Interdisciplinary learning

We have been learning about litter and recycling. We did a survey with the whole school to find out what everyone eats during break. Lots of people have crisps so we have decided to recycle crisp packets through Terracycle. We are going to be in charge of this.

We have been learning about the journey of a plastic bag from it being dropped to it going in to the sea. It is dangerous because some animals might eat it or get stuck in it.

The ethos and life of the school

We had our Vertical groups last Friday.

As part of the First Ministers Reading Challenge, we are going to be hiding reading books in the community. We made a letter and on the back of it we drew a picture of a person reading a book.

In the 1 + 2 Gurus, we made posters to show the colours of school lunch tray with the Spanish name on it. We also made speech bubbles of different sayings in Spanish and English.

In Sport and Health, we were writing on a sheet what clubs we would like after school.

In the Tech team, we were learning about how to go on to pupil shared on the laptops. We got to write a story on Word. We then learned how to save it in to a folder.

At Mini Vinnies, we were making posters saying bring in books for a book sale.

In the Rights and Respecting School team, we were learning about the needs and wants. We were drawing pictures  to go in to the needs and wants.

P3B Learning Highlights 15/11/19

This week in P3B we have been learning about different addition and subtraction strategies. We have been sharing our strategies with the class to find the one that works best for us. It is Anti-Bullying Week, so we decided to make Anti-Bullying posters. We talked about all the things that make a good poster and used these while working with a partner to make our poster the best it could be. To celebrate World Kindness Day, on Wednesday we delivered a little gift to all the staff in the school. We also went round the class and gave each other compliments. Primary 3 were very kind and left compliments on the whiteboard for Miss Brannan as well. On Monday on Remembrance Day we made a Poppy Wreath to remember those who died in the wars. We also made flowers to remember people in our lives who have died and said a special prayer for them.

Our Learning Highlights:

“I liked doing the Anti-Bullying posters. We had to use bright colours.” – Vivien

“We did chimney sums to add and take away.” – Naman

“I played ring toss. I threw the circle on the stick and I got 30 and 20 and 50 points. I added them to get 100” – Marcus

“We delivered a present, a kit kat, to the teachers for World Kindness Day.  We said nice things about other people in the class.” – Aeryn

“We made a flower for people up in heaven.” – Amelia and Ali

P4a Learning Highlights

Curriculum areas and subjects

In Maths, we were learning how to use the column method to add and subtraction. We got to add and subtract in the thousands using this method.

We also looked at pictograms. A pictogram is a chart that uses pictures to represent information. Pictograms are set out in the same way as bar charts, but instead of bars they use columns of pictures to show the numbers involved. There is a key so you know how much each picture represents.

In Art, we were learning about hot and cold colours. Cold colours are blue, purple and green. Hot colours are red, orange and yellow. We create an autumn picture using cold colours for the background and hot colours for the falling leaves.  It was so much fun!

Interdisciplinary learning

We enjoyed learning about Bonfire Night and how to keep safe.  We made a leaflet to show how to keep safe.

We wrote a cinquain poem about autumn. It is five lines long and we had to use the right amount of syllables on each line. We also used alliteration. It was a challenge!

The ethos and life of the school

Last week we had a visitor from the SSPCA. We discussed how to look after pets. We then made a robot animal and got to code it.

Week Beginning 4.11.19

P1B highlights:

Daniel – “I liked drawing my monster.”  The children drew their own monster after listening to The Gruffalo story again.  The focus was on listening for adjectives such as purple prickles, orange eyes and knobbly knees.  They then created their own monsters using adjectives to describe them.  Next week we will use the app ChatterPix to make our monsters talk!   We are very excited about that.

Alexa – “I liked when we put our foot in the paint.  It was gooey.”  Mrs Devlin saw a great idea on Pinterest to recreate the Gruffalo and Mouse characters.  Who was going to provide the larger footprint for the Gruffalo?  Why, our P7 Buddies of course!  So each morning this week, a handful of Buddies came to our classroom and with their P1 friend, they put their foot in brown paint and printed a footprint shape on coloured paper of their choice.  The finished pieces will look so fantastic!  Watch this space!

DaisyDee – “I liked writing my Grandpa’s name.”  DaisyDee wanted to do something special for her Grandpa in Heaven and wrote his name on a pink piece of paper.  We think he would like that very much.

Freya – “I loved making the fireworks pictures with the glitter paint.”  With it being Bonfire Night this week, we used fluorescent colours and sparkly paint to create a night sky bursting with colours.  Beautiful!

Mrs Devlin: The highlight of my week was listening to the children sing the songs they have been learning for our Nativity Show.  They looked so angelic today singing them with their hands joined that I started to tear up!

P3B Learning Highlights 1/11/19

This week in P3B, to get ready for Halloween we used some Halloween related words to write acrostic poems. We made sure to use adjectives to make our poems more interesting. We also took part in some problem solving during maths to help solve who stole the Halloween cake. In pairs we took a clue each then worked as a whole class to put the clues together to solve the mystery. We were brilliant detectives! We learned a bit about The Day of the Dead and how it is celebrated at the same time as Halloween. We made some colourful skull masks. We also learned how to say some Halloween words in Spanish and in Sign Language! We drew some animals that we know live in the Rainforest using oil pastels on black card so that the bright colours would stand out. On Friday we took part in some Halloween activities with our friends in P3A and had great fun!

Our Learning Highlights:

“I liked doing the masks. They are skulls. They are for The Day of the Dead. It’s a thing that Mexican people celebrate.” – Akash

“I managed to get an apple very easy when we were apple dunking” – Ali

“I liked drawing the rainforest animals. We used oil pastels” – Niamh

“We were doing Halloween poems. We could either pick the word pumpkin, cauldron or Halloween to write an acrostic poem” – Aeryn

“I liked finding the cake thief by solving maths problems. We worked with a partner to solve a clue. We gathered together and mixed the clues up.” – Naman

P1B Post

Week Beginning 28.10.19

P1B highlights:

Paige – “My favourite part was having the rabbits.”  The SSPCA delivered some mechanical rabbits to P1B and we learned how to take care of them so they are happy and healthy.

Layla – “I liked finding Numicon on the branches.”  The children have been learning about Even and Odd numbers.  We met a little owl called Even and he only ate 2, 4, 6, 8 and O ending numbers.  The song is to the tune ‘Old MacDonald Had a Farm’.  Ask your child to sing it to you.  We went on a number hunt around the school and wrote the numbers down in the correct column.

Ishani S – “I liked seeing the classroom full of leaves!”  We started our new topic, ‘The Graffalo’ this week.  The children found the room with a carpet of leaves one morning and different footprints.  They had lots of ideas about who the footprints belonged to!  Some thoughts ranged from wolves to bears!  At last we discovered the book and linked the footprints to the characters.

Jude – “I like making Halloween cookies.” On Thursday the children rotated around the P1 and P2 classrooms and engaged in lots of fun Halloween themed learning.

Mrs Devlin: The highlight of my week was today when we put the letters we have been learning together.  We put c and a together to make ca, s and a together to make sa, m and a together to make ma and finally p and a together to make pa.  I revealed to the children that on Monday we will meet the new sound ‘t’.  We placed it at the end of our letters and some people read sat, mat and cat!  It was truly magical!  Keep an eye out in your child’s diary for suggested words you can make with your sound flashcards by gluing them together.

We will have a new pupil join our class next week called Emily.  She visited our class today and listened to a story.  We are so excited to have a new friend join P1B.

Please keep the ‘Common Words’ flashcards bag in your child’s homework pack so these can be updated on Fridays.  Keep the ‘Sounds’ flashcards bag at home as you have been issued with the sounds we will be focusing on up until Christmas already.  Thank you.  This message is only relevant for P1B.
