Primary 7A Weekly Update

Dear Parents,

Lots going on this week in Primary 7! Miss Davis, our student teacher, has been leading lots of interesting lessons and Mr McGurn is still around helping out too.

In maths, we have continued our work on addition and subtraction and enjoyed an ‘Escape Room’ on Tuesday. Luckily we escaped on time and got out of the class in time for lunch.

We have been writing limericks and especially enjoyed hearing some of Edward Lear’s famous funny Limericks. We’ll post some of our finished ones next Friday.

In HWB we learned about Article 24 of the Rights of a Child and have been discussing the dangers of alcohol. We also had some special coaches in for this week’s PE for football.

We have started our Sustainability and Renewable Energy topic and were learning about the Beatitudes in RME.

On Friday we got to meet up with our buddies to do some Halloween art.

Here is the Termly Overview for P7 up until Christmas:

Forward Plan Overview Term 2 P7

Zahra’s highlight of the week was, “I enjoyed making pumpkins and drawing a Halloween costume with my buddy.”

Chiedochie’s was, “We were working with our buddies, learning addition and subtraction. We were also doing a maths word problems escape room.”

Tanvi said, “I liked our buddies because it was fun and I got to know my buddy more.”

P5B Weekly Blog 28th October 2022

Thank you so much for all of the wonderful donations of materials for our Christmas Enterprise. We will certainly be able to make lots of different products to sell . This week the article we have explored Article 24 says: Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must provide good quality healthcare, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this. This follows on from Wear Red to Say No to Poverty last Friday when we all made stickers.

We began our activities for our Christmas Enterprise Topic with discussion about poverty and how it can have an impact on the  physical and mental health of people because of a lack of nutritious food, heating and warm clothes/shoes. Both Primary 5 classes are trying to raise money by using donated items and things we find in nature. This has been very exciting as you can imagine.

In our maths lessons we are trying to stick to a budget to buy toys and other items. The children are using coins and notes to display their understanding of money – paying for items and getting the correct change. This will help them on the day of the Christmas Enterprise Show as they will be the retailers selling their goods.

In Literacy we have been finding out about onomatopoeia. By finding the sounds of fireworks we created

sound banks and then wrote fun firework poems.

As part of our Religious Education on Monday we learned a little bit about Diwali and made some Rangoli Patterns which are used as part of the preparations. Happy Diwali to everyone.

In our Outdoor Learning we collected lots of twigs to create some of our enterprise items, we gathered different types of leaves to identify some of the different tree types we have in our woodlands. We also created halloween pictures from found objects in the woods.

On Monday it is Halloween and Primary 5 are allowed to come to school dressed in their costumes. Please remember they will be out playing and costumes may get damaged through wear and tear.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. See you all next week.

P7B Learning Highlights Week Beginning 24.10.22

Forward Plan Overview Term 2 P7

Pupil Highlights:

Alex: We were revising how to multiply a number by 10,100 and 1000. The numbers move to the left. It depends on how much you are multiplying the number. If it is 10, the numbers move once in their place to the left. If you multiply by 100, the numbers move along two places.

‘Every number has a place and every place has a value’ thank you Mr Pentland for this useful place value phrase.

Rupert: We have been collecting our words of the day and encountered vocab.

Kieran: When we are given our word of the day, we use the ipads and go on word hippo or nifty word and search the meaning of the word.

Debbie: We have to identify the number of syllables, the word class, synonyms, antonyms , prefix and suffix.

Hanna: We also have to provide an example sentence to show how the word can be used.

Caiden: Our words in context this week have been :

‘The library has a diversity of books.’

‘The Clyde Side had a diversity of boats.’

‘The police man deprived the prisoner of their phone.’

Rebecca: ‘ I am sleep deprived.’

Hannah: We went into working groups with primary six to learn and test each other on maths vocabulary.

Rupert: We had to ascertain the definitions of maths vocabulary.

Liam: The two maths skills we have put in our How to Maths Diary are:

How to plot  missing numbers on a number line with intervals.

How to plot missing numbers on number line without intervals.

Hot Chocolate Winner This Week: Congratulations to Monique for all her hard work and being such a helpful member of the class.

P2B Week Beginning 17th October 2022

Hello P2B families!

Welcome back after our October holiday.  I swear the children have grown!  Despite our short week, we have been busy bees!  Here are our learning highlights from the Blue Table:

Blair said the best part of his week was meeting our special friend, ‘Even the Owl’.  Even only likes to eat numbers that end in 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0.  He thinks the others taste too odd!  A bit like eating stinky socks!  We sang a song to the tune of ‘Bingo’ were the lyrics were, “There was a farmer had an owl, and Even was his name oh.  2, 4, 6, 8, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 0 and Even was his name Oh!”  If the children sang the song very well, then Even jumped really high at “Oh!”  We had a competition to see if the girls or the boys sang it the best.  It was a draw!

Karina shared that she loved the Even and Odd hunt around the school.  The children worked with a partner to find numbers within their environment.  They then had a chat to decide if it was Even or Odd and then wrote it in the right column on their worksheet.  They discovered numbers all over the school….on microwaves, on clocks, on posters, on photocopiers, on classroom doors are to name a few.  Super teamwork everyone!

Sofia enjoyed making her Morph animation on the StopMotion app.  We are now concluding our topic of ‘When our Grandparents were Young’.  Look out for our homework interview task on Seesaw next week where the children will be invited to interview a grandparent (or relative of that age) and learn more about life when they were young.  If you need extra time for this homework task then this is not a problem.  It will remain on Seesaw for a few weeks.

Lilly said her highlight was when we decorated our grandparent templates using material to give them clothes.  We saw some lovely scarves and waistcoats for our grandparents!

Eli recounted that hearing ‘Stick Man’, our Word Boost story, was the best part of his week.  He liked the word ‘Chuckle’ best.

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was listening to some 70s music.  Some songs included hits from The Bay City Rollers, The Beatles and Abba.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

P5A Weekly Update: W.c. 17th October 2022

Primary 5 have had a wonderful start to the new term this week!

This term our interdisciplinary topic will be focused around Enterprise. We are all so excited to be creating our own products and selling these at our very own stalls in December. As part of this, we are currently focusing our maths topic around money. This week we had great fun engaging in lots of money games, challenges and practical activities! The children enjoyed their learning so much that they even created their own shop and gave Miss Ventisei and some other customers a set budget to spend there. We had lots of fun working together and built upon so many new skills too. During our morning challenges this week we have also been practicing our counting in steps of 12-25. Each morning our groups all had a different concrete material to work with and we’ve enjoyed watching all of the different ways that we can represent the same thing. Well done P5!

Throughout our literacy lessons this week we have been recapping and furthering our knowledge of alliteration. We started our week off by looking at some uses of alliteration in advertising (this tied in really well with our Enterprise topic!) and created our own company names and taglines for different products using alliteration. Leo was particularly proud of his tagline for a baked beans company- “the best baked beans in the beaniverse!”. On Thursday we used our knowledge of alliteration to create our own spooky Halloween poetry. We created an acrostic poem and made sure to use alliteration in every single sentence!

Whilst the weather this week hasn’t been great, we still braved some drizzle and ventured outdoors for Daily Mile and outdoor learning! We went on an autumn leaf hunt in our playground and collected at least 5 different types of leaves each. When we returned to the classroom, we used a key to figure out the type of leaves we each had and we were so shocked to discover how many different types of trees we have in our school garden! We also noticed that some leaves had some black dots on and so we researched why and how this had happened.

This week we were discussing poverty. We had lots of really mature class conversations about poverty and its impact upon mental, social and physical wellbeing, education and relationships with family and friends. Our class strongly believed that children’s rights are not being protected and respected where children are living in poverty. We decided to create our own posters to communicate our own thoughts and messages about this issue. Miss Ventisei was so proud of the empathy, maturity and kindness displayed by the pupils.

On Friday we loved playing lots of fun games with Mrs Lafferty during P.E.  We also really enjoyed having some time to get creative in the creation station and construction area.

Thank you for another wonderful week P5, have a lovely weekend!
