P4a 24.03.23

We have looked at a video about fractions.  I learned that the top number is the numerator and the bottom is called a denominator. (AS) We have also been doing lots of division. (MM) We learned that division is the opposite to multiplication. (SF)

We have done some nice art with Mrs Lea. It was a tree that had a sun behind it. The sun was coloured with red, orange, yellow and pink which are called fire colours or warm colours. (DM)

The class looked at the parts of a report. I learned the start is called the introduction and tells you what its about. (JR) It also tries to get the reader interested. (JJ)

In PE, we are practising throwing, catching and dribbling for basketball. (JJ)

Mrs de Luen is our NYCOS teacher and it was her last week with us. We made a card to say thank you. (SF/HM)

There has been 2 birthdays this week. Our hot chocolate at home winner is Khadija.(SR)

Have a lovely weekend everyone from Mrs Ross

P2 Week Beginning 20th March

Hello P2B Families!  Here are the learning highlights from the Blue Table:

Blair has really enjoyed our lessons about money this week.  We have been learning about the value of coins and combining different combinations of coins to make the same amount.  The children enjoyed setting up their own shops, deciding on the prices of the items, making price tags and taking turns being the shopkeeper and the customer.  We have just recently moved on to learning how to find change from 20p.

Theo’s highlight was our visit to Craigies Farm.  He loved looking at the bunnies the best!

Safaa said the best part of her week was writing a Spring poem with her friend and is looking forward to reading one of these fantastic poems out at our assembly on Friday.

Evana has loved our assembly practises.  The children are becoming more confident with their roles and the singing is so beautiful!  We hope you are able to attend and will be invited to join in with that actions of the final song, ‘Celebrate’, where we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead on Easter Sunday.  Afterwards we will invite you to decorate and roll a boiled egg with your child and enjoy some Easter craft together.

Amariah-Grace recounted that the best part of her week was learning how to do Story Massage.  Mrs Devlin recently received training on how to teach Story Massage.  The children started by asking permission if they could give a Story Massage.  Those who did not want to give/receive a massage had the option of either doing it on a teddy, in the air or on their arm.  Mrs Devlin introduced the various different movements on the back.  We had a movement called, ‘Fan, Walk, Smile, Sprinkle, Wave and Calm’.  Afterwards, as a class, we applied these different massage movements to a Spring Poem.  The children really enjoyed their first Story Massage.  Ask your child if they can show you the different movements.  It was all so very relaxing.

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was our school trip.  I was so proud of how well behaved the children were and despite the wind, everyone had a fantastic time and enjoyed learning about the different crops and animals.  The new baby lambs were a favourite!

Congratulations to Ciara, our Hot Chocolate Award winner this week.

P5A weekly blog 24th March 2023

Dear all,

We have had yet another exciting and fun-filled week!

Literacy: Over the course of the week we have worked really hard on writing a high-quality narrative piece and ensuring we achieve all of our writing targets. We also peer and self-assessed our work and set personal goals for our final narrative piece which we will complete next week. On Tuesday we completed some exciting reciprocal reading stations where we focused on our questioning, summarising, predicting and clarifying skills.

Numeracy and Maths: This week we primarily focused on converting between decimals, fractions and percentages and some problem solving surrounding this. Alongside our knowledge of this topic, we were also using our multiplication, division, addition and subtraction skills to solve these problems! A class highlight this week was definitely getting the water out to represent different decimals, percentages and fractions of a cup’s volume and convert between. We particularly enjoyed trying to fill 99.9% and 0.01% of our cups with water! We also continued our work on area and perimeter by drawing and measuring our own shapes.

IDL: Since our science topic is biodiversity, we have been learning about animal adaptations. We found that lots of different animals have both behavioural and physical adaptations to respond to their habitats. We decided to research an adapted animal of our choice and we are now working collaboratively to create some models of these. We were challenged to use a variety of materials that we could find around the classroom, with many of us selecting recycled fabrics, clay, paper straws, tin-foil, bordering, lollipop sticks and much more!

Outdoor learning: This week we were very excited to get outside because the weather was absolutely beautiful and we have noticed lots of signs of Spring finally arriving! We decided to head out to the woodland, with our partners and clipboards, and sketch out our very own nature scene. We discussed different types of sketching techniques and how we might use these to capture the beauty of our surroundings. Our sketches are beautiful and many children said that they loved how calm and peaceful the environment felt.

Art: On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have Mrs Lea who did some fantastic artwork with us! We worked hard all week to finish our designs and we will enjoy decorating our classroom with these next week.

Health and Wellbeing: This week we have been exploring World Water Day; this links with UN Rights articles 24 and 27 and global goal 6 which aim to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. For P.E. we have been working on skipping and we have enjoyed doing this outside in the fresh air! On Friday we were thinking about the beat and rhythm that is involved in skipping and challenging ourselves to skip in time to Miss Ventisei’s clapping! This was a little tricky to begin with but soon we managed it no problem! Another highlight was skipping with the big and little ropes, together as a team and also on our own.

R.E.: Thursday was the beginning of Ramadan so we decided to learn a little about this special holy month. It was lovely to hear some of our classmates speak about the importance of Ramadan and the different things that they do to observe this. We explored the 5 Pillars Of Islam and learned that fasting is the 4th Pillar. We also looked at an example of a Kindness Calendar that some Muslims use throughout Ramadan.

On Friday we were introduced to the Stations of The Cross. We used a video to help guide us along and practice the responses but we will do this ourselves next week as it is the final week before Easter. We also explored lots of the station’s artwork and images in various beautiful churches and used these as inspiration to create our very own stations to display around the classroom- we’ll use these next week!

Sadly Miss Ventisei was unable to upload the pictures for this week but these will be posted in next week’s blog!

Our Hot Chocolate Winner was Emily! Well done and congratulations Emily!

Have a lovely week everyone,

P5A and Miss Ventisei

P3A – WB 20.03.23

Dear Readers,

We hope you are all very well.

We would like to start by thanking you all for your efforts to come to school walking/riding scooters or cycling. We have all been trying to help our class and school to win the competition and still have a week to go so are very thankful for all your efforts so far and during the coming week as well.🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🚴‍♀️

This week our highlights were:

  • Homophones – these words are really interesting because they sound the exact same but are spelt differently and have different meanings! We had to make sentences with them to show that we know to use each of them correctly!
  • Our spelling assessment – Mrs Valente tricked us by dictating the words within sentences in a different order! Fortunately, we did very well with our scores even with all those tricks from Mrs Valente!😄👍👍👍
  • The 2, 3 and 6 timestables and the strategies we have learned to always work them out, including   doubling  them or counting in 2s, 3s and 6s.
  • Data handling – we have learned to read information from Pictograms always paying special attention to the key. We have also learned to present information in a pictogram, even when the key represents 2 and we have to use half of the pictures. We have also reviewed tally marks and have used them to collect information that was then presented both in pictograms and bar charts, which was the other kind of graph we have learned about.📊😀
  • Science/Topic – we have learned many interesting things about endangered animals, including red squirrels, sea turtles, rhinos and our very favourite one, the giraffe!🦒🦒🦒🦒We have learned so much about the giraffe! And we are going to put all of that information that we have collected into an Information Report that we will write next week!
  • We have learned to take notes of the main facts we need to remember when we are writing and have them ready to write our giraffes Information Report.
  • RE – we have continued the Easter story and stopped on Palm Sunday so will finish it off by next week, just before we break for the holidays!😎🐣

Here are the last three Hot Chocolate winners, up to last week, since the winner of this week is still to be decided on Monday:

Many congratulations to Olivier, Aiden S and Izaan! Super well done! They were the Hot Chocolate winners of the last three weeks!😃😃😃👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇

We say goodbye for now wishing you all a great weekend with your loved ones!

P3A and Mrs Valente🥰😍

P6B – 24th March

Hello P6B families,

We have been busy this week with our learning, world water day (and taking the lead in our school’s Rights display) and of course our class trip to Dynamic Earth.

Our trip on Thursday to Dynamic Earth was fantastic and everybody had so much fun (including myself!). We explored everything from the creation of the world and all life and materials on earth. I will attach some photos at the end of this blog, but I will put them all on our Teams page over the next few days.
We also enjoyed a walk down to the Scottish Parliament and a run about in Holyrood Park. Understandably, Dynamic Earth was a big highlight for most of us, but we do have some other highlights of the week from other parts of learning this week:

– Niamh and Amelia found it very interesting exploring the importance of water and understanding the accessibility to clean and safe water across the world. This was related to our UN Rights articles 24 and 27 and linked to global goal 6. On Friday morning, we also demonstrated this accessibility through a little experiment including plastic cups, water and converting fractions into percentages to show and compare the availability of water in different continents (photos below).

– Vivien enjoyed learning about the Blooms Taxonomy Pyramid which helps us to ask and create higher order thinking questions to deepen our understanding of texts and supports reading comprehension.

– Siddharth enjoyed creating the personality artwork with Mrs Lea. This was about creating different patterns and incorporating them into some parts of our own personality.

Hot chocolate winner this week was Aditya. Aditya has been continually demonstrating active listening in class and is always ready to learn. Well done!

Have a lovely weekend everyone and see you again on Monday!

P2A Weekly Update – 24th of March 2023

Hello Families of Primary 2A,

We had a fantastic week of fun and learning!

Primary 2A have been learning lots about Spring time, the boys and girls wrote their own acrostic poems about what happens during Spring.

We have been looking at Van Gogh’s Sunflower artwork and his use of pointillism. Primary 2A painted their own sunflowers using the same dabbing technique.

In numeracy we have been learning about money. At our class toy shop, the children have been practising using money and giving the correct amount of change.

In RE Primary 2A learnt about the story of Moses.

In topic we have been learning lots of interesting things about Livingston. This week we discussed different shops in the centre, what they sell and why they are important. The children worked together in small group to design their own shop. Here are some pictures of their amazing ideas:

Primary 2A had a fantastic time at Craigie’s Farm. We learnt lots of interesting facts about different plants and animals.

Our Hot Chocolate winner this week was none other than Miss Diana!  Big congratulations Diana, you deserve this award for all your hard work and the kindness you show to others.

Hope you have a lovely weekend,

Primary 2A are very excited for their Spring assembly!

Primary 1A Learning Highlights 24th March 2023

This week we have been learning all about where our food comes from. We learned about how eggs are sorted and sent to the supermarkets. It was funny to see all the different shapes of eggs. We also learned about the lifecycle of a hen and wrote some sentences about chicks. We have been trying to use the word ‘and’ in our sentences.

In maths, we have been revising our strategies for subtraction by playing lots of games. Our favourite was Ghost Blasters. We also played Eggs to Order to help us put the numbers in order and we had to check carefully as there were some numbers missing.

We now have a Garden Centre Role Play area in the classroom and we have been working together to grow different flowers. Some people also chose to make signs and prices for the different items.

For phonics we looked at words with the ‘ou’ and ‘igh’ sounds. We can use vowel house to help us if we are not sure what sound we need. We played a spinner game and had to write the words for the pictures it landed on.

We are counting down the days until our trip to Mill Farm and we are very excited!

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Vasilisa – I enjoyed playing in the Garden Centre.

Darragh – I enjoyed playing with the blocks.

Joshua – I enjoyed playing with the letter beads.

Connor – I enjoyed doing the take away sums.

Filip – I enjoyed drawing on the whiteboards.

Miss Stebbing – I was very impressed with everyone writing the words with ‘igh’. They tried very hard to make sure they were using the correct sounds.

Congratulations to Olga who is our hot chocolate winner this week.

P4b weekly blog post 24.03.23

We’ve had a very productive week!

We have learned more about fractions this week.  We can now identify, compare and order fractions up to tenths and we have started learning about equivalent fractions, which are equal, but have different numbers of parts. We can also find fraction on a number line.

We have written an information report about recycling to share with you at home.  We have used our core and genre targets to help us with our reports so we could make our information reports even better.  We were aiming to inform you what recycling is, how to do it and why it is important.

Highlights:

Paige: I liked drawing the tree in art with Mrs Lea.

Szymon: I enjoyed doing fractions with Mrs Brown.

Matteo: I was astonished that we could make our own information report about recycling because information reports are one of my favourite types of writing.

Layla: I liked doing music with Mrs de Luen but I didn’t like that it was her last day.

Ashley: I enjoyed writing because I could write about recycling.

Well done to Feranmi, our hot chocolate winner.

Thanks,

Mrs Brown

P5B Weekly Blog 24th March 2023

This has been another very busy week of learning across the curriculum for Primary 5B. We have booked our trip to John Muir Country Park, Dunbar, where we will walk in the footsteps of John Muir and see some of the things he saw as a child. On Wednesday it was World Water Day and we explored how important having enough water in our lives everyday. We discussed how this linked with with Childrens Rights Articles 24 and 27 as well as Global Goal 6, everyone having enough clean water for their needs by 2030.

We had visitors come in and observe our Reading Activities on Tuesday, they were very impressed with our learning focus.

We continued to learn about our local environment and John Muir. We created clay birds and painted them to show the different range of birds we see in our local environment. We also carried out an outdoor Blether Activity when we worked in trios to clarify our understanding of John Muir and his ideas about protecting the environment. The weather was sunny, but windy, we had a great time running

around with our friends.

In our Religious Education lessons this week, we discussed why it is important during the period of lent to show extra love and kindness to others and and turn away from bad things in our life. We also learned about the 14 stations of the cross and how Jesus loved us so much he gave himself up to die to forgive our sins. We also learned a little bit about the Holy Month of Ramadan which started this week.

P2B Visit to Craigies Farm

P2 had a super (if windswept) day at the farm!  We saw lots of different farm animals and crops. I think everyone will sleep well tonight as we did a lot of walking!  We also sang one of our assembly songs, ‘The Seed Song’ to the sheep who joined in!  I hope you enjoy the photos below:
