A Visitor in P2M

We have had another busy week in P2M and we would like to share with you our highlights.

On Wednesday we had a visit to the school from ‘Travelling by Tuba’. We were treated to a performance in the morning and some of us were even lucky enough to get involved. Richard helped to hold out a tube to show how long a tuba would be all rolled out. Ava then helped to get a sound out of the pipe by holding the bell part in place. Pawel had to blow really hard into the tube to try and make a sound and Alexis even played a tune using an animal horn! What an eventful and exciting morning.

We have also been putting in a lot of effort to our nativity this week and we are looking forward to showcasing this to you all very soon. Don’t forget to buy your tickets!

We continued with our ‘North Pole’ topic and took part in a science experiment. As a class we wanted to learn about how polar bears stay warm in the cold weather. The first thing we had to do in this experiment was put our hand into a bucket of ice cold weather… it was very cold! Polar bears would be freezing swimming in water this cold so we know that they must have a special way of keeping warm. We learned that polar bears have lots of fat under their skin and they get this fat from eating seals. We put oil in 2 bags to represent the polar bear fat and put our hand in between these bags and into the water. Our hand didn’t even get cold. This is a very clever way that polar bears stay warm in the Arctic. With a partner we then labelled different parts of a polar bear using the knowledge we had gained this week.

On Thursday when we got to school there had been more strange things happening in our classroom. A giant egg had been left! It was left safely in a nest and there was a trail of straw coming from our garden door. We wrote stories about who we think left the egg behind and why they had left it. We then decided that someone would need to come back for the egg and we wanted to find out who. Sophie R had a great idea to set up an iPad in the classroom and fill the action overnight. You will never believe what we found…        WP_20151126_08_02_30_Pro WP_20151126_08_02_39_Pro

Strange happenings in P2M

Our week started off by learning the ‘ch’ sound. Here is the song we sang along with to remind us of this sound.

We are really enjoying our ‘North Pole’ topic. This week we looked at the Arctic landscape, in groups we discussed some features in a range of photographs of the Arctic. Using our ideas we gained from the photographs we drew and then painted our own landscape picture.

When we got to school on Thursday we couldn’t go into the classroom because something strange had happened during the night. Everything had been turned upside down! No one knew what had happened. We found lots of things that had been turned upside – all the tables and chairs, the books, our homework boxes, the ipads, our daily timetable, the finished work tray and even cuddles the dog! A few people thought Mrs Gardner had done this to our classroom so we tracked her done and asked her… it wasn’t her! We then thought it might have been Mrs Purdie… but it wasn’t her either! Ava thought the nasty fairy had done this to our classroom. Ethan thought it was a magical bat and Imogen thought it was a mermaid fairy with magical powers. We still haven’t found out who it was… it is a mystery but we hope it doesn’t happen again because it was very tricky to do our work on upside down tables! We hope nothing strange happens next week…

On Thursday we also had a visit from the SSPCA. We were shown lots of different equipment the SSPCA officers need to use to help animals. We also know if we see an injured animal to tell an adult and they will phone the SSPCA.

Linking the Learning is one of the phrases we like to use in class. We linked our writing with our interdisciplinary topic:Planet Earth, Sun and Moon. Children had to persuade an alien to come to visit Earth. Lots of enthusiasm was generated after watching the trailer clip from the move E.T.
We also linked the learning when we made papier mache planets! What a messy activity this has proved to be, but worth every minute as this work in progress is coming along nicely.
We had a visit from the SSPCA and the children learned that they should contact the SSPCA if they find certain animals in danger.
We made another link here with the introduction of Ed the duck to our class. Ed is helping the children to spell past tense verbs correctly, by adding “ed” to the ending.
Maths has been very active and the children loved the round the class snake game which challenged them to work as a team and beat the timer whilst making up 3 digit numbers with place value cards.
We had a visit from our class baby, Holly, and she was able to smile and react more to the children now that she is 20 weeks old!
To round off the week, Filip rang our Golden Time Bell which means tidy up for home time!

Happy weekend, hope you like this week’s pics!

Primary 3/4 News

This week has been fantastic!

We have been learning and preparing for our Christmas party by practicing traditional Scottish dancing. First we learned ‘The Virginia Rio’ and ‘The Military Two Step’.

Haseeb said “it was fun” and Rachel said “it was a good way to learn different types dances.” Although this was fun Mark said “It was also tiring”. Isabella said “it was amazing”.

Nasim said “some of us had to dance with boys and some of us had to dance with girls”. “This was important because you need another person to do these dances” said Aoife. We are all looking forward to doing this again next week.

Yesterday was a little different in our class because we had a special visit from the SPCA. “They taught us all about wild animals” said to said Lukasz.

We played a fun game in teams of two guessing the animal using different clues said Evie. The SPCA told us that they take the animals away from their owners if they are injured or if they are not being looked after properly.

Haseeb remembered that “some animals and go to sleep at winter and wake up at spring and this is called hibernating.”

Jacob was shocked to hear the Mrs Kerr would like to hibernate at during winter. He said “you will miss all of the snow”

Have a fab weekend!

Fond farewells and festive fun

This week saw the preparations for the festive season begin with Scottish Dancing in PE in preparation for our Christmas Party and our first full rehearsal for the nativity. The children enjoyed learning the Grand Ole Duke of York and worked well with a partner to practise their moves! On Thursday we joined up with the other children in the P1 and P2 classes to start rehearsals for the big performances in December. We were really proud of our P1 children confidently saying their lines that they had been learning in class and at home – thank you to the parents for assisting with this! I am sure some of you will be singing the songs in your sleep by the time the performances come around!!

In maths we continued learning about subtraction focusing on using a number line. We learned that it was quite easy to jump back, we used Fireman Sam and his ladder, hopscotch, a number mat and games on the smartboard to help us.

IMG_1359 IMG_1360

Reading was fun this week as all the children read their new stories to one another and played the games that came with their books. Here are some photos of us in action working together in pairs.

IMG_1365 IMG_1366

We learned more about toys in the past and decided to make our very own set of clay marbles. It was tricky rolling the clay into a shooter and some smaller marbles. Next week we will paint them then give them a glossy shine!

IMG_1368 IMG_1369

Finally on Friday we had to say a fond farewell to Miss Proudfoot who has been working with us for the last 4 weeks. We have all enjoyed having her in our class and she will be missed – good luck in your next school Miss Proudfoot!!

Primary 6/7 News!

Experiment 1 021  Experiment 1 015

This week in P6/7 we have been learning about pets in Spanish we made posters about the different kind of pets. They have very unusual names like un perro (dog), un conejillo de Indias, (Guinea pig)and  un caballo (pony/horse).

This Wednesday we started our Scottish dancing. Mr McCurdy said that we all participated well and worked hard. Then on Thursday we did Scottish dancing again but with Mrs. Reeves she said we all did well too! We have been working on our Science topic over the past few weeks. In our investigation into mould, we have found out that the mouldiest bread was the wet bread in class and also the wet bread in a dark cupboard. The least mouldy were the slices that were put in the fridge and in the freezer.

Experiment 1 024

In maths we have been doing co-ordinates with Mrs Keegan and played a few games to do with co- ordinates like battleship, finding the co-ordinates and spelling out the co-ordinates.

On Thursday we had a special visitor from the SSPCA who told us  about endangered animals in the wild like the red squirrels, grey squirrels, various birds and much more.

By Emily and Catherine and Eve.

Have a great weekend from all of P6/7 and Mrs Reeves!

Bear Love!

bear love

The Community Links and Charity Committee decided they would like to support Bear Love this Christmas. This is an organisation that is collecting teddy bears/ soft toys for the refugee children to brighten up their Christmas. We are hoping that you would agree that this is a great cause. We are asking, now that the Christmas clear outs are well underway, if you could donate a teddy bear/ soft toy that is in good condition and that will be a real comfort to a child in need. We ask that the toys are handed in to Miss Diamond by Friday 11th December.

Below is a link to the facebook page if you wish to have a little look.

https://www.facebook.com/bear.love/#!/bearlovefromscotland/?fref=ts

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Diamond, Mrs Gardner  and the Community Links/ Charity Committee.

Thank you and farewell to Miss Corbett!

We have learned lots and had great fun in P1D this week. We have been super mathematicians and loved learning about subtraction! We really enjoy playing the role of the teacher when we are practising our Learn It’s!

We have been looking at feelings and emotions with Miss Corbett and what might affect how we feel. We read the story ‘A Big Bag of Worries’ . We  know that it helps to share our worries and that it’s ok to sometimes feel that way. We put all of the worries in a balloon and eventually, it got so full, that it exploded! We don’t want that to happen to us so we identified people we could talk to if we were feeling worried or upset about something. Can you work out how we are feeling in these pictures?

As part of our topic, we have been learning about toys from the past. One of the toys we liked the look of was Marbles. We decided to make our very own set using clay! They are still a work in progress but what do you think so far? We had to make sure they were round so that they would roll. Look at the concentration!

Finally, we would like to say a big Thank You and Farewell to Miss Corbett (student teacher) who has been working with us for the past 4 weeks. She really has made learning fun! Good Luck for the future Miss Corbett.

Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond :).

Fly me to the moon!

Thank you to everyone at home for supporting your children with their topic homework menu. The space rockets, fact files, alien pictures and postcards are fantastic! Keep them coming!

We wrote letters to John Lewis this week, to tell them what we thought about their new Christmas advert featuring the man on the moon. Here is a mixture of some of the sentences for you to enjoy:

Dear John Lewis, I want to know if you live on the moon? Are you a real man on the moon or are you an alien dressed up as a grandpa? Is the man on the moon the little girl’s grandad? How does the old man breathe? I am going to give my grandad a lovely Christmas. I am writing about your advert because I am learning about the moon. I liked your video because it made happy tears come out of my eyes. I could go to the moon and we could meet each other! When you look down to Earth is it scary? If I was you I would try to go to Planet Earth. Is the grandad in Heaven?

Hope you enjoy this lovely insight into the imaginations of your children!

Happy weekend,

Mrs Howley

Strange goings on in P1R

What a busy, but strange week!

It started calmly with our reading lessons where we were working in teams to sequence our stories without picture clues! We were also learning about true and false with Miss Proudfoot.

IMG_1218 IMG_1245

In maths we continued to learn about subtraction using a bug game and a new ipad app.

IMG_1239 IMG_1240

In phonics we learned about the letter ‘x’ and Miss Diamond’s mum kindly donated some real x-rays for us to use.

IMG_1252

On Wednesday we observed the 1 minute silence to remember those who died in the war, we used our candle timer as a visual reminder. Everyone was very respectful.

IMG_1242 IMG_1244

Then things started to go wrong…..we went back in time to the 1950’s and learned about school life in the past. The teachers were really strict, the children had to write with slates, everyone sat in rows, if you were naughty you got the belt or had to wear the dunce hat (Miss Proudfoot was very naughty and we made her sit in the corner!). We also did a drill lesson for PE and it was tough, lots of press ups and star jumps.

We also learned about playground games and had a go at different activities – hula hoops, marbles, throwing the bean bag and hopscotch. Mrs Roy loved hopscotch!

Things got even stranger on Thursday morning when we came in from break to find our classroom upside down. We came up with lots of suggestions as to what had happened – a bad man broke in through the windows, the time machine had an explosion, the naughty fairy from nursery did it!! Everyone wrote a story about their ideas (on the floor as we couldn’t use our tables), Miss Smyth and Mrs Beattie came to help us investigate, Mrs Beattie left us the good fairy in her little fairy house to help us clear the mess. Thankfully when we were at PE she must have used her magic fairy dust to put our class back to normal, phew!!!

All in all it was a fantastic but strange week!!!!!! I wonder what will happen next week??????
