Primary 5A Weekly Update: 4th November 2022

Dear parents,

We have had yet another wonderful and very busy week in P5A which was kick-started with some spectacular, spooky costumes for Halloween!

On Monday, we were busy writing spooky stories and creating some fabulous fireworks themed artwork with Mrs Callaghan. We had a wonderful day and were so excited for some Halloween celebrations.

Throughout numeracy we have been learning about profit, loss, expenditure and income. We were also trying to solve some tricky money word problems! We did a super job and could even apply our knowledge to our own Enterprise, very impressive! We also enjoyed playing lots of fun practical money games and particularly loved our ‘lego maths’ challenge! We had to build a small bridge or tower and calculate the cost of doing so (each brick had a different price!), but we only had a budget of £10 so we had to build wisely!

During literacy we have recently recapped and furthered our knowledge of the reciprocal reading strategy, questioning. We know that the best type of questions to ask whilst we explore literature are ‘Extreme’ questions; these require deeper thought and higher-order thinking skills to answer. We really liked watching small segments of a short film and working with a partner to generate some tricky, thought-provoking questions! We also started a new writing topic this week- discussion. We had to write a balanced viewpoint with both for and against arguments presented. Our class question was ‘Should children receive homework every day?’ and we had lots of passionate arguments offered! Despite this, we still did a fantastic job of providing the reader with a balanced viewpoint and a clear structure. Fantastic work P5A!

We have been working really hard on our Enterprise and we have made lots of great progress with our creations this week. Each group has worked really well together to ensure that everyone is involved, respected and having lots of fun! Some of us have learnt to sew and others have been getting creative with lots of different materials which were kindly donated to us. We also linked our Enterprise with our coding and numeracy learning this week. We have been learning about variables throughout ICT, so we decided to write a code for a program to calculate the exact amount of change a customer is due. This was quite tricky, but we worked together and managed to get everyone’s programme working!

On Tuesday and Wednesday we celebrated All Saints Day and All Souls Day. As part of this we reflected upon those who had died and also researched a saint to create a special prayer for. It was lovely to see the children recognising saints that stood out to them personally and being able to share with the class why this particular saint was special to them.  We designed a template for our prayer and decorated our classroom wall with them.

Another highlight of the week was Outdoor Learning. We explored symmetry in nature and found lots of different examples of rotational and reflectional symmetry in our school garden. We also looked at various natural resources and examined their features to determine if they were symmetrical or not. We then had lots of fun using chalk to draw around half of our bodies and trying to draw the exact mirror image of our other half! We are really enjoying learning outdoors this term and would like to continue this throughout the winter term so, if possible, it would be great if children had appropriate footwear and coats for cold, wet and muddy conditions.

Our Hot Chocolate winner for this week was Liliana. She consistently displayed our school values all week and went over and above to be helpful to others. Congratulations Liliana!

This week in P1B

This week started off spooky with lots of Halloween activities. The class enjoyed a join the learning session with the other P1 class and both P2 classes. We loved seeing everyone dressed up and having fun.

We have been learning about keeping safe recently, this week how to stay safe on Bonfire Night. We also learned about the important job of a firefighter for People who Help us. We had great fun dressing up as firefighters.

This weeks sounds were ‘i’ and ‘o’ and we have enjoyed blending these sounds together with other learned sounds to make words. In maths we carried on our learning of addition.

Today we joined together with P1A for our outdoor learning where we drew fireworks with chalk, dressed as firefighters, played with the loose parts and on the trikes.

P5B Weekly Blog 4th November 2022

This week we have been exploring Article 37 (inhumane treatment and detention) – Children must not be tortured, sentenced to the death penalty or suffer other cruel or degrading treatment or punishment. We have also explored Article 40 (juvenile justice) A child accused or guilty of breaking the law must be treated with dignity and respect. We made links to Global Goal 16 which explores how to improve Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions which protect children and families. The main question was “What if everyone did that” we discussed small acts of littering which became huge when everyone did it. How one person breaking a rule seems a small thing but everyone breaking the same rule would be huge. Then we discussed how one small act of kindness could become huge if everyone did it (give to charity), remembering to say please and thank you. We had a challenge today of seeing how many people would return a smile.

On Monday we  worked  on Halloween  coordinates we will continue to learn more about coordinates over the next few weeks. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we continued to develop an understanding of giving and receiving change from £1 and £5. Some children worked on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing larger money amounts.

In our writing we are exploring how to give a balanced viewpoint. This week we discussed reasons for and against “Why Fireworks should be Quieter?” This is a tricky type of writing and we will be working on it for the next month.

We continued our Christmas Enterprise making several products to sell as well as learning Christmas Songs to entertain families.

In our outdoor learning we are continuing to try and identify different types of trees from investigating leafs we find in the woodlands. We also made some cool leaf masks.

Primary 1A Learning Highlights 4th November 2022

On Monday, we had a Joining the Learning Day with Primary 2 all about Halloween. We went to all the different classes to do different activities. In the area, we got to dook for apples! It was great fun.

We have been learning the sounds ‘i’ and ‘o’ this week. We are becoming more confident in blending the sounds together to try to read words. We also had to sort pictures by their first sound. In writing, we wrote sentences about Bonfire Night. We used our common words and a word bank to help us.

In maths, we measured objects using the conkers. We had to count carefully to see which was the longest or shortest. Some of them were even the same length. We also learned about number 13 and 14.

In our topic work, we have been learning about night and day. We used the globe and a torch to show how we get day and night.

We made special candles for our RE wall this week to remember people who have died. We also learned about All Saints Day.  To start getting ready for our Nativity performance we have been listening to the songs from the show. We even remembered some of the words and have been singing along.

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Vasilisa – I enjoyed doing rainbows and love hearts.

Eve – I enjoyed playing with the toys and colouring in.

Vedansh – I was playing with the lego and it is my favourite.

Mohitha – I enjoyed learning the Nativity songs.

Summer Rose – I liked reading the words.

Aarav – I enjoyed playing with Mr Potato Head.

Miss Stebbing – I enjoyed making ghost puppets during our Joining the Learning event with Primary 2. I am proud of how everyone is trying hard to use the sounds to read and write words.

Congratulations to Connor who is our Hot Chocolate Winner this week!

P2A Update – Friday 28th October

Dear Families,

We have had a very busy week in Primary 2A!

To round of ‘Our Grandparents Day’ topic, we tie-dyed socks using food colouring.  The children had great fun adding the colour to the socks and they are looking fabulous!  They will be dry and ready for the children to bring home next week.

We also started our new topic on ‘The Weather’, the children have been recording the weather each day using a weather chart.  You won’t be surprised to hear that we found most days last week to be cloudy and rainy, hopefully we will have better findings next week.

In literacy, we examined a poem about the weather and then we worked with a partner to create our own poems using our senses. Here are a few fantastic examples:

Our Hot Chocolate winner this week was Laura!  Laura is always kind and helpful towards others and works very hard to complete all of her work.  Well done Laura!

Have a fantastic week and we will be back with another update next week!
