P5B Weekly Blog 17th March 2022

This week in we explored Article 35 which states that, Governments must protect children from being abducted, sold or moved illegally to a different place in or outside their country for the purpose of exploitation.

We discussed “How do you keep yourself safe at home, at school and in the community..”

In math, we continued learning how to find fractions of amounts by dividing by denominators and multiplying by numerators. This is very tricky but we are all becoming more confident. We also took part in the West Lothian Sumdog competition and we were 10th overall across all the schools and classes in West Lothian.

In literacy, we have been focussing on developing different reading strategies – clarifying, questioning, predicting and summarising what we read.

Some of us have finished our John Muir Powerpoints but some are still working on them, hopefully finishing them next week. Due to the heavy rain we decided to paint our wooden posts and mini seats. We managed to get a first coat on but will put a second coat next week before decorating with positive messages and pictures of nature. We also decorated small wooden discs to hang around the school to make people feel happy.

Next week we start a competition to wheel or walk to school. We are due to have a new bike shed erected during the Easter Holidays and we hope for more children to cycle to school.

P2B Week Beginning 6th March 2023

Hello P2B families!

Here are our highlights from the Green Table:

Maja thought that our Woodland Library event was the best!  P2B were lucky as we had 2 Woodland Library events!  One session was with P4 reading to us and one was with P6.

Eli always LOVES joined up handwriting!  This week it was joining ng together.  Next week we plan to revise the joins we have learned so far before moving on (un, ig, ed, an and ng).

Lilly said the best part of her week was learning about the importance of cleaning our teeth.  The children practised flossing on themselves.  We learned a song that Mrs Devlin made up for her own children.  Ask your child if they can sing it to you!

Sofia loved giving the dinner tickets out with Mrs Begley this week.  She was the successful candidate of the application form for Office Assistant in P2B.

TJ  really enjoyed making music this week.  We went out the MUGA with a range of musical instruments and in groups, tried to recreate river sounds (linked with our book study, ‘The River’ and our learning about the River Almond).

Karina said the best part of her week was learning about the history of Livingston and is excited to make ‘De’Leving’s Peel’ next week!

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was the learning about the different strategies we can use to ‘Get Back to Green’.  The children have been learning about the different Zones of Regulation.  We learned about all the different things the children can do to make their brain feel  happy and calm again: dancing, listening to music, spending time in nature, painting, reading, crafting, having a snack, having a drink of water, taking deep breathes, cuddling a teddy, receiving  a hug, talking to someone about their worries/problems…….

Congratulations to Theo, our Hot Chocolate award winner for this week!

P6A Update

A fantastic week in P6A!

Our highlight for this week was definitely our trip to West Lothian college for the sustainability learning event. We all got up to different and exciting activities.

Group 1 – Scottish Owl Centre and making tote bags out of old t-shirts.

Group 2 – Virtual reality and Romany cube art.

Group 3 – Romany cube art and virtual reality.

Group 4 – Foodbanks and t-shirt tote bags.

We loved this and learned a lot! Mr Pentland really got into the Global Goals! Thank you to West Lothian College!

Both P6 classes have been busy with a lot of reading activities to continue our Book Week. We started a book study where we have been exploring and deepening our understanding of Into the Forest by Anthony Browne, we took part in a book tasting in which we tried out different books to see what we enjoyed most and we had the lovely opportunity to join P2A in the woodlands for an outside library session where we read stories to the younger children.

We all enjoyed learning about St. John Ogilvie and participating in the Feast Day Mass.

Patrick loved numeracy this week, continuing our work on area and perimeter word problems.

Joshua liked our book study and showed great understanding.

Well done everyone for another successful, busy week!

This week’s over and above winner was Vanessa! You have shown amazing effort! Well done.

The sumdog competition is now live! We were second last time, lets get first. But of course, we will try our best and be happy with whatever place we get.

Some photo highlights

Have a great weekend and I will see you on Monday.

Mr Pentland.

Primary 4b weekly blog post

We’ve really enjoyed celebrating World Book Day/Week this week.  We’ve continued exploring our book, Here We Are, Notes for living on Planet Earth.  We’ve learnt about the core, mantle and the crust, plate tectonics, mountain formation and the water cycle.  We enjoyed guessing who the teachers were in the Masked Reader activities and also reading to the primary 2s in the woodland.  We learnt about presenting data in maths, for example in tables, tally charts, block charts and bar charts.  We’ve also learnt about St John Ogilvie this week and today we had our Feast Day Mass.  We were very lucky to eat some yummy cake afterwards!

Our highlights:

Matteo: I enjoyed Feast Day Mass because it was all about St John Ogilvie.  We sang songs and I really enjoyed them.

Paige: I liked doing art because we made personality swirls and did some drawing in the style of Steven Brown.

Aiden and Amelia: We really enjoyed giving Mrs Lafferty a big (gentle!) squeezy hug because we found out she’s having a baby!  Ashley: I enjoyed having a class vote about whether it is a girl or a boy.

Daniel M and Jonah: We enjoyed trying to find out who the masked readers were.

All of us: we enjoyed eating cake today!

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

Mrs Brown

P2A Weekly Update – 10.3.23

Dear Families,

It has been another fantastic week in Primary 2a!

We started the week continuing to celebrate World Book Week.  The children completed lots of different activities around a book called ‘The River’ by Tom Percival.

In literacy, we identified the beginning middle and end of the story and we also looked for similes and created some similes of our own.

In Science, we learned that there are different parts of a river e.g the mouth, channel, river bank etc.  The children took turns to pour water through a model river and talk about the journey the water took along the river, from the source to the sea.

We also went on a walk and followed the journey of the stream beside our school, all the way down to Eliburn reservoir. We listened to the sounds of the stream and discussed the fact that it would eventually meet the river almond and flow to the sea.

We painted pictures of rivers, based around the work of Claude Monet.  As we were painting, we talked about the movement and the texture of the river.

In groups, we composed our own pieces of music that represented the sounds that the river makes.  Showing that is gets quieter and louder, faster and slower, as it moves across the land.

Our new topic is Livingston, the children learned about some famous people who came from Livingston.  They learned about James Young Simpson and Patrick Murray.  Ask your child to tell you what they are famous for.   Here are a few pictures of us investigating plants and rocks.

In Maths, we looked at digital and analogue time.  We matched the times that were the same on the two different types of clocks.

Some of the children handed in paper plate book characters, they were fantastic!  Don’t worry, if you haven’t done one yet, you can always hand it in next week.

Have a great weekend!

10th March 2023-P5A

Dear parents and families,

We have had yet another wonderful and busy week as we celebrated World Book Week, Fairtrade Fortnight and St John Ogilvie’s feast day.

Our area novel study for World Book Day is ‘Here We Are: Notes From Planet Earth’ by Oliver Jeffers. Here is a short summary:

‘Written as a manual to life on Earth from new dad Oliver Jeffers to his baby son, this simple, life-affirming picture book is both an overview of Earth and a guide to living well: concepts of kindness, tolerance and environmental responsibility are discussed’ (Scottish Book Trust).

All week we have completed lots of fun and thought-provoking activities centred around this book. For example during literacy, we created our very own whole-class project board to share lots of our ideas, knowledge, opinions and artwork. As a class we absolutely loved the pages about space and the solar system so on Tuesday, Mrs Callaghan very kindly taught everyone all of the planet names in Spanish! We are very excited that we can now list every single planet in the correct order from the sun- in both Spanish and English!  Our love for learning about the solar system also inspired us to make our very own planet Earth models. We used air-drying modelling clay to create a sphere shape, cut it in half, added our land and left to dry. After leaving to dry for 24hrs, we painted our land and sea and added our layers. We know that the Earth’s layers are made up of the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. Take a look at our fantastic creations below!

On Wednesday, we were very excited about our book-tasting event! As we moved around the class, we explored lots of brand new books for ‘starter’, ‘main’ and ‘dessert’ and even gave each a star rating out of 5. The children particularly enjoyed completing their ‘menus’ and it was lovely to see everyone had chosen lots of new books that they would like to read next! Well done P5A!

For outdoor learning this week, we were lucky enough to join P3B for a reading-buddy session in the woodland!  We really enjoyed selecting a book and finding a nice, cosy spot to read in- whilst also keeping our buddies safe in the woods. We even had a chance to show some of the P3 pupils our mouse houses and bird nests!

Throughout maths we have been focusing on fractions of quantities and percentages. We identified lots of examples of percentages in everyday life- the most common being our iPad batteries- and also thought about how they are linked to our knowledge of fractions and decimals. Lots of children said that their favourite activity was at the game station on Wednesday. We were challenged to match up over 200 percentage dominoes in under 20 minutes! All 3 teams did a fantastic job but no one quite managed all of them, so we will have to have a rematch next week! Another class highlight for maths this week was our Number Talks starters. We have been making our way through lots of challenging splat! fraction tasks (we have completed over 25!) and we are now really good at solving these problems in record time.

Since today (10th March) is the feast day of St John Ogilvie, we have been learning all about our school’s patron saint. After lots of class discussions and research, we decided to create a Padlet page with all of our knowledge and thoughts around St John Ogilvie’s life. We managed to add over 250 posts of thought-provoking observations and information which we were very keen to share with our classmates. We also printed this page off to display in our classroom and share our knowledge with others. Excellent work P5A!

On Thursday afternoon, we spent some time thinking about our child rights and Fairtrade. We reflected upon the benefit of Fairtrade for farmers and their communities and also considered our role in this. After creating a whole-class mindmap, we made some fantastic posters and leaflets to share our own learning and reflections with our school community.

On Friday morning we had a whole-school mass for the St John Ogilvie feast day with Father Simon. We also celebrated with some yummy cake, kindly baked by our kitchen staff! We all agreed that this was our favourite moment of the week!

Thank you for another fantastic week P5A, have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday.

Primary 1A Learning Highlights 10th March 2023

This week we have taken part in our School Book Week and have completed lots of different learning tasks. Our main focus has been on a book study of The River by Tom Percival. We learned about the names of the parts of the river and labelled a diagram to show these. We then wrote super sentences about the parts of the river. In maths, we have been learning about tally marks and we used this to make a graph about our favourite season. We also learned about animals that live in and around rivers. We drew pictures of these animals to put on our display. We have been learning the ’ee’ sound this week and we wrote ‘ee’ words in a tree.

As part of our Book Week, we went up to the Woodland Library with our Buddies. It was great fun reading the books in the woodland. We also took part in a Book Champion activity and each day we read two books and voted for our favourite one.  Each day we watched the Masked Reader and tried hard to think about which member of staff it was. Some days it was very easy and some days it was more challenging!

On Wednesday, we went to visit Fr Simon at St Peter’s Church. He showed us all the different parts of the church. We were very respectful and all the staff were very proud of us. When we got back to school we drew pictures of the things we could remember seeing in the Church. We made sure we had lots of detail, even down to the drawing the glass of water Fr Simon had.

On Friday, we celebrated the Feast Day of St John Ogilvie. We listened well during Mass and we got some cake to celebrate, it was delicious!

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Joshua – I enjoyed doing the masked reader.

Connor – I enjoyed doing the Book Challenge.

Filip – I enjoyed playing in the vets.

Olga – I enjoyed drawing the river animals.

Harald – I enjoyed doing the book challenge.

Miss Stebbing – I was very proud of everyone when we went on our visit to the Church and also during the Mass to celebrate our School Feast Day.

Congratulations to Alexander who is our hot chocolate winner this week.
