P2B Week Beginning 27th February 2023

Hello P2B families!

Here are our highlights from the Red Table:

Ciara said that the best part of her week, was learning that God said, “We are the greatest!”  The children were very excited to hear how special they were to God!

Amy got very excited when she saw that our carrots have started to grow already!  There is the smallest of sprouts but they are still there!

Georgia-Rose thought that our lesson on up-levelling sentences was her highlight.  The children wrote their own sentences in pairs and then swapped with another group to add adjectives.  As you know, the Literacy homework consolidated this learning.

Emily-Ann thought our World Book Day (which SJO are celebrating for a whole week) story ‘The River’ was the best part of her week.  She enjoyed listening to the story and then learning about our very own River Almond.  We saw it on Google Earth.  It is an extremely long river that flows through other towns and cities too.  We watched a video on Youtube that someone made using a drone.  We ducked down when the drone went under some bridges.  We also saw salmon swimming upstream, against the current!

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was our introductory lesson for Fairtrade Fortnight.  We explored the meaning of the words ‘Fair’ and ‘Unfair’.  The children were horrified to discover that in other parts of the world, there are many inequalities.  They are eager to help the poor!  They know that one of the things they can do is to support poor farmers by helping them get a fair price for their crops so that they can feed, clothe and house their families.  Buying Fair Trade products mean that these farmers get a fair price for their crops.  They compared the taste of Fairtrade and non-Fairtrade chocolate.  They liked the taste of the Fairtrade best and hope to encourage their parents to buy more of these products, if possible.

Congratulations to Olivia, our Hot Chocolate award winner.

P5A Weekly Update: 3rd March 2023

Dear parents and families,

We have had another super week!

For literacy this week, we have mainly been focused on World Book Day! We had great fun creating some book covers and blurbs and watching a live writers session with our class favourite author, David Walliams. We also enjoyed our ‘drop everything and read’ sessions on Thursday when the bell rang throughout the day and we had to read our ERIC book! As a class we love ERIC time so we were more than happy to spend lots of extra time doing this!

During maths we have been working really hard on addition and subtraction of fractions, converting improper fractions to mixed fractions and calculating fractions of quantities. We had great fun completing lots of timed challenges, smartboard games and collaborative learning posters to consolidate our thinking. Next week will be our last week of fractions, decimals and percentages before we move on to a brand new topic again!

Our overall class highlight of the week was our assembly on Friday morning! We had great fun showing our parents and families around our woodland and playground area whilst we completed an orienteering challenge and created some fantastic mouse houses and birds nests! A big thank you to all parents who came and got stuck in with their children! We all had a wonderful time and hope that you learnt something along the way!

Throughout topic this week we have been mainly focused on completing our John Muir presentations which we will take home with us on Monday! We also learnt about primary and secondary sources and completed our very own John Muir inspired historical enquiry. We loved exploring John Muir’s original journal, books and artwork to answer our own developed questions. Excellent work P5A.

This week our Hot Chocolate winner was Tyler! He consistently demonstrated our school values of ready, respectful and safe. Congratulations Tyler!

Thank you for another wonderful week P5A, see you all on Monday!

P4b weekly blog post 3rd March 2023

It has been a short yet exciting week this week.

As it was World Book Day yesterday, we introduced our new book focus:

We had a lovely discussion about the different pages as we read through it together.  We are really interested about understanding how the world works (plus it links brilliantly with our recycling topic) so we’ve done lots of geography based on the book.  We’ve looked at the planets in our Solar System, and then focused on Earth, learning about the oceans and continents and the different climate zones.  We all enjoyed singing along to the Continent Song on YouTube!

Here are some of our highlights from this week:

Layla: I liked finding the notes and rhythms with Mrs de Luen because I liked the challenge.

Amelia: I loved the Masked Reader because it was fun to guess who was behind the mask.

Alexa: I enjoyed doing PE because I enjoyed reading when the bell went.

Khael: I enjoyed doing our World Book Day Book, which is called Here We Are, Notes for living on Planet Earth.  I liked the activities.

Jude: I liked doing the climate zones because I didn’t know about them before.

Well done to Szymon, our hot chocolate winner.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Primary 1A Learning Highlights 3rd March 2023

We have been learning all about Fairtrade this week. We know what the Fairtrade symbol looks like and we drew our own symbols to display in the classroom.  On Friday, we learned about Fairtrade products and did an activity with our buddies where we had to draw Fairtrade items in a packed lunch box.

On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day with lots of different activities. We read Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book and completed a task on Seesaw to say why we liked a book from our class library. Every time the bell rang we had to ‘Drop Everything and Read’, we did very well but missed one bell as we were washing our hands for snack! Don’t worry we did an extra ERIC time in the afternoon. We also watched the first episode of the Masked Reader and we had to guess which member of staff it is.

Over the next week, we will be taking part in lots of activities to celebrate our school book week.  We did a draw along activity on Friday where we drew Greg from the book Dinosaur Juniors Happy Hatchday by Rob Biddulph. We had to listen very carefully to the instructions and everyone was impressed with our illustrations.

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Oliver – I enjoyed playing with the cars.

Mohitha – I enjoyed playing with my friends.

Eve – I enjoyed doing the dinosaur drawing.

Lillian – I enjoyed doing the Fairtrade.

Summer Rose – I enjoyed writing with the buddies.

Tiya – I enjoyed drawing the dinosaur.

Aarav – I enjoyed reading the book with my buddies.

Miss Stebbing – I enjoyed doing the draw along to draw Greg the dinosaur. I was very proud of how everyone listened well and tried their best to draw.

Well done to Olga who is our hot chocolate winner this week.

Primary 7A Weekly Update

Dear Parents,

A quick update for this week.

The children enjoyed working with Mrs McLaughlin on Monday, completing the usual spelling and then starting our Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Assessments which we will finish next week. They particularly enjoyed the Fairtrade art lesson drawing coffee beans and using real coffee as colouring – the results were very effective.

Thursday was our trip to the Glasgow Science Centre and our first trip for years! Both classes were very enthusiastic and enjoyed the Planetarium and the Science Halls and represented the school fantastically well.

On Friday both classes got together again to pray the Stations of the Cross where everyone was very respectful and prayerful. P7A also had PE with Mrs Lafferty and after break we met up with our Buddies to complete a Fairtrade packed lunchbox task.

Here’s what a few P7s had to say on this week’s learning…

“I enjoyed being at the Science Centre, it was the best school trip,” Said Lily.

Zahra said, “I enjoyed working with my buddy and then reading her a book.”

“I enjoyed the tic tac tow robot at the Science Centre,” Said Joshua.

Riley said, “I liked the coffee art because it was fun.”

This week’s Hot Chocolate at Home winner is…

Well done, great job!

Have a great weekend everyone.

P7B Learning Highlights Week Beginning 27.2.23

Pupil Highlights:

Alex : We went on a school trip on Thursday to Glasgow Science Centre. My favourite part was when we got lie back in the Planetarium. On Mars, there is this drone who picks up soil on the planet to see if there if water on this planet.  We also learnt how to locate the North Start and how to find stars by seeing how they link up together.

Liam: I really enjoyed going into the Wacky Salon where the floor was tilted. You could lean downwards and you wouldn’t fall. We played Tig with Mrs Callaghan too in this room.

Riya: On Monday, we worked together to build Geodesic domes.  A Geodesic dome is a structure using triangles.

Tim: I really enjoyed playing the ice hockey four way  game at the Science Museum.

Rebecca: It was nice lying back and going to Mars and Jupiter  in the planetarium. I thought it was going to be really boring but we actually learn’t a lot on the human body floor. There were two examples of lungs, one could be described as an unhealthy lung, a black lung, and, there was a healthy lung. You had press air into them and see which one would expand better.

Connor: We have  just started discussing which roles we would like to play for our Primary 7 show.

Hot Chocolate Winner: Congratulations to Sam for winning hot chocolate this week.

P3A – WB 20.02.23

Dear Readers,

We hope you have had a good February break.😀

Although this has been a shorter week, we have still learned a lot and here are our highlights:

  • Our Word Boost Story The Highway Rat, all the work on it and our Word Boost Worksheet. The Highway Rat started being a baddie but the clever duck managed to beat him and he ended up working hard and being good, which was an excellent outcome!
  • Shrove Tuesday work, when we learned about why we have Pancake Day, when did it started and what people do, including the super fun Pancake Day races during which people run while tossing pancakes on a pan!😂😂😂😂
  • We started preparing for Ash Wednesday on Tuesday, so that we could understand well its meaning. Father Simon came for the Ash Wednesday Service and most of us got the ashes.
  • The meaning of Lent, its duration and the three things we should focus on the most during this period: Fasting, Extra prayer time and charity. We have all thought about what we had decided to give up on for Lent and most people went for chocolate. Let’s see if we can keep our Lenten Promises!😊
  • Maths learning was very exciting as well since we have learned how to build our 2 times tables from our doubles and how to make our 4 and 8 times tables by doubling the 2 and 4. We have used partitioning strategies to get to the biggest doubles as well as column addition and really enjoyed it. Some of us are still finding it a bit challenging but we are sure that with a little more practice we will get better!
  • We have started to learn about the structure of a different kind of text , the Information Report and its different parts, so that in the future we can also write our own information reports about different topics.
  • Our Lenten Art work, which was a stained glass window just like the ones we see in churches. We are still finishing them but will hopefully post them in our next blog.
  • Whole school House groups working towards the Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Gold award which are always very exciting since we get to be with pupils from P1 to P7 and absolutely love it!

And these were our highlights!😄

Also very important is the fact that our classroom became a ‘mini Hogwarts’ and we are now split into Hogwarts’ four houses: Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Gryffindor.

Just like in Hogwarts, we are the ones in charge so we can give points to our houses by demonstrating excellent effort, behaviour  and tidiness or be taken away points by not following the rules. We even got to watch a small clip about the Sorting ceremony at Hogwarts!

The weekly winning house/s members will then get a treat on a Friday!

And this week, the winning house was………… not one but two !

Hufflepuff and Slytherin!🥇🥇Super well done to them and many congratulations! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

We can even tell you that the classroom has been so neat and tidy that we could tell the cleaner we didn’t need hoovering for one day, which she very much appreciated! That showed us that team work really makes the dream work!

Because we ran out of time on Friday we couldn’t award the Hot Chocolate of the week but will do it on Monday and will post it in our next blog, so please don’t be disappointed.😊

Mrs Valente was particularly proud of some of her boys because of their effort to improve their behaviour and she has praised them many times for that! Well done and keep it up!👍😀

We are sorry that there are no pictures this week but promise to add them to our next blog.

Thank you for reading and have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Valente and P3A❤

Primary 1A Learning Highlights – 24th February 2023

This week we have been learning the ‘th’ sound. It is a bit of a cheeky sound as we have to stick our tongues out when we say it! We have been practising segmenting and blending words and we are getting confident in reading simple sentences.

On Tuesday, we celebrated Pancake Day. We have a Pancake Parlour in our classroom and we have enjoyed making pancakes for our friends. We also learned about halves in maths and we had to cut our pancake in half. We know that a half is two equal pieces.

On Wednesday, we went along to the hall to take part in the Ash Wednesday Service with Fr Simon. We have been learning all about Lent and during writing we wrote a Lenten Promise. We tried hard to use our sounds and common words. For each day of Lent we are going to choose an act of kindness to carry out. When we have completed this we get to colour in a leaf on our Kindness Tree.

On Friday, we took part in an activity with our House Groups.

Congratulations to Alexander who is our Reading Champion and to Lillian who is our Hot Chocolate winner.

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Kacper – I enjoyed playing with the numberblocks.

Lillian – I enjoyed making my own band during choosing our own learning time.

Olga – I liked playing in the Pancake Shop.

Joshua – I liked decorating a box at the creative table.

Eve – I enjoyed choosing my own learning.

Miss Stebbing – I was very proud of everyone when they were writing words using the pictures on the pancakes and then flipping them to check they had the correct spelling.
