What a busy and eventful week in P2M! It is safe to say we are now well and truly in the Christmas spirit.
Firstly I would like to thank you all for bringing the children along to both the evening performances of the nativity, it was a fantastic turn out for both shows. Also, thank you very much for supporting the children by buying the tickets and watching the performances. We hope you enjoyed it as much we did. As you know, the nativity was filmed which will be able to buy on DVD soon. However, P1 and P2’s were allowed a sneaky preview and all gathered together on Friday morning to watch back their performance. Everyone was fantastic!
We have done lots of consolidating on long vowel sounds, digraphs and constant clusters this week. We have been consolidating the following sounds: ay, ow, ing, sh, ch, th and ea. One of our favourite activities we done on this was the fly squat game. We had lots of fun and we were all very competitive!
We are coming to the end of our North Pole topic but not without some more fantastic art work. This week we completed chalk drawings and worked on the art of blending colour by smudging the chalk. We create Arctic snowy scenes and then completed these off with foam shapes. Children will be bringing these home next. I can’t wait to hear what you think of them.
We loved our teamwork task this week where we had to create a paper chain (frozen themed of course!) This was quite a tricky task to do with a partner but some pairs showed excellent teamwork skills. Maliha and Teegan had a super strategy. Maliha was gluing the sheets and Teegan was threading them through into the chain. After we stuck all the chains together we checked to see how long it was. We were very impressed with how long it was!
Have a lovely weekend,
Miss Meechan and P2M
This week has been very busy in and out of school. Well done to all the children for being such fantastic performers at our 3 Nativity shows! Photos will be uploaded by Mrs Purdie.
In class we enjoyed playing a game called Hit the Button, we had to try and find the doubles as quickly as we could.
In reading we worked independently to unscramble the words and make sentences. The challenge was then to read our sentences!
We continued to learn more about science this week using our Talking Book and focused on electricity. We used a super website to learn about electrical safety in our homes then we had to find the hazards hiding in the picture.
Friday was dress as your future job day and we had some great outfits, keep an eye on the school facebook page to see them all, here is a sneak preview of some our ours…
We were all so proud of our Nursery children this week as they performed in our Nursery Nativity. They were all so confident and expressive. A big thank you to everyone who came along to see and support the children. It was great to see so many and the children loved having you there.
We have been continuing with our countdown to Christmas by opening our Advent tree and are getting very excited about how close Christmas is coming.
The children used their listening skills this week when we read the Stick Man story. Please ask your child if they can tell you anything about this lovely story. Our PM children then took this learning further by going for a walk round the school grounds with Mr McCurdy to look for shapes and some sticks which they are planning to make into their own stick men or ladies. Our AM children worked with Mr McCurdy developing their coordination skills.
Our AM children have been making some Christmas decorations using natural materials and our PM children finished off their salt dough decorations. Both sessions used the Talking Floor books to record what they had learned from their Nativity.
Well done to our two children who received the Achievement award this time. Joshua from AM and Riley from PM. We’ll done boys!
Nursery children are welcome to wear their Christmas jumpers on Tuesday 15th December. Christmas parties will be Thursday 17th December for PM children and Friday 18th December for AM children. Rumour has it a special visitor may be arriving!
Nursery finishes for the Christmas holidays on Friday 18th December and we look forward to welcoming the children back on Wednesday 6th January.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend.
The Nursery Team
As this week is Nativity week we will not be issuing any homework to the children. I have posted a few websites and activities which you may like to try if your child is desperately eager to work at home!
This game is being used in class this week to practise doubles – Doubles game.
Have a listen to this song which we learned last week, it helps us remember how to work out more than and less than – Alligator song.
In literacy we have been revising all the sounds we know and trying to build words, try out this Phonics game.
As part of our science work we are learning about electricity and how to stay safe, this is a great website with lots of activities you can do at home, Staying safe with electricity.
In RE we are discussing how important it is to prepare for the birth of baby Jesus, here is the Nativity story – Nativity.
Let me know how you get on by posting your thoughts on our blog page! Have fun!!
As you may have guessed from the title of our blog we were celebrating all things Scottish this week. We made a class tartan using an online weaver then chose 3 colours to make our own tartans with coloured pencils to display in our classroom. In reading we heard a story aboot a wee wee moose then had a go at learning some Scots words. We enjoyed our carousel activities which included using the netbooks to play some games and listened to some traditional Scots poems and rhymes on the scuilwab website. We also listened to bagpipe music and enjoyed having a wee jig and a sing song as we made some bagpipers to add to our display. I think our favourite activity was playing Simon says in Scots-touch yer heid, yer
shooders, yer lugs- it wis guid fun!
In maths this week we continued learning about
subtraction and also learned about more than/less than using Ally the Alligator to help us.
On Thursday we discovered some funny looking elf shoes under our Christmas tree – we came up with some really good ideas about why they were there and wrote them down:
Matthew thought that the elf had dropped them from the sleigh when it was flying through the sky.
Anthony thought the elf had come down the school chimney.
Maeve thought the elf had been trying to fill the stockings under our tree but when he heard the school bell he left his shoes behind as he ran away.
When Miss Smyth came to visit we asked if they belonged to her, she tried them on but they didn’t fit, some of the children also enjoyed trying them on.
This week also marked the beginning of Advent, each day we open our calendar and take time to think of others by saying an extra prayer.
This week was Scottish week and we have enjoyed learning some new Scottish things this week. We explored some of the Scots language by listening to the Gruffalo story read in Scots. We then had Paula, who is Spanish read us the Gruffalo in Spanish which we thought it was very funny.
Here is a link for the Gruffalo in Scots:
We have also started our new number topic of subtraction. We played some subtraction bowling to help us remember the different vocabulary that is used in subtraction work. It was lots of fun.
We have continued with our North Pole topic and as part of Scotland week we decided to compare the North Pole to Livingston. In our reading routes groups we completed a cloze procedure about these differences. In a pair we then made posters detailing the differences in weather, clothes, housing, animals, food and travel between the two places. Have a look at our posters.
We have been enjoying our CLIC sessions this week and working on adding in 10’s. Here is a picture of during one of our active show me sessions.
On Thursday we had another egg delivered to our classroom and this time a note was left with it. We have put the egg in water just like the letter told us to and it is starting to crack so we think that something is going to hatch from it. We wrote stories about this and Miss Meechan thought everyone’s story was fantastic!
We have enjoyed learning about Scotland and Scottish Culture this week in P1D. We made our very own tartan, listened to, learned about bagpipes and pretended we had our own pipe band and learned some scots language.
We had another unexpected visitor this week! We came in to school on Thursday to find a Christmas tree AND Elf shoes!! We think he was in a rush and left his shoes behind by accident. We wrote stories about what we though he would do on his day off. Our imaginative ideas were great. Marcus thought he would have a rest to recharge his batteries, Zoe thought he would go bowling with his friends and Chloe thought he would go to a disco and dance to Christmas music. We decided it would be a good idea to set up a camera again to see if we could find out who the shoes belonged to. We will post the video evidence on the school Facebook page!
In Maths we have been doing lots of work using mathematical language, more than, less than or equal to. We loved using Ally the Alligators mouth to help us learn about the more than and less than signs.
We are very excited for next week as it is Nativity week! We can’t wait!!
Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond
I can’t believe the week is over, it has been so busy!!
In science this week we were learning all about forces and did some work in our talking books. We had to do an investigation about toys that moved.
We had a visit on Wednesday from Travelling Tuba which was great fun, we got to learn about different instruments and listen to some performances. Kyle was even picked to try out one of the instruments!
In phonics we enjoyed working with our friends in P1D during our carousel activities where we learning all about the ‘ee’ sound. Ask your child to tell you the Vowel House story.
As last week was Anti-bullying week we spent some time on Wednesday afternoon reading a story about Allen the Alien who had moved to planet Earth. We did some role-play with stick puppets, played with the feelings dice and used the Allen adventure app on the ipad to read the rest of the story. We learned a lot about different types of bullying.
Then the unthinkable happened….on Thursday morning we found a large, green egg in our classroom and there was danger tape everywhere. We were all very confused and sent for Mrs Purdie to help us investigate. The children decided to set up a camera overnight to try and work out who the egg belonged to, here is what we found out!!!
An exciting week in P1D! We have been learning new sounds, learning about more/less than in maths, practising for our Nativity as well as having the An exciting week in P1D! We have been learning new sounds, learning about more/less than in maths, practising for our Nativity as well as having the excitement of finding an egg in our classroom on Thursday!
This has caused great excitement in our class and we thought we should share it with you. We could not work out who the egg belonged to or why they left it, so we decided to set up a camera to try and find out. You will never believe your eyes when you see what we discovered!
We had another great experience this week from ‘Travelling by Tuba’ where we learned about lots of different instruments. Some of us were lucky enough to get chosen to participate in the show.
As part of our science topic, we have been learning all about forces. We focussed on forces that make toys move! We had great fun! Why not ask us what we found out!
We hope you have enjoyed looking at our learning. Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond.
