children are given some dots to count and we are trying to find efficient ways to count them.  They have realised that it can be quicker and easier to not lose count if you group them, however you have to be able to add the groups together as you go, that is the tricky part.  Have a go at this number talks;

P1 – For numeracy P1 have reached the number 10 and are now learning about forward and backward sequences when counting out loud.  Some children have started to group amounts into a bundle of ten and then count on from this to reach a total within 20.

For our IDL topic we have completed our learning about water by exploring the three states, solid, liquid and gas and we used our pupil voice to help us plan some activities.  Thanks to Isla’s question about how does water help food cook, we boiled pasta in class to see the changes and why they happened…we then got to taste it too!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Currie

P7 Weekly News

Happy Maths week!

Some of our maths week activities this week included looking at Tangrams, multi step word problems and negative numbers. Today we worked in groups to solve clues to find the culprit in our murder at the movies problem;

Tangrams proved super tricky – maybe it is easier using the online game?!

https://www.abcya.com/games/tangrams

Have a go as a family – which of you is the best problem solver?!

Our Risk Factory visit was exciting – all of P7 together!

We don’t want to say too much to keep the mystery alive for future classes.. but we were given the opportunity to react to a number of different scenarios;

What would your child do if they were in a house and a fire started?

What would they say if they had to phone 999, do they know what information they would need?

Can your child keep themselves safe by making safe choices and following safety information?

There were a number of interesting discussions had on the day – the fire brigade supplied us with leaflets, but we will continue to look into fire safety, especially in the run up to Bonfire Night.

Next week we will be presenting short 2 minute presentations on our animal science topic!

I can’t wait to hear them all 🙂

Some of us chose pieces of work for our WOW wall today – if you child has a device that they can bring to use in school, I can highly recommend downloading the OneNote app and logging in using their Glow login – it makes it much easier to access their profile. We have a range of devices in class that can also be used for this 🙂

Ambra is really proud of her Wonder drawing Aria is really proud of her Wonder poemAbi is really proud of the drawing she did for our class charter Ryan is really proud of his character study

Have a great weekend!

P5 Weekly News

We have been busy in P5 this week.

We have had lots of fun at the harvest festival where we were learning in collaboration with other primary schools including Bankton, Dedridge and Williamston about harvesting and what kind of foods are harvested in different countries.

“I enjoyed learning the song about a farmer during harvest time!” – Madison.

“I was a little bit nervous standing up in front of the other schools to present!” – Alan.

“Julia K and I got picked to go up with some other boys and girls from different schools and we had to make different words from H-A-R-V-E-S-T. – James.

“I enjoyed learning the song that we had to sing for the other schools, ‘The Harvest Song’. – Oma.

We continued with our basketball skills in PE this week but missed Mr McCurdy and we hope he feels better soon.

We enjoyed our trip to the Library this week and choosing a book to bring back to school.

“I chose ‘The Secret Diary of Kitty Cask’” – Wojtek

“I chose ‘Action Dogs Ocean of Pearls’” – Harry

As part of celebrating maths week, we worked in teams to solve a murder mystery challenge where we had to solve different clues using different mathematical processes.

“This was really tricky because there were lots of names on the suspect list!” – James

“I liked the murder mystery because we had to work out the different clues!” – Julia C.

We have also been learning about rounding and adjusting to help solve calculations mentally.

“I found this very hard to begin with but after practise I got used to the process.” – Angelina

“I thought it was fun but there was some bits that I got confused with.” – Ahmad

We have also been writing about the African Grassland. We wrote a narrative about an animal that you could find in the African Grassland and had to make sure we had an orientation, a complication and a resolution. We also tried to use adjectives and adverbs to add more detail and description in our writing.

“I wrote about a Zebra called Zack!” – Maeve.

“I wrote about an elephant called Cassie!” – Alishba.

“I wrote about a Gazelle called JJ!” – Olivia.

We hope you have a great weekend, Miss Diamond and P5!
