Primary 7A Weekly Update

Dear Parents,

Here’s what’s been going on in P7A this week in St. John Ogilvie:

In literacy we are working on a block of Narrative writing, and really enjoying the chance to be creative. There are always story starters to help us with ideas if we need them but otherwise our imaginations are allowed to run free. Some of the interesting pieces this week include:

In maths we have been working on comparing and ordering decimals, links to fractions and some addition and subtraction of decimals to 2 places. There has been more positive engagement with maths homework through Sumdog so thank you for your help with this. The children continue to enjoy using the Real Life Problem Solving App and this week had to design a park which fit in with our lesson on area.

In science we made plastic in an experiment on irreversible change – milk and vinegar mixed and then a little bit of food colouring make a biodegradable plastic.

Our art in the style of Monet had some very positive result and will make a nice display in our cloakroom area.

The children are enjoying our drama lessons and these will be good preparation for the St. Margaret’s Drama teacher visit in May as part of our ongoing transition to high school programme.

In PE on Thursday we had a visit from Destination Judo for a taster session. The children really enjoyed the experience and it sounds like quite a few of them would like to sign up – A flyer was sent home with each pupil on how to join.

We have continued our work on the PFFA and are now getting closer to the deadline. The date for submission is the 27th of February so please make sure that all booklets are in on Friday the 24th so I can check them and give those that haven’t quite got enough evidence or haven’t reflected on how the award has helped them to grow in faith some advice and the weekend to get things fixed.

Here are some pupil highlights from this week in P7A:

Tanvi said, “What I enjoyed was… The judo as I beat Zara R and I learned something. The art of Monet because it was fun as my friends were criticizing my art.”

Chiedochie said,”What I enjoyed was the science wit the milk and vinegar to make casein plastic. Our class did judo and did art in the style of Monet.”

Rhys said, “I really enjoyed doing our art work doing a field with trees and poppies.”

Nellie said, ” I enjoyed drama, we did fun games.”

Joshua said, ” This week I really enjoyed making casein plastic in science and I enjoyed doing the art in the style of Monet. Another thing I enjoyed was doing judo but I prefer the martial art I do currently.”

Millan said, “In judo I completely destroyed Monty and pinned him.”

This week’s Hot Chocolate at Home Winner is…

Danyal.

Well done , well deserved!

Have a great February break,

P7A and Mr McGurn.

Primary 3B – Week Begining 6th February

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had an enjoyable week in Primary 3!

During Literacy, we have been focusing on including conjunctions within our sentences. We practised some actions to remind us about using the correct sentence structure ‘clause, conjunction, clause’. Furthermore, we practised correcting sentences and adding capital letters and full stops accurately.

In Numeracy, we continue to work on the exchanging method for subtraction. We extended our learning by completing worded problems and used this method to work out our answers. Furthermore, we started to access sumdog Maths activities using the Ipads. We really enjoyed Primary 7 children coming to support us with logging on.

We continued our topic on West Lothian and in Spanish we consolidated numbers 1 – 30.

We particularly enjoyed making cards for Valentines Day, as well as writing about the people in our lives who we love and discussing why they mean so much to us.

I hope you have a safe an enjoyable week off!

Mrs Broadley x

P2B Week Beginning 30th January

Hello P2B families!

Here are our highlights from the Green Table:

TJ enjoyed our Word Boost story ‘Home Sweet Hamish’.  His favourite Word Boost word was ‘clumsy’.  Something, which he assures me, he is not!

Karina liked learning the Bible story about Jesus healing a blind man.

Eli loved our Live Lesson, were we met a real astronaut!  He taught us about training to become one and answered the question we hoped he would answer, which was all about food in Space.  We learned that all the moisture is removed from food, to be brought to Space and then it is put back in, before it is eaten.  This is called ‘dehydrate’ and ‘rehydrate’.  The children enjoyed pretending to put on their seat belts and then undoing them and floating in Space.  Ask your child to show you how to put on their astronaut seat belt and what happens to toothpaste in Space when the astronauts are finished brushing their teeth!

Lilly said the best lesson for her, was our big P3 joined up handwriting, of the letters i and g together.  We discussed words that would need these letters: big, dig, fig (which Mrs Devlin is going to buy us to taste), pig, tig and wig.

Maja loved ball skills with Mrs Lafferty.

Sofia liked music with Mrs Morrison.  The children continued their learning about syllables.  Sofia was able to tell me that her name has 3 syllables.  Well done Sofia!

Mrs Devlin’s favourite lesson was our learning about the life of St Brigid.  We celebrate this feast day on February 1st, the day we believe she died.  This saint is important to Mrs Devlin because not only was she Irish but also, Mrs Devlin chose her Confirmation name after her.  The children role-played the important story about how she got land to build a church.  We learned a beautiful song about her life (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqs7lcZvSA8) and then followed up with weaving.  The children were able to build on their learning of making a Chinese lantern, as the first steps were the same.

Congratulations to Ollie, our Hot Chocolate award winner this week and Maja, our Reading Champion!

On Tuesday, we hope to visit St Peter’s Church as part of our learning about the Sacrament of Baptism.  Please send your child dressed for wet weather conditions.  Thank you.

P3A – WB 30.01.23

Dear Readers,

We hope you are all very well.😀

As always, we have learned a lot and had lots of fun at the same time. Here are our highlights:

  • Our weekly spelling, including the compound words for the Green and Orange groups who have learned that those are two words joined together to then get a different meaning.
  • Our Spelling Assessment, with excellent scores for most of the class.👏👏👏
  • The work on subtraction, where we have solved many word problems and sums with up to 3 digit numbers and loved them!
  • The RE lesson during which we have learned that God has given us the gift of free will, or the power to make our own choices. We have learned that because God loves us he made us free to choose if we want to make a good or bad choice. God also taught us about the consequences of the bad choices that we make and of how they can be hard for us. We have spoken a lot about how aware we are of those choices and have promised to try and make the good ones whenever possible. At least try…😊
  • The punctuation lesson where we have learned to always punctuate our sentences with full stops, question marks or exclamation marks, according to what they say.
  • We particularly enjoyed learning about Elmer’s story, regarding the Rights of the Child, from which we have learned that it is absolutely fine being different and although different we are all the same: lovely human beings with great qualities.🥰

We would like to congratulate Isabel, our Hot Chocolate of the week, for her continued effort to become a true role model to all her peers! Well done, Isabel, and keep up the good work!🏆🥇👏😀

We would also like to congratulate the boys and girls from the 3 tables who won the weekly prizes of tidiest tables of the week! Well done! 👏👏👏👏🏆And remember that all the tables can win! They just need to work hard for it!

That’s all for now!

Have a wonderful weekend!😀

Mrs Valente and P3A❤

P5A weekly update: 3rd February 2023

Dear families of P5A!

We hope you are all well! This week we have been working really hard and want to share our highlights!

We have been working on fractions in maths and Emili particularly loved making equivalent fraction plates for our working wall. She also liked using the tiles to find as many equivalent fractions as possible! We have discovered that 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 and 5/10 are all equivalent fractions! Julia also enjoyed playing on Sumdog this week. Fractions are a tricky concept so we will be doing lots of work on this over the next couple of weeks. There is also weekly maths homework to be completed on Sumdog which supports our learning in class. Simply log in and click on the ‘tasks’ section to find the homework.

Fahad, Vijval, Akshaj and Leo all said that they enjoyed using the laptops for writing during literacy this week. We chose our favourite narrative piece from the past few weeks and used lots of writer’s tools to uplevel our writing. We all did a super job and are very proud of our hard efforts!

Nikola’s weekly highlight was P.E. on Friday. We are lucky enough to have a champion highland dancer in our class- Emily- who not only gave us a special performance but also taught us some steps! We are so proud of our superstar and had so much fun trying a new style of dancing!

Eilidh’s highlight of the week was working on our John Muir research projects. We have been researching all about his life, his love for nature and the influence he has upon society today.

Inaayah enjoyed health and wellbeing this week. We were learning about Articles 7 & 8 which states that all children have the right to a name, to belong to a country and have their own identity. We loved making our own family crests to show each of our different identities!

Our Hot Chocolate winner this week is Leo. He tried so hard throughout writing and worked extremely well in literacy and maths all week too- fantastic work Leo!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

p7b Learning Highlights Week Beginning 30.1.23

Pupil Highlights:

Kieran: We cemented simplifying fractions in maths and began utilising our reciprocal reading skill

‘clarifying’.

Liam: We discussed why we even simplify fractions in our daily lives  – to make fractions easier to use.

Alex: We simplify fractions to make quantities of amounts easier to work with and visualise.

Rupert: This week we learnt what clarifying is – to clarify is when you do not understand a word and you use different techniques to identify the meaning of the word or phrase. Some of the strategies : find little words within the actual word itself.

Connor: three clarifying strategies are – re read the sentence, and, read the sentence before and after. Look at the illustrations for clues.

Riya: another clarifying strategy –  ask yourself, do you recognise words that are similar.

Liam: use your prior knowledge for clarifying.

Hot Chocolate Winner: Congratulations to Connor for winning hot chocolate this week. You have been absolutely smashing it in Reciprocal Reading, explaining in your own words, the different strategies for clarifying.

Table Winners: ‘We Love Poland’

P7A Weekly Update

Dear Parents,

Here’s a look at what we were doing this week in P7A:

Spelling this week came from our class novel ‘A Monster Calls’ as part of our WordBoost activity – the idea being to increase our vocabularies and transfer these more ambitious words into our writing. Quite a number of the class managed to fit some of the words into our narrative stories written on Wednesday – you can ask your child to see theirs as it is saved into their OneDrive.

In maths this week we have continued work on FDP with the focus being on finding a percentage of an amount, this will run into next week where we will also begin Decimals. We were working out how to calculate complimentary angles on Thursday and on Friday we were problem solving handling data, using the netbooks and the Real Life Problem Solving App.

We enjoyed music with Mrs Morrison and PE (Netball) with Mrs Lafferty and really liked the drama warm-up game ‘I’m Mr Hit’.

In science we have continued learning about dissolving and solutions, this week using filter paper to separate sand from water which we are going to evaporate and see if there is anything left behind. Some of us had a bit more trouble keeping the sand from getting through than others!

The PFFA group have met again and will have a bit of homework over the next few weeks, the deadline for submission of the workbooks has been brought forward to the end of February so please support your children in any ways you can. Their work is assessed looking at:

1. I have used all the Gifts of the Holy Spirit when showing my love of God and my love of others in my daily life.

2. I have reflected on how my actions have made an impact on my journey of faith.

So having evidence for each of the gifts at School, Home and Parish (if going for a Parish Commendation) by completing some of the tasks. The reflection should evidence how the gifts of the Holy Spirit have impacted their faith and be related to the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and is completed on the Concluding Evidence pages.

On Thursday, our buddies visited us to celebrate their 100 day of school. We loved hearing what they would do if they had £100 and just enjoyed getting to spend some time with them.

Here are some pupil highlights from this week:

Zahra S said, “I liked how we played different games for drama and how our French was on animals.”

“My highlight of the week was seeing seeing our buddies on Thursday for their 100th day,” said Katie.

“I enjoyed the sceince lesson using a funnel and filter paper to sperate sand from water,” said Rhys.

Nellie said, “We did drama and it was a murder mystery. It was exciting and fun.”

And this week’s winner of Hot Chocolate at Home is…

Bettina!

Great Job Bettina, enjoy your hot chocolate!

Have a Great Weekend,

P7a and Mr McGurn.

P4b Weekly blog post 3rd February 2023

In Health and Wellbeing, we explored why it can be a good thing to take risks and be proactive.  We learnt about the zones of risk, which are the comfort zone, the risk zone and the panic zone.  When we are in the comfort zone, we feel safe, happy and comfortable.  When we take risks, we might achieve something and be proud of it, we might make new friends or you might have a new experience and learn from it.

In topic and technology, we researched Edinburgh Castle and started to make a PowerPoint Presentation in pairs.  Next week, we will finish these and present them to our class.

In music, we looked at notation and with NYCOS, we sung some new songs with Mrs de Luen.

In literacy, we learnt about Scots language.  Wheesht means be quiet, bonnie means beautiful/pretty and beastie means insect/animal.  We have started reading some books about Hamish McHaggis.

In maths, we have finished our work on multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100.  We are now going to be applying our understanding through multiplying 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers.

Highlights:

Layla, Amelia and Jonah: We enjoyed music with Mrs de Luen because she taught us the new song and we played games.

Khael: I liked learning about notation with Mrs Morrison in music.

Aiden: I loved doing PE with Mrs Lafferty and the two students.  We played tail-tag and it was fun.

Ishani S: I liked learning Scots.  My favourite word was bonnie because it is Mrs Brown’s name.
