P1 Weekly Learning Highlights 29th November 2024

We have had a super busy week.  We have started rehearsing for the Nativity on the stage.  We know where we sit and we have been practising our lines and singing all the songs.  Our teachers are very proud of us.

In literacy we have been learning the sounds ‘e’ and ‘f’ we are practising writing these letters and sounding them out to make words.  We are continuing to work on our blending skills.  We made elephants to help teach our families about ‘e’ and we looked for the sounds in our library books.  We played Kim’s Game with ‘f’ objects.  We read a story and completed some prediction discussions.

In writing this week we wrote a sentence using some cvc words that included the ‘e’ sound.  We are remembering to try and use finger spaces and a full stop.

On Wednesday we had our Bookbug bag event.  We made a paper plate octopus, designed pyjamas and read our bookbug books with a family member or school helper.

In Maths we worked on making amounts to 10p and we played bowling to make the facts for 10. It was lots of fun.

On Thursday it was a cold and frosty day so we had discussions about Jack Frost.

This week was Road Safety Week.  We recalled the green cross code and discussed how to cross the road safely.  We went outside to the crossing and learned to cross the road properly, thinking about Stop, Look, Listen and think.

We started our new topic ‘Toys’ we read the story ‘The Old Toy Room’ and discussed the different toys in the story and discussed old and new toys.

Today we got to wear something Scottish or Tartan to school to help celebrate St Andrew’s Day which is on Saturday.  We learned all about St Andrew and made a Scottish Flag and designed a tartan for a teddy.  We also got a special treat from Mrs McKissack.  Thank you the Irn Bru and shortbread biscuit was delicious.

Congratulations to Daniel our Hot Chocolate winner this week and well done to Felix our Reading Champion.

Weekly Highlights:

Alfie ‘I liked playing with the Dinosaur eggs’.

Daniel ‘I liked learning about St Andrew’.

Lena ‘I liked Gym, we played Tig’.

Tiara ‘I liked learning about St Andrew’.

Ava ‘I liked learning about money’.

Cerys ‘I liked learning about the Scottish Flag’.

Emilio ‘I liked learning about road safety and how to cross the road’.

P6B – WB 25.11.24

Dear Readers,

We hope you are all well and cosy.❄🥰

This week’s highlights were:

  • Continuing our work on the spelling of really interesting words from our new and amazing book, The Elsewhere Emporium.
  • Working a lot on Maths word problems and on developing the skills to identify which operations to use in order to solve them as well as to understand exactly what they are asking us for. We will still need to continue working on this because most of us can still get very confused at times.😊
  • Revising 3 to 6 digits addition and subtraction sums and multiplication by 10, 100 and 1000.
  • Art work related to Book week’s The Lorax – Finishing our design of an alternative cover for the book, creating our frames for our own Truffula Trees. Drawing and painting the enormous Truffula Trees for the Area display which looks absolutely fantastic!🌳🌳🌳🌳
  • For topic, we have learned many things about tsunamis, why they are formed, the size of the waves they can make, the consequences of the most terrible tsunamis in the world and the warning signs that show a tsunami is about to come. We have had a very special focus on the Tsunami of 2004 and have watched the incredible story of the ‘Angel of the beach’, about a British girl who, at the age of 10, had identified that a tsunami was going to happen and warned her parents who then warned everyone at the beach to run to security. All that happened because she had been paying attention to a Science lesson about tsunamis in school where her teacher had also taught her all the warning signs that people should be aware of. She saved many lives that day and we were all very emotional when we watched her talking about it. ♥
  • Learning about St. Andrew, who he was, why he became the patron saint of Scotland and why the saltire cross is at the centre of the Scottish flag. We also spoke about how people celebrate this day and about the old Scottish clans and their different tartans.
  • We have revised, once again, the main different types of words we know: nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs and connectives and agreed that we will need to continue working on it, since many of us can still find it hard to recognise them in sentences.
  • We have learned about a new type of text, the Discussion and its different parts and have identified those by ourselves. Next week will be time for us to start writing our own discussions.😃
  • Finally, it was Sumdog West Lothian challenge week and we are very proud to announce that we ended up in 9th place overall!👏👏👏Out of 233 classes!
  • We are also very proud about the fact that we won a daily prize for the 27th of November!!!!You can see the certificate attached🏆🥇SUMDOG CERTIFICATE
  • And of course we felt super happy as well because our Jude ended the challenge in 26th position, out of more than 2000 pupils participating! Super well done, Jude!!!!😃👏👏👏👏🏆✨🎉
  • Because of all his hard work and his usual amazing participation in class Jude was also the Hot Chocolate of the Week!!!!!😁🥇🏆👏🎉✨

We hope you have enjoyed reading about our week and say goodbye for now wishing you all a great weekend!

Primary 2 Weekly Update – 29.11.24

We have had another great week in Primary 2!

It was Road Safety week this week.  The children learned about how to keep safe when crossing a road and made brilliant posters to show our Primary 1 pupils. They were super impressed!

It was a beautiful, crisp, cold day when we went out for outdoor learning on Thursday.  The children had a lot of fun playing with the ice and we had a lot of discussion around how ice is formed.  We then took some ice into the classroom and predicted how long we thought it would take for the ice to melt.  Some people said 20 minutes and others thought up to 2 weeks.  In the end, it took around 3 and a half hours.  Well done to Daniel, Umaez and Garvit, who predicted the closest with 3 hours.

Tomorrow is St. Andrew’s Day, so we had a little early celebration.  We learned about the life of St Andrew and the children made their own Scotland flags.  As a special treat, the children even got to taste a little Irn Bru and shortbread.  Most of them liked it, but a few weren’t so sure.

Huge congratulations to our hot chocolate winner Laaibah!  Laaibah always works very hard in class and is kind and helpful towards others.  Keep up the great work Laaibah!

Our new reading champion is Joseph.  Joseph is a great example towards others during ERIC time and has been doing fantastic with his reading!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Primary 2/1 Learning Highlights 29th November 2024

This week the Primary 1s have been very busy rehearsing for the Nativity. We have been on the stage and our singing is fantastic! We have remembered when to say our lines and when we have to move around the stage. We can’t wait to perform for everyone in a few weeks.

In RE, we learned all about St Andrew and on Friday we made some flags to celebrate St Andrew’s Day. Mrs McKissack sent us a special treat to enjoy!

In Literacy, we have been learning two sounds this week and these were ‘e’ and ‘f’. We enjoyed writing the letters and some people even wrote their own books. We also made ‘f’ using the blocks and other loose parts. For writing, we were focussing on using the word ‘and’ and we wrote some super sentences.

In Maths, we have been learning about the counting on strategy to help us with addition. We had to help Miss Stebbing as she got a bit confused. We also did a bit more work on making different amounts of money with the coins.

We started our new topic all about Toys. We sorted toys into old and new toys after reading The Old Toy Room.

On Thursday, some of us found ice in the playground. We brought it into the classroom to watch it melt.

For Road Safety Week, we read the story of Super Cat who helped us think about crossing the road safely. We then went up to the zebra crossing to practise.

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Zac – I enjoyed playing families.

Elsie – I enjoyed writing.

Harrison – I enjoyed playing with the blocks.

Danvith – I enjoyed making a pretend car.

Hallie – I enjoyed doing the bookbug activities with my mum.

Vivaan – I enjoyed doing Spanish.

Congratulations to Amariah who is our Hot Chocolate winner for always being helpful and working hard. Well done to Vivaan who is our Reading Champion, he has been reading confidently with expression.

P6B – Book Week Scotland WB 18.11.24

Dear Readers,

We hope you are all very well.

What a fantastic week it has been! Book week is always lots of fun and this one was simply brilliant!😃

The whole school worked on the book The Lorax by Dr. Seuss and learned, according to their age and level, great things about the book and its author.

Our highlights were:

  • Spelling words from The Lorax.
  • Art activities about The Lorax : draw along the Lorax and Frame your own Truffula trees.
  • Dramatisation of the story of The Lorax.
  • Baking Truffulas.
  •  One, two and three steps word problems.
  • Daily collaborative stories, where every class had to write a chapter for a different book every day as a whole class. We can’t wait to read those books!😂📚
  • Reading to our new Reading Buddies from P2 who visited our classroom and were delighted to have us reading for and with them.
  • Watching the brilliant Axel Scheffler, the Gruffalo’s creator, explaining how he works  with Julia Donaldson in the illustration of her books and helping us to understand the whole process of publishing a book.🐗 He also explained why he prefers to draw fictional  creatures and said that he has been an illustrator since he was in his twenties. The children considered this Author’s live edition extremely interesting and said that they had learned a lot with it!
  • Creating our own alternative covers for The Lorax, having in mind what we have learned the book is about : Deforestation, the environment and protection of Nature.🏔🌳
  • Learning again about St. Margaret, the Patroness Saint of Scotland, her life and how she became so much loved by people here.
  • We also had parents and carers visiting for Share the Learning and it’s always enjoyable to show them a sample of our work.😀
  • To add to the fun and make it different, each afternoon the children got to go to one of the other Upper Area’s classroom to have a lesson with Mrs Lea, Miss McGregor and Mr McGurn about The Lorax as well.

Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to choose the Hot Chocolate of this week but will let you know next week about both!🥰

That’s all for now! We wish you all a great weekend and hope you’ll all be safe in this cold and maybe snowy weather!🌨❄

Primary 2/1 Learning Highlights 22nd November 2024

Happy Book Week Scotland!

On Monday, there were boxes wrapped up in our classroom. When we ripped them open we found our Bookbug and Read Write Count Bags. We had lots of fun exploring the contents and then we went to read in the staffroom! We have read in lots of interesting places this week including Mrs McKissack’s Office and in the Woodland.

We have taken part in lots of different activities using the contents of our bags.  Here are some of the activities we completed for each book.

The Eyebrows of Doom.

We made our own eyebrows of doom on put them on our photos to look like the front cover. We calculated the cost of different ice creams and toppings using our adding skills. We made our own Dave the Bear characters and acted out scenes from the story.

10 Dogs

We made the bonds of 10 using sausages and frying pans, not real ones though! We also learned about tally marks.

The Bongles and The Crafty Crows

We talked about passwords and passcodes and how these need to be kept secret.

The Quickest Bedtime Story Ever

We talked about how important sleep is and sorted things that were good and not good for sleep.

My First Book of Dinosaurs

We measured out the lengths of different dinosaurs and saw how many children long they were.

How to Make a Story

We used cards to make up our own stories. We were very excited to see which cards we got and were confident in making the stories.

We also took part in 2 competitions run by the Reader Leaders and the Librarians. We also had the opportunity to meet with our Reading Buddies from P6 and we can’t wait to read again with them. Another activity that was very exciting was an Authors Live event with Axel Scheffler. We got to draw along with him to make a picture of the Gruffalo and Jonty the Gentoo. Our pictures were fantastic!

It has been a fantastic week of learning!

Some of our personal highlights are:

Harrison – I enjoyed reading in the staffroom.

Hallie – I enjoyed making up the stories.

Elsie – I enjoyed making my own eyebrows of doom.

Vihaan – I enjoyed saying the stories.

Miles – I enjoyed reading The Eyebrows of Doom.

W/E 22/11/2024

This week P4A have really enjoyed their Book Week celebrations. They have had the opportunity to try lots of new books and explore many genres and stories.

P4A have spent time in all 4 classes in the middle area this week, working on different tasks that each teacher in P4A,B and P5A and b have created for them. They have shown great manners and been every respectful when they have been working with those in other classes. They have set a great example and I am very proud.

Our reading champion this week Jiade has been showing amazing reading skills this week as always. Keep up the great work!

We had some book tasting on Wednesday morning where we got the opportunity to try reading some new books that we perhaps wouldn’t opt for normally. P4A discovered lots of new words within these books and jotted them down.

The Lorax has been our focus and everyone has really worked hard in implementing the Lorax into lots of different curricular areas. P4A have been very creative and made some beautiful art work which is displayed outside our classroom for everyone to see.

P4A also have composed a few stories along with the rest of the school as part of book week. They have written chapters and added them into the collaborative stories. We cannot wait to hear them when they are finished!

The hot chocolate winner this week goes to Riley

Well done for working so hard and setting a great example this week.

Have a fantastic weekend P4A!

Thank you for another fun week!

Miss Maxwell 🙂
