P4A Learning Highlights 4th March 2022

This week in P4A

Research Area :

We are really enjoying our research area and have been independently using the laptops and Ipads to research different elements of Roman life.  We have made fact cards using lovely pens and any really interesting facts are added to the facts of the week display.

Roman Pottery:

We all had great fun making pots using saltdough.  We used tools to inscribe Roman patterns on the sides and have left the pots to airdry.  Next week we are going to paint the pots.  We are all super proud of the pots we have made.

Fairtrade:

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight, we investigated the journey of cacao beans and how fairtrade helps to ensure that farmers receive a fair income for their beans.  We were also surprised to learn that fairtrade companies help to fund healthcare, schools and clean water in the villages where cacao farmers live and work.  We made posters to encourage people to choose fairtrade chocolate when they get to buy a special treat and talked about how we could make this choice when we are at the shops.

World Book Day:

We had great fun on world book day, where every time the bell rang, we stopped what we were doing and read our favourite book.  We all took a book token home in our bags that we can swap for a free book!  We are excited about making our spoons into book characters and can’t wait to share our fantastic creations.  Next week we have lots of book celebration activities happening and are very excited about them.

First Communion

As part of our First Communion preparation, the boys and girls who are making their first communion this year discussed our memories of the sacrament of reconciliation.  We had our own service of reconciliation where we remembered how important it is to say sorry for things we have done wrong.  We compared these wrongs to stones, thinking about how guilt and shame weigh us down, just like carrying around a pile of heavy stones.  We remembered how saying sorry lightens us of this heavy pile and cleanses us as people by placing the stones into clean water.

Our hot chocolate winner this week is Akshaj.  Well done and keep up the good work!

We have had a great week in P4 and look forward to next week.

Primary 6A Weekly Update 4th March 2022

On Monday, Primary 6 continued their learning about Fairtrade. The Childrens Rights Articles were linked to World Book Day. So far we have had great class discussions, created posters and shared information about our favourite books. We will continue to explore these rights next week in our school book week.

Article 17 – access to information from the media, every child has the right to reliable information from a variety of sources.

Article 29 (goals of education) –Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full.

Article 31 (leisure, play and culture)-Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.

In Literacy, the children carried out research into the Human Heart and began to write information reports to be shared with other classes. They used writing targets to make these interesting and structured. The class explored character descriptions using adverbs, adjectives, metaphor and personification and we will be developing our understanding of these things over the next few weeks.

In math we have been continued developing our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages. It is great to know that we can use our multiplication and division skills to solve problems and change fractions into decimals, decimals into percentages and percentages into fractions.

On Shrove Tuesday afternoon we enjoyed eating pancakes with jam, butter and honey.

On Ash Wednesday we recieved our ashes from Father Simon and prepared for the beginning of Lent and our journey to Easter. In the afternoon we painted our Nessie sculptures in camouglage colours to keep them hidden below water.

Thursday was World Book Day, we read our books, examined characters in books we were reading and brought home our wooden spoons to create our favourite book character of all time. We also got a World Book Day token to buy a book with.

Next week is our School Book Week and we will be carrying out a great variety of fun literacy activities.

This week in P7B

P7B Update!

We had such a fun week this week in P7B!

Literacy

During literacy we worked on our note taking skills. We used a digital resources to read this week about the rainforest and showed our comprehension skills to answer follow up HOTs questions. We continued our work on information reports and concluded our research to begin our writing. We have been working on using OneNote to share our work with Mr Pentland.

Numeracy

For numeracy we worked on some more fractions, decimals and percentages. We showcased our skills to convert fractions to percentages and enjoyed working on these skills to illustrate access to fresh drinking water across the world and to estimate the snowfall across Scotland. We also worked on measure, exploring the jobs involved in building a house and their knowledge of perimeter and area.

HWB

We continued our work on substance and drugs this week and looked at myths or facts to do with alcohol. Some we knew and some surprised us. We explored article 3 this week which was all about the best interest of the child. This was connected through most of our lessons.

Thank you for a great week P7B!

P6B Learning highlights – week beginning 21.2.22

Another great week of fun and learning in Primary 6B!

Here are some highlights we would like to share with you:

Literacy: We have been developing our understanding of information reports. This week we made our own notes on the brain as part of our human body topic. We were then able to use these notes to create our information reports in the correct structure and self assess against the success criteria. We were able to use red, amber and green to show what we are doing well and what we need to improve on.

Numeracy and maths: This week in maths we have been using our knowledge of times tables to add and subtract fractions. Our times tables helped as we had to find common denominators. We also enjoyed playing around the world and taking part in our Sumdog and Prodigy challenges.

Fairtrade fortnight: As part of fairtrade fortnight we looked at ways we can help coffee, cocoa and banana farmers. We then created information leaflets on what we had researched. Here are some examples:

We also created some fantastic artwork based on the Kelpies which we researched last week as part of our Scotland topic!

As part of our Scotland topic we also enjoyed our challenge of creating the Loch Ness monster with clay. This took quite a bit of perseverance and we had to shape the clay quickly before it got too dry. They are a work in progress and we look forward to painting them soon.

Well done to Mohid our over and above winner this week!

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Roy

P2A Week Beginning

Hello P2A families!

Here are the learning highlights of the week from the Red Table:

Julia said her favourite lesson was gymnastics with Mrs Lafferty!

David S liked the Spanish we learned this week.  We had learned how to respond to the classroom commands: ‘sit down, stand up, silence please and listen’.  His favourite was ‘listen’ which is ‘¡Escuchad!’  Next week we are going to revise how to respond to the register with ‘Presente’ (present) or ‘Ausente’ (absent).

Chijiakwu loved our learning about the Sacrament of Baptism.  We watched a baby get Baptised and learned about the different parts of the service: welcome at the back of the Church, the different oils used, Holy Water (3 pours over the baby’s head as the priest says, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit“) the white clothes/blanket and the Baptismal Candle.

David K said his favourite learning was about the River Almond.  We watched a drone video showing us different parts of this very long river.  Watch again here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bsji_27BGZo

Joe liked our lessons on money.  This week the focus has been on finding the total up to at least £1 and using a range of different coins to pay the shopkeeper.

Zosia also liked learning about the River Almond and enjoyed watching the different Seesaw homeworks were some classmates made their own home-made River Almond!

Izzan said he loved working with Mrs Devlin for maths in the Area, just the two of us.

My highlight was our learning about Fair Trade.  It is currently Fair Trade Fortnight.  The children were horrified to learn that there are many farmers in other parts of the world that are not paid a fair price for their crops and because of this they cannot pay for a home, clothes or food for their family.  We will continue with this learning next week as we learn about banana farmers and coco farmers.  We are looking forward to a tasting lesson!  Look out for the Fair Trade maths homework on Monday.

Congratulations to Emily, our Hot Chocolate Award winner for this week.

P1B Learning Highlights 25th February 2022

This week we have been learning the sounds ‘ai’ and ‘oa’ and how to read and write words with these sounds.  For writing we were able to give a talking sentence about a picture on plants.  We also wrote an inf0rmation report about apples.

This week we have been learning about how we can record information using tally charts and bar graphs.  We made our own tally charts and could answer questions about them.

We made a class tally chart for our favourite topping on toast and then made it in to a bar graph.  The most popular topping was chocolate spread.

We listened to the story the Widow’s mite and discussed how the widow gave all the money she had while the wealthy people gave some of their money but had some left over.

During Outdoor Learning we continued to explore the loose parts and made a tent and bridge.  We also developed our gross motor skills using the scooters and bikes.  We discussed the importance of wearing a helmet and made sure they were on securely.

This week is the start of Fair Trade Fortnight.  We discussed what fair trade means and drew our own logo.  We took the logo home to teach our families about fair trade and that it means the farmers get a fair price for his/her products.  We looked online at products in the shops that have a fair trade logo.

We have great fun using the Block Play this week and created some amazing things.  Pupils Highlights:

Lilly ‘ I made a working table and a fire with the block play’

Eli ‘I made a gaming room with Lewis’.

Lewis ‘ We wrote a sign to say we made the room’

Safaa ‘I made a ship’

Reesa ‘I made a desk and an office’.

Congratulations to Ishaan who is the Hot Chocolate winner this week.

P2B Week Beginning 21st February 2022

P2B have had a super week! We have been learning about the different spellings to make the ‘I’ sound and how to count a collection of coins to work out their total. We also went outside (the only time it was dry!!) to make our own clocks using hula hoops, chalk and rulers for the hands. The children loved this and worked well together to show me their answers on their clocks, as I shouted out questions, such as 2 hours after 4 o’clock.

We learned about the River Almond for our Livingston Topic and some of the children made their own rivers at home and sent videos on Seesaw – they were all super!

Highlights from the Yellow Table:

Addison – I liked the Gymnastics because we learned ‘tuck’ which is when you put your legs to your tummy like a ball shape.

Scott – I liked doing the wordsearch for ‘ie’ words. I found them all.

Cohen – I liked gymnastics because we done balancing like on one leg.

Ksawery – I liked when we went outside to do some time work with the hula hoop, chalk and rulers to be the clock hands. I liked to draw the number on the clock face.

Anthony – I liked doing the time lesson outside because I liked to move the rulers to show the time.

Haadiya – I liked doing the clock outside too because I like to make clocks.

My favourite activity was PE doing Gymnastics. We focused on balancing using different parts of our body and finished with a competition to see who could stand on one leg for the longest (whilst keeping as still as possible!)

Well done to Rowan for winning the Hot Chocolate Award.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Lawrence
