P3B Learning Highlights 6/3/20

This week in P3B in PE we are doing rolls and hand stands for gymnastics. We were doing backwards rolls on a wedge and we were also doing rolls on mats.

When we were doing maths we were doing more fractions. We were learning about equivalent fractions. That means when fractions are equal.

In science we were learning about our senses. Our senses are smell, touch, taste, sight and hearing. We watched a clip about our senses.

We learned about ancient Egyptian pyramids and made our own pyramids with a fact in them.

For writing we were writing a sentence each and passing it on to the next person who hadn’t seen any of the previous sentences. We ended up with some very silly and funny stories. We also started to learn about commas in a list and played a game about making a shopping list for the supermarket.

On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day. We did a scavenger hunt with P3A. We had to find and solve clues to unlock the cupboard with the Book Day Tokens in them. We also showed our wooden spoon characters to P3A and got to see the ones they had made.

On Friday we went to Mass in the school then we did the Newsround quiz of the week and got 3 out of 5.

Our Learning Highlights:

“I enjoyed Friday because when we went to Mass I got to pray for someone I really miss.” – Niamh

“I enjoyed doing the scavenger hunt on World Book Day because we unlocked a code.” – Urwa

“I liked that we were writing a sentence and weren’t seeing the sentences before.” – Declan

“I liked science because the senses are very interesting and I like interesting things.” – Aditya

“I liked PE because I got to practice my bridge kickovers.” – Gracie

“I liked book day when we got our reading passports because you can get certificates when you finish 5, 10, 15 or books or when you finish the full passport.” – Naman

World Book Day 2020

We celebrated World Book Day today in school.  We took part in lots of different activities in our classrooms.  We had lots of “Drop Everything and Read” times where Mrs Egan rang the bell and everyone had to stop what they were doing and read until the bell rang again!  Mrs McLaughlin and Mrs McKissack visited classes to see the fantastic wooden spoon characters that the children had worked on at home.  A huge thank you to all children and families who took the time to complete this activity.

Mr McGurn and the Mini Vinnies held their recycled book sale and managed to raise a fabulous £150 for our Lenten Appeal.  This year we will be donating to SCIAF.

Many thanks to all parents and carers for your ongoing support of school activities and initiatives.

P3B Learning Highlights Week Beginning 24/2

This week in P3B we have been learning about fractions. We know the difference between the numerator and denominator in a fraction. We know that a shape has to be split into equal parts to be a fraction. We also did some problem solving to solve the mystery of the pancake pincher.

In PE we were doing gymnastics and we had to do different jumps and balances and rolls on the mats.

For writing we had to write about our monster that we designed. We had to describe our monster using similes. We also read a passage about The Marrog. It described an alien and in our groups we had to draw it.

We have been learning about the Ancient Egyptians and what it would be like to live in Ancient Egypt.

We learned about the Lost Sheep and made some sheep with cotton wool. We also learned about Pancake Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent. We even got to have some pancakes!

On Friday we saw a “Science is Magic” show where they fixed a balloon, turned water into special liquid that was pink and the picked a penny out of the air from behind your ear.

Our Learning Highlights:

“I liked that we had pancakes on Pancake Tuesday. I had chocolate spread on mine.” – Declan

“I liked the science show and the guy that did the magic.” – Niamh

“I liked PE because I learned how to do a forward roll off a bench.” – Amelia

“I liked learning about pizza fractions and we learned how to write the fractions.” – Reece

“I liked when we did free writing on Friday because I finished my book.” – Jayden

“I liked when we were doing the writing about the monster because we had to use similes to describe what the monster looked like.”- Aeryn

P6A Learning Highlights wb 24.2.2020

What a busy week we have had in P6a this week!

Curriculum Areas and Subjects:  In Numeracy and Maths we have investigated the formula for calculating the area of shapes and we have developed our understanding of adding decimals.  We were “Decimal Detectives”, making sure that our elbow partners had put the decimal points into the right places.  In Literacy, we took part in an activity where we had to punctuate the alphabet to show the difference that punctuation makes when you read aloud (see photos at the bottom!)

Interdisciplinary Learning:  we continued to learn a bit more about the human body and also about the SHANARRI indicators for wellbeing (Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included).

Ethos and Life of the School:  On Monday we begin looking at the cost of the school day for families and identifying things that cost money.  We are going to plan a project to help with this and began our work this week.

Opportunities for Personal Achievement:  Well done to Keedie who brought medals to show the class.  Temi attended Milkshake Monday for showing ready, respectful and safe.  We managed to fill up our Class Recognition Board this week as Mrs Egan caught everyone being ready, respectful and safe at different points during the week.  Well done!

This Week in P3A (w/b 24th February 2020)

Today we watched the Scientists doing a show.  They turned water different colours using chemicals and they did some magic with the balloon string when they tore pieces off and then put it back together!  Yesterday we completed a maths challenge to find out who was the Pancake Pincher.  It was Seb.  We had to use times tables and division and counting in 5s, 10s, 2s and 3s (forwards and backwards) to solve clues.  We made pyramids for our new topic and we wrote facts about the pyramids on the side.  Did you know that the tallest pyramid was 140m high?  It is the Pyramid of Giza.  We have been learning the 7 days of the week in Spanish.  We updated our EPortfolios this week.  Please look at them and leave a comment.  We can show you how to log in.

Here are our personal learning highlights:

Edin – I had fun describing our monsters with the similes.

Joshua – I liked when the Scientists did the balloon trick.

Daisy – I liked when the Scientist mixed the vinegar and baking soda together and made the explosion.

Josh – I liked when we had to solve who was the Pancake Pincher.  It was a bit tricky!

Grant – I liked when the Scientist poured in the baking soda and the vinegar.

Ronan – I liked when the Scientists poured the water in the cup and it went white then black.

Natalia – I liked when the Scientists poured the water into the beaker and it turned pink.

Aoife – I liked when the Scientists did the balloon trick.

Inaya – I liked when the Scientist threw the ball behind him and one in the air and it went away.

P3A Week Beginning 17th February

This week we have been learning about Fairtrade.  We are making a display for the area and we will put up a photograph when it is finished.  We did some chocolate tasting for maths and the 2 most popular bars were both Fairtrade.  We made graphs to show the results of our favourite chocolate.  We need to remember to look out for the Fairtrade logo when we are out shopping.  In maths we have been learning about subtraction with borrowing.  It has been challenging so our brains have definitely been stretched!  In literacy we learned about similes.  We need to listen or look for the words ‘as’ or ‘like’.  We made our own monsters and next week we will be describing them using similes.

Our learning highlights for this week are:

Emily – I loved when we were tasting the chocolate.

Joshua – I liked when we drew our own monsters.

Daisy – I learned about similes and it was fun.

Natalia – I liked making my own monster.

Josh – I like doing the subtraction.

Madiha – I liked when we were doing the monsters.

Edin – I liked when we were writing the similes so we can write about our monsters.

Myles – I liked when we were doing the monsters.

Ronan – I liked when we drew the monsters because it was fun.

Aoife – I liked learning what similes are and writing the similes.

Samyuktha – I liked to taste the chocolate because it was super fun.

Sam – I liked drawing the monsters.

P1B Post

Week Beginning 17.2.20

P1B highlights:

DaisyDee – “When my name went on the ‘Over and Above’ board.”  As part of celebrating the children’s ready, respectful and safe behaviour, we now have in our classroom an ‘Over and Above’ board where the children will write their names if any adults in the school notice behaviour that is over and above.  The board will get cleared each day ready for a new start.

Markuss – “ERIC time.”  Now that the children are making headway with blending letters together to read words, we have introduced a 10 minute ERIC (Everyone Reading Together in Class) time each day straight after lunch.  The children are free to lie down with a book, teddy and pillow anywhere in the room and enjoy a book from our class library.  We have a lovely, cosy fire flickering on the smartboard too.  Also, if everyone manages to read quietly and not disturb anyone reading then we all get a house point!

Maeve – “Painting a Fairtrade logo.”  These next 2 weeks we are celebrating ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’.  The children made a paper plate logo with the choice of paint, collage, felt tip pens or crayons.  Look out for the optional Fairtrade homework that will be sent home in your child’s homework bag.

Layla – “Playing with the new Fun Friday toys.”  On Fridays as you know, the children in P1B have a 20 minute slot to enjoy some extra fun and are welcome to bring a toy from home.  The children were very excited to see the new toys they are also welcome to play with.  The 2 weekly classroom helpers have the important role of putting the toys out and putting them away behind the curtain but everyone helps during tidy up time to put them back in the boxes.

Mrs Devlin’s highlight – The highlight of my week was when we went to the woods for our outdoor learning. Watching the children stand with their mouths open catching the snow and feeling the sensation of it on their skin was lovely to see.  During this time when the sky was overcast and grey, suddenly the sun came out and sunlight flooded the woodland making it look like a magical Winter Wonderland.  Please remember to send your child dressed for the outdoors on outdoor learning days (see diary) including hat, scarf and gloves for this colder, wetter season.  Thank you.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Monday 24th February sees the start of Fairtrade Fortnight.  We will be linking this to our work in Rights Respecting Schools and the article of the fortnight which is:

Article 24 Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must work to provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

Classes will be working on activities to learn more about Fairtrade over the next 2 weeks so ask your children to share their learning with you!

Primary 6B Learning Highlights .

This week we have been concentrating on learning more about “Shanarri .”  This Topic has created some great class discussions and the children participated in a carousel activity where they identified what it would look like to be Safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, responsible , respected and included in their school and in the community. We also created personality swirls in Art, using descriptive language to describe  each individual’s unique qualities.
