P2M Weekly News

This week in P2M our big maths focus was ordering numbers. We worked on ordering numbers from smallest to largest and largest to smallest. We had to read the words largest and smallest and remember what they meant. We completed lots of fun activities and games to help us practise this.

We have continued with our number topic of division. This week we finished off learning about sharing and began to learn about grouping. We also learned how to read and write a formal division sentence and solve using cubes. We enjoyed taking it in turns at being the teacher and a carousel station. Have a go at home using the link below:

Our maths topic is continuing on time and we are becoming superstars at telling the time (o’clock and half past) on an analogue and digital clock – we can even convert between analogue and digital. We participated in some active maths game and some interactive games. Have a shot at the game at home using this link:

We have continued with our athletics block of learning in PE and enjoyed participating in the 60m race event outdoors. We also took some of work outdoors into the garden this week since it was such lovely weather!

Have you heard all about our special visitors this week? The fire brigade came in to tell us all about their job in the community. We even got to have a shot of the hose in the fire truck! Miss Boyes couldn’t resist getting involved in all the fun too…

Fantastic future firefighters in P2B!

This week in numeracy we began our division topic. We started off by learning how to share objects equally. We played an interactive game where you had to share the objects and find out the answer to the division calculation.
The link below will allow us to play the game at home. http://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=sharingv2 When playing the game we begin by choosing the moveable objects option in the middle.

At one of our other stations we had to read the problems on the playdoh mats and solve them by sharing the playdoh out.

We have been practising our spelling words too! Miss Boyes has included useful spelling websites in our homework. The websites have  fun games for us to practise our spelling words. We have been encouraged to use it at home and update Miss Boyes on how we got on with our games.

In writing this week we worked on our ability to use question marks. We chose a character- doctor, police officer, vet and fire fighter and we thought of different questions we would like to ask them about their job. We wrote some great questions. Here are a few:

Interviewing a police officer- Do you use computers at work?- Cameron
Do your road cameras work?- Hasan
Interviewing a doctor-            How do you make yourself feel better?- Emma
Where do you get the medicine?”-  Angel

This week we went on another trip to the library to return our books. We also got to choose a new book to read in class. We love reading our books!

Also this week we had a special visit from the firefighters. This was very exciting because the firefighter told us all about his job and also told us what actions to take if we think there is a fire in our home.

It is very important that our smoke alarms are working, so we have been asked to check them!
We will receive a dojo point if we do. For homework next week we are being encouraged to make our own fire exit plan! The fireman also had Miss Boyes volunteer to wear the firefighter uniform. Miss Boyes looked like a real firefighter and said that the uniform was heavy. The firefighters have to get dressed quickly so they can get to the fire as quick as possible.

After Miss Boyes dressed up as a firefighter we were very lucky and got to go outside to see the fire engine! We even got to use the fire hose that the firefighters use to put out the fire.

Feeling the heat in P1R

What a lovely sunny week we’ve just had although it’s not as bright today!

This week has been another busy one. In Religious Education we have been learning all about Mary and have been saying a Hail Mary every morning before we start our lessons. We watched a short Bible clip  and then coloured in a stain glass window for our learning journals.

In maths we have continued to focus on ordering of numbers within 20 as some of us found this tricky last week, we’ve all got much better at it now. We enjoyed playing the loop card game and working in teams to order the numbers quickly before the timer ran out. The boys were victorious beating the girls 2 games to 1! We also played number bingo and a dice game to help us find the number more or less than. As a reward for everyone’s hard work we went outside to play ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’, we all remembered our o’clock times.

In literacy we continued to challenge ourselves by reading and spelling s blend words, everyone did really well with this. Our spelling and reading continues to get better each day and we love to beat our highest scores in our tricky words.

IDL has been fun this week as we have been learning about the parts of the body and the skeleton. We all made moving people, cotton bud skeletons and labelled the body parts correctly. Have a look at our class display when you’re here for Parent’s Evening. We also listened to some stories and songs about skeletons.

Preparations have begun for our class assembly which is in 2 weeks time. All the children have been issued with a speaking part to learn as part of their homework – well done to the children who know this by heart already! We will try to find some time next week to get the microphones out and practise using these. Congratulations to our friends in P1D who did their assembly today – you were awesome!

Next week as you know will be our annual Health Week, a letter has been issued today and there is further information on our class story on dojo. I will update this daily with the next day’s activities to ensure everyone comes prepared. Get lots of rest over the weekend as we’ll be really busy next week, hopefully the sun keeps shining!!

P5 (a-day)

This week in our Food Glorious Food topic we have been looking at the benefits of fruit and vegetables and why it is so important to establish healthy eating habits in young children.  It astonished us when we learned that 56% of children at Primary schools in Scotland do not eat enough fruit or vegetables in a day and this rises to 80% for Secondary aged pupils.  This led us to write a mock letter to West Lothian Council explaining that we think it would be a good idea for all P1 and 2 children to be given a piece of fruit to eat during their milk time.  In our letter we expressed our opinions and backed it up with some facts that we learned.  The were some excellent examples of fact and persuasion on show, perhaps there are future politicians among us or even a future First Minister!

In maths we have started a new method of developing our mental maths strategies.  It is called “Numbertalks”.  For this we have been focusing on strategies for doubling and halving a 3-digit number as well as X10 and /10.  During these lessons we do not put our hands up instead we hold our closed fist against our chest and raise our thumb if we have worked out the answer.  We can show how many different maths strategies we can use to get the answer by straightening our fingers.

Next week is our school Health Week and everyone has a letter home with them today explaining that they have to come to school dressed in sports wear for the week, be prepared in be indoors and outdoors.  I cannot wait, this is my most favourite week in the school calendar!!  My trainers have been washed and my leg warmers are looked out…

Loads of photos to come next week!

Make sure you are well rested over the weekend ready for our week of activity next week.

Mrs Currie

The stars of the show!

What a brilliant week we have had in P1D! One of the highlights of our week was preparing for and performing our class assembly for the other boys and girls from nursery to P3! We were all brilliant at our speaking parts and sang our hearts out! Mrs Purdie videoed us singing and she is going to post it on the school Facebook page! Let us know what you think!

In maths we have been learning about numbers that are more or less than! We enjoyed playing bingo and using the loop cards where we tried to beat the clock working as a team!

This week, we have enjoyed doing our daily mile in the sunshine and are now all able to complete the route in the time given!! How good are we!?

Remember, next week is health week so we need to wear sporty clothing all week! REMEMBER to bring a water bottle!

Have a great weekend, Primary 1D and Miss Diamond!
