P2A Weekly Update – 24.2.23

Dear Families,

It was lovely to welcome the children back to school after the February break.  They have had a very busy week and have been working super hard!

On Tuesday the children were treated to some yummy pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.  They could choose from a range of spreads and some of them were very adventurous and tried them all.  The children used a knife to spread their own pancakes and chose to cut their pancakes in to either halves or quarters.

On Wednesday, we had a lovely mass in the hall for Ash Wednesday where some of the children received ashes from Father Simon.

We are very pleased to announce that following on from our job interviews, Jiade has been appointed the role of Office Assistant.  Other children will also be given the opportunity to have a turn in the coming weeks.

In Maths we have been continuing to work on fractions.  The children completed lots of activities on halves and quarters with Miss Roscilli.

This week in literacy, we wrote about baby animals.  The children produced some excellent pieces of writing.  It really has been fantastic to see how much their writing skills are developing week by week.

The children learned about Baptism today and had the opportunity to pretend to baptise a baby.  Here are a few pictures of them in action:

Our hot chocolate winner this week was Chahiti!  She has been working extremely hard and is always very kind and helpful to the other children.  Big congratulations Chahiti!

Have a great weekend!

P5A weekly update: 24th Feb 23

Hello everyone, we hope you all had a lovely February holiday.

Whilst we had Monday off, we have still had a super busy and exciting week!

We have been working hard on our current writing genre of information reports and this week used our knowledge of internet safety to create some posters to display around the school. We worked hard on making these attractive and easy to read, whilst also being well-organised and informative. Excellent work P5A!

This week throughout maths we have been working on addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator. We know that when we do this, only the numerator changes (never the denominator!). We have also explored mixed fractions and especially enjoyed taking part in challenges and games to consolidate our learning. We have continued to work on area and perimeter with Mrs Callaghan and we are beginning to feel really confident with this!

A class highlight this week was Shrove Tuesday! We were very grateful for Mrs Callaghan who kindly brought in some pancakes and toppings for us to enjoy! We were learning all about Mardi Gras (French for “fat Tuesday”) which is celebrated in France with pancakes, prior to Ash Wednesday. We listened to some French songs which are traditionally enjoyed and learnt how to say our favourite topping in French!

Another class highlight this week was Outdoor Learning; we were particularly excited because some signs of new life were finally visible in the woodland! We were challenged to make our very own mouse houses with an emphasis on the type of materials which would be suitable. We had to find a safe, warm and sheltered area and select natural materials that would protect the creatures. We worked collaboratively to ensure that everyone was included and enjoyed the task.

Our Hot Chocolate winner this week was Inaayah. She is a perfect example of perseverance, kindness, respect, maturity and honesty. Congratulations Inaayah!

A little reminder to all parents and families that P5 have a class assembly next Friday (3rd March) which will be John Muir focused . We will be venturing into the playground and woodland area to engage with some outdoor learning tasks and we will also be sharing some of our knowledge and experiences along the way! Like every week, we kindly ask that children and families have suitable clothing and footwear for the outdoors where possible. We look forward to welcoming everyone on Friday!

P4b Weekly Blog Post 24th February 2023

It has been lovely to be back together with P4b after the February break.  We’ve had a busy week as always.

We’ve been continuing with our multiplication and division topic and have been deepening our understanding of verbs, including relating verbs (am, be, is, being).  We finished off our Scottish Landscapes topics and have started our new topic, recycling.  We had our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday and some of us received our ashes.  Today, we really enjoyed going into our house groups and talking about our right to express our thoughts, ideas and opinions freely.

Highlights:

Jonah, Zac and Jude: We enjoyed PE because we played a game that was like a real basketball match.  It was a team verses another team and it was like Piggy in Middle.  It was really fun.  We also played Banana Tag and other basketball games.

Aiden: I liked starting our recycling project.  I am looking forward to this project.

Ishani S, Paige and Stefi: We liked doing music with Mrs de Luen because we played a game where we bounced a ball and then we had to do some actions like clap our hands.  I found it really easy and fun.

Matteo: I liked maths this week because we did division.  I feel ready to do this and to learn about the bus stop method.

Shelby: I liked doing Sumdog on the computers because it was fun.

Daniel: I liked listening to the music with Mrs Morrison.

Well done to Shelby, who is our Hot Chocolate winner.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Mrs Brown

P7A Weekly Update

Dear Parents,

Here’s an update on what we’ve be doing this week in p7A.

In maths we have finished our work, for the moment, on fractions decimals and percentages and will complete an assessment on Monday to identify any final gaps to work on before high school. We completed some practical work, measuring the perimeter, area and volume of the classroom, upper area and cloakroom.

In literacy we have continued our reciprocal reading work on A Monster Calls, and we got to visit Carmondean Library on Wednesday afternoon. Joining application forms were sent home as a parent or guardian has to sign for an under 16 year old.

In RME we made Lenten promises and sealed them and will check them at the end of Lent to see how we got on. We visited St. Peter’s church on Wednesday for the Ash Wednesday service. Most of us who were taking part, managed to get our PFFA booklets handed in for the Friday deadline. Monday would be the very last chance!

We enjoyed using acrylic paints to try and paint in the style of Van Gogh and always enjoy our drama lessons.

On Friday we met in our House Groups, discussing what affects our local environment and what we can do to change it. This fits in with Article 13I have the right to find out and share information.

Our Hot Chocolate at Home Winner this week was…

Adam!

Great job Adam, keep it up.

As always, have a great weekend,

Mr McGurn and P7A.

P4a 24.02.23

A fun filled week doing lots of different activities.

We had Ash Wednesday and lots of us has ashes on our foreheads as a reminder to try to be loving and kind people.

We had pancakes today because we didn’t have them on Pancake day (IS)

Our Hot Choc Winner is Lily.  Our reading Champion is Ignacy.

We went to house groups today and talked about Article 13. Our right to an opinion and we learned what it can mean for us.

We used them Ipads to play on Sumdog.  We did some times tables work and looked at words with a magic ‘e’.  It is now Lent and we are going to learn more about what it means.

In Lent we should try to pray, fast and give to others.

P2B Week Beginning 20th February

Here are our highlights from the Yellow Table:

Lewis said, his favourite learning this week, was halving numbers.  We used ladybirds and two leaves to help us.  We know that half means dividing, or sharing between two.

Thuran shared that he loved Pancake Tuesday.  He tossed a pancake on the 2nd try.  He thought it was good fun.

Ollie liked when we planted carrot seeds as part of our learning about farms.  He watered the seeds.  Thank you for your help Ollie.  We look forward to watching them grow, measuring them and then finally enjoying them as part of the ingredients in a healthy vegetable soup.

Isabella said, singing ‘Miss Polly had a Dolly’ with Mrs Morrison was her best part of the week.

Musa loved writing an Information Report.  We have been studying an Information Report about Ducklings.  The children then chose their own title for their own report.  Musa chose to write about scissors and he did a super job.  Well done Musa!

Ishaan has been enjoying watching ‘Down on the Farm’ episodes (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08pj9xv/down-on-the-farm-series-3-2-cows-in-spring-and-cauliflowers) during snack time.  His favourite one so far, has been about cauliflowers being planted and harvested. Ishaan hopes to be a farmer one day when he is an adult and grow broccoli!

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was our lessons about Lent.  The children have made a Lenten Promise and have asked God to help them carry it out for 40 days.  We had a beautiful Ash Wednesday service in the Hall with Fr Simon.

Congratulations to Isabella, our Hot Chocolate award winner this week and to Eli, our Reading Champion!

P2B Week Beginning 6th February

Hello P2B families!

Here are our highlights of the week from the Blue Table:

Theo has been enjoying our Number Talks.  For the last 2 weeks, we have been focusing on estimations.  Each day, the children were shown an image of a jar full of different things and working with a partner, (last week it was whole class for modelling purposes) they estimated how many they thought the jar held.  Then I called out different clues, such as: ‘The number is smaller than 40’, then they marked off all the numbers bigger than 40 on a 100 square.  ‘The number is even,’ so they marked off all the odd numbers and so on, until we found the correct number!  The children have been improving at this skill as the 2 weeks have progressed!  I am so proud of them!  Each Number Talk lasts about 10 minutes as are out with the maths lesson.

Blair loved our weekly Word Boost corners game!  It is a big favourite among the class and a super way of revising that week’s words.  Sometimes instead of calling out the word, I call out the meaning of the word.  Blair was a winner this week when his game ended on ‘haul’.  Sofia was another winner this week also.  Well done guys!

Olivia said the best part of her week was our visit to St Peter’s Church.  She enjoyed dipping her fingers in the Baptismal Font.  I hope you enjoyed the pictures that were uploaded on Tuesday.

Evana was eager to share that the Judo Taster session during PE on Wednesday was the highlight of her week.

Amariah-Grace loved making Valentine cards today.

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was how enthusiastic the kids were when they first heard this week’s Word Boost story ‘Unfortunately’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HbmO11wiD8).  The story was about the dangers a boy fell into when he was walking through a jungle.  Each time he was rescued, another danger happened!  The story ended with him in danger.  The children DEMANDED to know what happened next?  Was he rescued?  Was there a part 2?!?! We decided to make our own Part 2 in a comic book version and then, if we wanted to, we shared the story with the class on the Smartboard.  I was so impressed by ALL of the stories!

Congratulations to Evana, our Hot Chocolate award winner this week!

I hope you all have a good mid-term break and I will see you all on Tuesday 21st.

P4b Weekly Blog 10th February 2023

This week has been another busy week.

In art, we’ve been drawing castles.  We drew and coloured one castle in the style of Paul Klee, using shapes filled with bold, bright colours.  We also developed our pencil sketching skills through a drawing of Edinburgh Castle.  We looked at how we could use lines to show depth, light and texture and we thought carefully about which direction the lines were facing and looked for the shapes we could see in the photograph.

In literacy, we have written a narrative using Scots language.  Our story is based on the adventures of Hamish McHaggis and we took our characters on an adventure to Edinburgh Castle.  We really enjoyed using Scots language and we have worked hard to build our understanding on how to punctuate speech correctly to show it being said by our characters.

In numeracy, we have moved on from multiplication to division.  We are applying our times table knowledge to solve problems and Mrs Brown has asked us to keep practising our times tables at home so we become even more confident with our multiplication and division skills.  Mrs Brown also says please remember to go onto Sumdog to do your maths homework.

Our highlights:

Jonah: I liked doing PE because we played Piggy in the middle with basketballs.

Leah: We got to write stories about Edinburgh Castle and I enjoyed doing this.  In mine, they had marshmallows and a big sleepover at the end.

Daniel M: I enjoyed making the PowerPoint about Edinburgh Castle because it was fun.

Mariam: I liked doing art with Mrs Lea because I liked using the bold colours.

Zac: I liked doing art as well because I like using the different shapes.

Well done to Dhanvi, who is our hot chocolate winner this week.

Have a very restful break everybody and I look forward to seeing you on the other side.

Mrs Brown 🙂

P5A weekly update 10th Feb 2023

Hello everyone and happy holidays!

We have had another busy week and we are now looking forward to a well-earned rest!

Throughout maths we have been working on equivalent fractions and our confidence with this has improved immensely! We started our week by taking our learning outside by using chalk or natural materials to show equivalent fractions. We challenged ourselves to find as many fractions that are equivalent to a half and we are proud to say that we found 31 different variations! On Tuesday we were using all of our knowledge of decimals and addition to calculate the perimeter of shapes and objects- we did a super job! We also enjoyed using the play dough to show some more equivalent fractions later on in the week. Another maths highlight was playing the sorting balls game. We had to sort the coloured balls (with various fractions written on) into their equivalent fraction hoop in as little time as possible. This was really fun and sparked lots of interesting collaborative thinking and questioning; excellent work P5A. Miss Ventisei would also like to say how proud she was for all of our hard work during maths this week, we were working on a slightly tricky concept but we all persevered and this paid off hugely!

We really enjoyed writing an information report about John Muir during literacy this week. Our favourite aspect of this was using the internet to research more about his life and then selecting a picture to add into our report. As we used Glow to type our information reports, these are available for parents and families to view at home. We will also print these off to include in our John Muir journal and make sure to display them around the school so others can learn about him also.

A class highlight for this week was art. We worked really hard to sketch and colour a John Muir inspired nature scene and then wrote out our favourite quote of John Muir’s around our artwork. We displayed these in the cloakroom and we have received lots of lovely compliments already!

On Thursday we ventured outdoors for a scavenger hunt around the school grounds! We used our orienteering skills to read our school map and followed the clues to find a secret code! We worked collaboratively in partners and Vijval’s group were the first to crack the code! Well done everybody!

Our Hot Chocolate winner this week is Julia. She displayed her fantastic listening skills all week and put so much effort into her work too- congratulations Julia!

Thank you for reading everyone, have a lovely week off and see you on Tuesday 21st February!
