This was just a short week for us but we managed to cram a lot of exciting learning in! When we returned on Wednesday we had PE with Mr McCurdy and everyone is really enjoying learning and participating in athletics. This is part of our interhouse championship and all the children are loving the competitive side to this block of PE. We also enjoy outdoor learning with Mr Hunter on a Wednesday. This week with Mr Hunter we learning all about lifeboats and their important job. We then thought about what would make a good lifeboat and made our own using tinfoil, we tested our boats outside in the water tray.

We continued with our current project of building a ‘People Who Help Us’ town. Our buildings are now complete and we enjoyed playing with them in our structured play this week.

We all enjoy our story writing lesson on a Thursday. This week, we tried out a new concept in our writing. Everyone was given the same story starter: “Suddenly there was a loud bang and the moon fell from the sky. I was…” The stories were all fantastic and everyone has super imaginations. Have a look out for these stories next time you have the opportunity to look in our jotters.

We wanted to learn about vets as part of our topic. On Friday we had some special visitors to our classroom. We learned about how to care of pets properly and what to look out for in case our pets need to go to the vet.

Work on our new wall display about our “Food Glorious Food” topic is well underway.  We have decided our “Ninian’s Nutritious Num Nums” will cost 50p and we have created our own posters to advertise this product.  We have been creating catchy slogans to help sell this product, some examples are

“The flavours are tropically explosive!” (Krzysztof)

“Have a short break, have a num num!” (Edwin)

“So milky, forget about the UDDERS!” (Reece)

In maths we have been revising our written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  We had to make sure that we lined up our place values correctly when we were writing our vertical calculations.

We are also listening to the story of “The Magician’s Nephew” which is the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia.  We are at the exciting moment when the characters Polly and Digory are about to visit Narnia for the first time!!!!!

To link with our Health topic we are learning the body parts in spanish, this is the youtube video clip we are currently watching to help us,

Hasta la vista.

P1R weekly news

Although it’s been a short week we’ve managed to cram it full of learning!

In maths we have been ordering numbers within 20 and identifying largest/smallest numbers. We worked independently, with partners or as part of a team.

In our CLIC lessons we have been doing lots of counting. Here is the link for our favourite song, give it a go over the weekend!

In literacy things have got pretty tricky as we are now learning initial blends focusing on ‘s’ blends this week, eg. sm, st, sw, etc. The children quickly picked this up and could guess what the word was going to be from its initial sounds. We also got some time to do a Fry’s word spelling test and some us can now spell 32 words independently – good job everyone! Try this game which helps you learn blends. Here is a picture of Ana playing it in class.

In IDL and RE this week we have been discussing our families and how they are all different. It was lovely hearing the children talk so lovingly about their families. We made some lovely family trees using collage materials and different coloured handprints for every family member.

Last week the children made some ‘Me’ bags as part of their IDL homework, we presented these to one another this week and had fun looking at all the things that made the children happy, eg. photographs of memories, sweets, toys, jewellery, etc. Well done to all the children that made these, you earned extra dojo points!

We continued our inter house championship in PE and learned about sprinting this week. We all had a go at racing one another making sure we were using our arms and legs properly. Next week we hope to go outside and try sprinting on the new tracks on the upper field.

To finish off the week Miss Meechan brought some surprise visitors to our class, Jinky and Joey, her pet guinea pigs. Some of us had a cuddle with them. Thanks Miss Meechan!

I hope you are all outside enjoying the warmer weather, hope to see some of you tomorrow at our Summer Fayre 10-12pm!

A short but busy week in P1D!

We have had a nice first week back after our long weekend! We have been doing lots of number work trying to sequence numbers from largest to smallest and vice versa! We have used number cards, games on the smart board and our bodies to try and help us as we are finding this quite tricky!

We enjoyed sharing our ‘all about me’ bags which had 1,2, or 3 things which show what we are good at, interested in or are special to us! We were all super confident when standing up and sharing our bags with one another! We also learned about consonant blends and tried to make different words with the letters ‘s,n,i,p’! We had lots of fun during this activity, especially when we had to beat the clock!

We had a chat about our families and how they are all different. Some of us have lot’s of brothers and sisters, some of us have none! We made our very own hand print family trees to represent our family! They look beautiful.

We celebrated the feast of the Ascension on Thursday by attending a whole school mass. We all tried hard to participate and really enjoyed the final hymn, Sing It In The Valleys, which we pretty much sang for the rest of the day!

We have a very busy week next week trying to prepare for our class assembly!

Have a great weekend, Miss Diamond and P1D.

Nursery News

Although a shorter week at Nursery it has been as busy as usual. We have continued with our Fairy tales topic with the children leading on the planning and learning experiences.

Our AM children have been busy in the construction area building lots of exciting models including the Gingerbread house. They have been writing  about the characters in the story and drawing them too.  We also had some special visitors on Wednesday. Four teachers from Panama were visiting the school and nursery. They were very impressed when we greeted them in Spanish and loved our bright and nurturing environment. They took lots of photographs to take back to their school.

Our PM children have been loving the puppet theatre and have been retelling the story of Hansel and Gretel using the puppets they made themselves.  The audience have been very impressed by the shows! They have also been busy in the construction area with lots of fantastic models being made.

We have also been outdoors and continued with our construction ideas using our natural materials. We are hoping for lovely warm weather soon,

Our transition programme continues next week with our PM children who are going to school in August visiting P1R to rake part in some carousel activities. They are looking forward to having this exciting experience. We also have some special visitors on Monday and Tuesday. Watch this space next week for details!

Nursery News

Another busy and exciting week in Nursery. Our transition programme is well underway with the Talking Books making their way round the children. Our AM children visited Primary 1D in their groups to take part in a Literacy carousel. They all did extremely well and looked so grown up. A big thank you to Miss Diamond and her super class. Our PM children will have their visits in the week beginning  9th May. All details of our transition programme are contained in the transition booklet which was given out last week. If you have any questions on any of the activities please ask any member of the Nursery team.

In our consultative planning with the children the topic of Fairy Tales came out as the firm favourite. Our AM children chose The Gingerbread Man as their first story. This week they have listened to the story, drawn pictures of the gingerbread man, made headbands with their favourite character from the story on them. They also got the opportunity to smell real ginger and even made some gingerbread men biscuits which they then decorated and ate! They were yummy.

Our PM children chose Hansel and Gretel as their favourite story. They also listened to the story, made the cottage covered in sweets and managed to decorate it without eating the sweets! They also made puppets of the characters in the story and they plan to use these next week to retell the story in our puppet theatre. We can’t wait to see that! They also listened to a song about the story and sang along to it.

Just a little reminder that Nursery is on holiday on Monday and Tuesday. We look forward to welcoming all the children back on Wednesday.

Have a lovely holiday weekend. Hope the weather improves!

The Nursery Team.

P2M Weekly News

What a fun week in P2M.

Our spelling is beginning to get a little bit trickier. We now know all of the original long vowel patterns in the vowel house and their alternatives. Have a look at how full our vowel house is.

20160429_100615

So, we are now beginning to learn about the differences between these patterns. This week focused on the ‘ai’ and ‘ay’ sound. We learned that the ‘ai’ sound is used at the beginning and middle of words and the ‘ay’ sound is used for the ending of words. We played lots of fun games to helps us remember this rule.

Our big maths focus this week was on ordering numbers from smallest to largest as well as rounding numbers to the nearest 10. We completed some active maths games, written work and some online games to help us develop our knowledge of this. Have a look out for these games in homework after the long weekend.

We have started our new number topic of division – we are calling it sharing for just now! Everyone has been working very hard with this topic and have all grasped the idea of this very quickly. Why played this game in class yesterday – why don’t you have a go at home too? Choose from the moveable objects column in the middle.

Did you hear about what happened to us this week? During the week we read a story that Katie had picked from the Lanthorn Library, it was called ‘Ten Flying Brooms’. Then, during lunch time one day some children saw witches and brooms in the sky! Miss Meechan couldn’t believe what had happened! The spooky part is still to come… on Thursday when we came into our classroom there were 2 brooms and a witches hat!! We couldn’t believe it. We were all so excited about this and decided to write some fantastic imaginative stories about witches. What an exciting day!

20160428_082927

We are really enjoying our people who help us topic and we have so much to look forward to as part of this but as usual structured play is a firm favourite amongst the children so here are some pictures from this week’s structured play session.

We will be returning to the library next week to return our books and choose some news – check back next week to see what books we have picked!

Have a lovely long weekend!

Primary 3/4 News

“This week was super” said Adrin 🙂

On Wednesday with Mr Hunter in our outdoor learning we were creating an Olympic torch using junk modelling and sticks from outside.

“We had to use a cup and pierce a hole in the bottom with the stick. Then we had to put the stick in the cup and wrap it with tinfoil and put tissue paper in the cup.” said Ailie.

“The tissue paper was for the fake fire.” said Jay-P

“I enjoyed and it was really fun being creative.” said Shannon

“I put a stick at the bottom and then stuck another stick so that it would be a big torch.” said Hannah

“We also had a mini relay race with our torches. We had to jog instead of running in case our torch broke.” said Haseeb

“We hope you have a nice long weekend.” Said Aoife

Primary 5/6 News

In PE this week our class has been learning about shot putt, we now know how stand properly , twisting our hips, getting power from our legs and how to throw properly.

As part of our healthy eating topic we researched how to read nutritional labels on the back of packaging and did a survey to find out how much fruit and veg our class eats. We will do this survey again at the end of our topic to see if this improves. We have also been designing different packaging for our Eatwell Plate display. We had an interesting discussion and debate on Monday when we had to put different food and drinks into unhealthy or healthy categories, providing a reason for our choice. Here are some pictures of the survey we did…

IMG_4305[1] IMG_4306[1] IMG_4308[1]

Using our knowledge of why we should all eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, how to write a letter and  learning how to use persuasive techniques we all created persuasive letters trying to convince people to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day.

We continued to practice multiplying 4 digits by 1 digit in maths. We also started our circles topic this week. We know the different parts of a circle, the circumference, radius and the diameter. We learned how to find the center point of a circle, calculate the radius and diameter and also the circumference using pi- 3.14. We will be continuing our circles topic next week.

Have a lovely weekend

Miss Bell & Primary 5/6

A week full of emotion in P1D!

This week we have been looking at our feelings and emotions in P1D and how we are all unique. We have had lots of great discussions about what affects the way we feel and how we can recognise if someone is down. One of the highlights was using ‘mood music’ and trying to decide how it made us feel. We then used the music to make a feelings wheel in art using colour and line! You will see these on display at parents night. Miss Diamond was very impressed with our efforts.

In maths we have been counting objects and looking at different spot patterns to help with our numbers to 20. We have been sharing our ‘thinking skills’ with one another to given each other new ideas. Julia said ‘I counted 3 and 3 because I know that’s 6 and added 2 more on to make 8’.

In literacy we have been learning the ‘ng’ sound! This is a tricky one but we were able to read it, write it and build words using this sound! Are you impressed?

We enjoyed having the nursery in our class this week as part of the transition program. We love being able to help them and show them how much we have learned since starting Primary 1! They were all super stars!

Have a great weekend :)!
